  • Patent number: 4991462
Abstract: An ultracentrifuge rotor is characterized by a hub having radially outwardly extending curved spokes. The outer ends of the spokes are received in a groove defined on the inner peripheral surface of an annular rim. Sample carriers are affixed to the rim at circumferentially spaced locations defined between adjacent pairs of spokes. As the rotor rotates the disparity in physical properties between the hub and the rim as well as the flattening of the curvature of the spokes causes the hub to grow to an extent at least equal to that of the growth of the rim.

  • Patent number: 4992539
Abstract: A cold-water-swellable granular starch which affords aqueous solutions or dispersions having high-viscosity and/or excellent clarity is provided. In one embodiment, the granular starch is made cold-water swellable by contact with aqueous alcohol, then derivatized with an .alpha.-halocarboxylic acid, and then isolated under condition which inhibit esterification of the granular starch, e.g. high pH, to afford a starch that has excellent paste clarity. In other embodiments, the cold-water-swellable granular starch is crosslinked to afford a starch that has very high paste viscosity.

  • Patent number: 4990285
Abstract: Carbon fibers having balanced properties comprising an ultra-high modulus greater than 100 Mpsi and a high tensile strength of greater than 500 kpsi. The carbon fibers are derived from a solvent fractionated pitch having a mesophase content of greater than 90% by weight and a quinoline insolubles content of less than 1% by weight. A crude pitch feed is sequentially heat soaked, solvent fractionated, and extruded to form as-spun fibers. The latter are stabilized or infusibilized and then carbonized by multistage heat treatments involving separate precarbonization, carbonization, and graphitization steps with an intermediate cooling step.

  • Patent number: 4991164
Abstract: A system for stabilization of the coupling value between the transmitted radio signals resulting from cross polar discrimination, using the transmit power level control in radio link systems formed of several radio channels using multilevel QAM modulation. A first control signal is derived for each RF channel and a second control signal is derived for the adjacent channels. The first and second control signal are then combined to derive threshold signals. The threshold signals are multiplexed with station identification signals and this multiplexed signal is multiplexed with other service signals. The twice multiplexed signal is then inserted in the frame of a main information signal. The signal is demultiplexed to derive a remote transmit power control signal. The atmospheric precipitation condition is evaluated through statistical control of the bit error rate. A local transmit power control signal is derived.

  • Patent number: 4990335
Abstract: Method of making tablets for active ingredient delivery by compressing a mixture of active ingredient and granular, high viscosity, fully hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol or copolymer of vinyl alcohol with methyl acrylate or methyl methacrylate. By use of a crystalline, heat treated polymer, a tablet providing quick active ingredient release is obtained. By using an amorphous, non-heat treated polymer a tablet providing prolonged active ingredient release is obtained. By using blends of crystalline and amorphous polymers, tablets having a range of active ingredient release characteristics can be obtained. The granular, high viscosity, fully hydrolyzed polymers provide flowability, compressibility and processing versatility advantages over conventional tablet binders.
