  • Patent number: 4939037
Abstract: A composite fiber and resin sign post for displaying highway signs which provides great reduction in vehicle damage in the event a vehicle moving at high speed collides with the sign post. This potential is achieved by the controlling the mode and location of the structural failure of the post upon impact. The failure mode of the post is controlled by varying the configuration of the post in cross-section, in combination with varying the specific fibers and resins, and in further combination with varying the location and placement of the fibers. The composite post may be constructed by pultrusion, filament winding, or related processes. A preferred embodiment uses a ground anchor socket constructed either by processes and components similar to those used in manufacturing the post, or by stamping sheet steel and spot welding to form a socket. The anchor socket provides additional control over the post failure and makes replacement of damaged posts quicker and easier.

  • Patent number: 4938749
Abstract: The housing is mounted on and sealed around an opening in the pouch wall. The disc-like base of the housing has a central, axially extending entrance passageway aligned with the pouch opening. A portion of the base extends radially outwardly beyond the seal and has a second axial passageway therethrough. The cover of the housing defines a filter receiving recess aligned with the entrance passageway. The recess has a connecting channel extending radially therefrom. The cover is removably mounted on the base for relative rotational movement between a first position in which the connecting channel aligns with the exit passageway, so as to permit venting of the gases from the pouch, and a second position wherein the connecting channel is out of alignment with the exit passageway, closing the vent.

  • Patent number: 4938481
Abstract: The illustrated action toy apparatus comprises an incrementally advancing catcher unit that may be in the form of an animated character such as a shark. The unit moves along a succession of areas of a path. Objects which may represent fish or the like are disposed on the areas. A fish on one area is caught or "eaten" by the shark when the shark reaches that area. As the shark advances to an area, its forward end rises to an elevated position to permit that end to pass over and then come back down upon a fish on that area. The forward and up and down movement of the illustrated shark unit is provided by a motor-driven cam. To maximize continuous playtime, the shark unit is tethered to the center of a gameboard so that it travels around a circular path on the board.

  • Patent number: 4937763
Abstract: A process for monitoring a system by comparing learned observations acquired when the system is running in an acceptable state with current observations acquired at periodic intervals thereafter to determine if the process is currently running in an acceptable state. The process enables an operator to determine whether or not a system parameter measurement indicated as outside preset prediction limits is in fact an invalid signal resulting from faulty instrumentation. The process also enables an operator to identify signals which are trending toward malfunction prior to an adverse impact on the overall process.

  • Patent number: 4936197
Abstract: In a preferred embodiment of hydraulic actuator wherein a piston rod is longitudinally positionable via a tail end of a cylinder, tail-end static and dynamic seal members are of plastic, of relatively elongate trapezoidal section, and a single metal spring axially preloads the two seal members in compression, via the series-related respective ends of the seal members. Engagement with the ends of each seal member are frusto-conical, to substantially match the sloped ends of the trapezoidal section, and the slope directions of these seal-member engagements are (in the case of the dynamic seal) such as to locally impart radially inwardly directed force, to drive outer ends of the seal into circumferentially uniform engagement with the piston rod of the actuator; in the case of the static seal the slope directions of seal-member engagements are such as to impart radially outwardly directed force, to drive outer ends of the static seal into similar engagement with the bore of the cylinder.
