  • Patent number: 4714745
Abstract: A hydroxy functional epoxy-polyester graft copolymer and solvent-based thermosetting coating composition comprising said copolymer and polyfunctional, hydroxy-reactive crosslinking agent. The coating composition may be formulated as hot sprayable, high solids coating composition suitable for use as chip resistant automotive vehicle primer suitable for use on body panel areas subject to chipping by stones, gravel and other road debris. The composition also may be formulated as a high solids composition sprayable with conventional spraying equipment. The hydroxy functional epoxy-polyester graft copolymer is the product of polymerization of lactone monomers in presence of hydroxy functional epoxy ester resin precursor. The precursor resin is the product of modified diepoxide and hydroxy functional secondary amine, the modified diepoxide being the product of the polymerization of lactone monomers in the presence of diepoxide which has been chain extended with dicarboxylic acid.

  • Patent number: 4714210
Abstract: A dispensing apparatus for dispensing two strip materials, each carried on a separate spool, includes a hub having a slot therein which exposes a portion of one but not the other of the spools. A friction producing member is extensible through the slot and into friction generating engagement with the selected one of the spools to exert a drag force on one of the spools to the exclusion of the other. The friction producing member is received in a groove formed in a spindle so that torque imposed on the member by rotation of the spool is transmitted to the spindle.

  • Patent number: 4714503
Abstract: In emulsion blend explosives, the replacement of coarse salt particles, e.g., prills, by fines, i.e., particles which pass a No. 50 U.S. sieve, increases the water resistance of the explosive without deleteriously affecting its shelf life provided that the explosive, prior to such replacement, is storage-stable as determined by the Salt Extraction and lead compression tests described herein. Products containing a combination of whole and crushed ammonium nitrate prills, and emulsions made with an anionic emulsifying agent such as a fatty acid salt, are preferred. Depending on the fines content and chemical composition, other properties such as sensitivity to initiation and detonation velocity also may be improved.

  • Patent number: 4713808
Abstract: A wide area paging system is disclosed in which paging messages input to the system in one local area can be broadcast to a receiver in any other local area without necessarily broadcasting the message in all areas. A local area clearinghouse in each area stores resident subscriber data including current location and receiver serial number. This data is used to transfer messages over a data network to the correct clearinghouse. The system uses a TDM data protocol. The data is encoded and transmitted at a very high rate (e.g., 19,000 baud) in short packets (256 bits/13 milliseconds) via stereo FM sidebands. Receivers are assigned to receive sequentially numbered time slots matching a portion of their address. The addresses of intended receivers are included in the data packets. Battery-powered receivers are deactivated between packets and reactivated in accordance with the sequential time slot number scheme to receive an incoming packet.

  • Patent number: 4713020
Abstract: A connector unit is provided which includes a housing having connection terminals in its opening, and a movable member adapted to be inserted into the opening of the housing. The movable member has cam projections each extending from one end, where the movable member is inserted into the housing, toward the other end, over a proper length. When the movable member is partially inserted into the opening of the housing, an elastic contact portion of the connection terminal is pressed by the cam projection to provide such a clearance as to allow the conductor to be inserted there.

  • Patent number: 4713436
Abstract: Glycoside-containing polyester products having improved color characteristics are provided by a polyester preparation process in which a polyol reactant containing at least a minor proportion of a glycoside reactant is reacted with a lower alkyl ester of a polybasic acid. The color characteristics of such products are notably improved relative to that which is obtained when said reaction is instead conducted using the corresponding polybasic acid or anhydride in place of the indicated lower alkyl ester thereof. The color improvement benefits of the present invention are particularly pronounced and dramatic when the polybasic acid component of the desired polyester product comprises an aromatic polybasic acid and when a lower alkyl ester of said aromatic polybasic acid is employed in the reaction in place of the aromatic acid itself.
