  • Patent number: 4343954
Abstract: A process for converting methanol to formaldehyde wherein methanol along with a stream containing air, water, methanol and formaldehyde is fed to a primary reactor 5 containing a silver catalyst maintained at from 630.degree. to 650.degree. C. The effluent from the primary reactor 5 is cooled and fed along with a stream containing air, water, methanol and formaldehyde to a secondary reactor 9 containing a metal oxide catalyst, such as iron oxide-molybdenum oxide. The secondary reactor 9 is maintained at from 325.degree. to 400.degree. C. The product from the secondary reactor is fed to an absorber 11 which is cross connected top and bottom with a stripper 13. Water is fed to the absorber to absorb formaldehyde and the product solution of formaldehyde and water is removed from the absorber. Air is fed to the stripper and the effluent from the stripper which contains air, water, methanol and formaldehyde is fed to both the primary reactor 5 and the secondary reactor 9.

  • Patent number: 4343698
Abstract: A water intake for example for taking cooling water for industrial installations from a river, a lake or the sea, has a sieve with a filter element and a recovery channel associated with the filter element for collecting and saving elements of the biomass which become stuck to the filter element. Electrodes are associated with the recovery channel 25 and are designed to induce an electrical field, at right angles to the recovery channel in the water to be tapped, so as to compel fish either to swim by themselves in the direction of this recovery channel or to allow themselves to be carried towards the recovery channel by a reverse water current induced at right angles thereto.

  • Patent number: 4343146
Abstract: A novel synthetic heather yarn is comprised of a first yarn in the form a relatively loose matrix of crimped filaments which are randomly intermingled with portions of a bulked differentially-colored or colorable second yarn which contains frequent periodic color-point nodes of high filament entanglement and which nodes are free from filament intermingling with said first yarn. The combined yarn is made using fluid-jets first to make the nodes in the color-print yarn or yarns and then to combine the color-point with the matrix yarn in a subsequent filament intermingling zone.

  • Patent number: 4343893
Abstract: Novel nitrobenzyl compounds are incorporated into a photographic emulsion or developer for controlled release of development/image modifier compounds. This occurs imagewise only after developer oxidation products have been formed in the course of the development process. For example, nitrobenzyl-masked phenylmercaptotetrazole (PMT), incorporated into a silver halide emulsion, reacts with developer oxidation products via an electron transfer mechanism to release the potent development restrainer PMT.

  • Patent number: 4342971
Abstract: A surface acoustic wave variable time delay includes a surface acoustic wave device (10) which is secured within a housing (30). The device (10) is provided with an input transducer (12) and an output transducer (16) which are respectfully connected to input lines (14) and output lines (18). An electrostrictive element (20) is secured within housing (30) between an end of device (10) and an interior wall (34) of housing (30). A control signal is applied to electrodes (22, 24) connected to element (20) to vary the size thereof. Element (20) applies a mechanical force to the surface acoustic wave device (10) to alter the distance between the input transducer (12) and output transducer (16) to thereby control the delay time between the signal supplied to the input lines (14) and the output signal at the output lines (18).

  • Patent number: 4341601
Abstract: An energy-efficient water evaporation process uses a falling film evaporator having a plurality of substantially vertical and equidistant heat exchange elements made of a synthetic polymeric material. Each evaporating surface is in contact with a liquid spreading means, and each heat exchange element is heated by steam having a condensation temperature slightly higher than the boiling point of the aqueous solution from which water is being evaporated. Steam formed by evaporation of water either is recompressed and reintroduced as heating steam in a single-stage process or is used as heating steam for another stage, operating at a lower temperature and pressure, in a multistage process. Heating steam condenses to fresh water, which is recovered. This process is operated at a low feed rate, preferably below 45 Kg of incoming aqueous solution per linear meter of horizontal width of each evaporating surface, and is capable of providing a 50% fresh water recovery per pass from sea water.
