Abstract: A coherent, bulked, continuous-filament, heather-dyeable yarn having a more natural, spun, wool-like appearance in carpets consists of lighter dyeing filaments which comprise 20-50% of the total yarn filaments and which are 15-45% longer than the darker dyeing filaments in the yarn. The yarn is produced by overfeeding the lighter dyeing filaments to a greater degree than the darker dyeing ones through a turbulent fluid-jet intermingling zone.
Abstract: In a cationic electrocoating process in which phosphoric acid is used as an acidic ionizing agent for the polymer in the coating composition, and in which excess phosphoric acid build-up in the bath is removed by ultrafiltration, phosphoric acid in the filtrate can be reacted with certain metals to make dissolved dihydrogen metal phosphate salt so that the filtrate can be returned to the electrocoating bath. In the bath, part of the dihydrogen metal phosphate salt is consumed by its deposition on the substrate as an insoluble metal phosphate salt.
Abstract: A vertically oriented centrifuge tube is placed in a rotor cavity and the open end sealed with a tapered plug. A resilient O-ring is placed in an annular groove formed in the top of the tapered plug and a retaining disc, secured to the open end of the cavity, wedges the plug into the open end of the centrifuge tube. The O-ring, being resilient, maintains an axial force which aids in retaining the tapered plug properly seated within the open end of the centrifuge tube, even during and following the stresses of centrifugation.

Abstract: The power control circuit described functions to vary the duty cycle of the alternating current signal supplied to the load. The duty cycle is varied by periodically generating a first signal, each half cycle of the alternating current signal, that is proportional to the actual power supplied to the load as a function of the duty cycle and wave form of the alternating current signal. A comparator compares this first with an error signal to vary the duty cycle in accordance with the power demanded by the error signal. The first signal is derived by evaluating the integral of the square of the voltage over each half cycle of the alternating current signal.

Abstract: Chlorinated organic compounds from the aqueous waste streams from a process for manufacturing and isomerizing dichlorobutenes and dehydrochorinating 3,4-dichlorobutene-1 to chloroprene, which is the principal monomer in the manufacture of neoprene rubber, are removed by means of a process, wherein the aqueous waste from the dichlorobutene-isomerization step and brine formed in the dehydrochlorination step are combined to produce an aqueous solution containing about 1-5% sodium chloride and the solution, while maintained at a pH of less than about 6, is extracted with a small amount of a liquid hydrocarbon. The liquid hydrocarbon extract is then incinerated, while the extracted aqueous solution is discharged into a natural body of water. In this way, the level of 1,4-dichlorobutene-2, which is toxic to fish, in the natural body of water can be maintained at a safe level.

Abstract: A method of recovering a high-grade lecithin and solvents from an oil-bearing full miscella which also contains lecithin and which results from an oilseed ternary solvent extraction process. The method may include a first step of phase separation of the oil-bearing miscella containing lecithin and the ternary solvents into a polar and a non-polar phase, and a second step of azeotropic distillation of the non-polar phase to recover a portion of the solvents, and to remove substantially all the water from the residual crude oil, thereby keeping the lecithin in solution. A commercial grade lecithin having good water dispersibility is subsequently recovered from the residual crude oil, and a small amount of highly water dispersible lecithin may be recovered from the polar phase by atmospheric distillation.
Abstract: A silver halide emulsion which is useful in photography is described. The silver halide grains are characterized by uniform and increased grain size and uniform crystal habit when a compound containing the .dbd.N--C(.dbd.S)--N.dbd. moiety is present during the formation of the grains in the precipitation and/or the ripening steps.

Abstract: In a CT scanner attenuation data are determined for a plurality of sets of radiation paths through a body and a representation of the distribution of attenuation in the body is obtained from them. It is known to recompute attenuation data for such paths from a first estimate of the representation to take account of heavily attenuating regions which cause errors due to, for example, changes of radiation hardness therein and to then recompute a corrected representation. Conventionally the original data are for sets of parallel beams and the recomputation (or second pass) is performed for parallel paths using the same algorithm, i.e. the same procedure of modifying electrical signals by electronic circuits specially constructed and configured to carry out the desired procedure. The original data can be for fan distributed sets of paths and processed in that form. Then the second pass, using the same algorithm, is for fan distributed paths.

Abstract: A half-wave regulator rectifier utilizes a silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) as the rectifying element between an alternator producing positive and negative voltage phases or waveforms and a battery charged by the alternator. The SCR is permitted to conduct charging currents through the battery during the positive voltage phases by means of a control circuit having a transistor connected to the control gate of the SCR. The control circuit monitors the alternator voltage and causes the transistor to inhibit conduction through the SCR above a regulated battery voltage unless charging current flows through the battery before the regulated battery voltage is reached by the alternator voltage. The regulator rectifier is protected against damage when abnormal conditions exist, such as no battery connection with the regulated system.
