  • Patent number: 6922005
Abstract: With actuators according to prior art, it is known that, in the inactive region, which is required for contact purposes, irregularities in expansion occur. These produce cracks in the piezoelectrically inactive electrode region, which may occur at regular intervals. As a result of the irregularities in expansion, the stresses accumulate in the passively expanded regions, up to a level at which they are relieved by crack formation. It is therefore proposed according to the invention that the contact surfaces (17), and therefore the inactive regions (15) assigned to them, of one or a predetermined number of electrodes of the same polarity (11; 30 to 37; 39, 40), arranged above one another in the same direction, are arranged offset to one another by a predetermined angle (22) of the size ?, opposite the contact surfaces (17), and therefore the inactive regions (15) assigned to them, of the preceding internal electrode or a predetermined number of preceding electrodes of the same alignment and the same polarity.

  • Publication number: 20050155977
Abstract: A monitor and method for reasonable confirmation of a vend from a vending machine includes a set of optical emitters positionable on one side of a dispensing area and a set of optical detectors, adapted to sense the optical energy of the emitters, positioned on an opposite side of the dispensing area. The emitters are spaced apart from each other and mounted on a supporting structure that can be installed on the one side of the dispensing area in a vending machine. The detectors similarly are spaced from one another on a supporting structure that can be installed on an opposite side of the dispensing area. A controller operates the emitters to individually turn on and off in a predetermined sequence. The controller checks for falsing of any detector during the off periods and monitors if any detector is blocked during the on periods. Upon sensed falsing or blockage, the controller generates an output signal.

  • Patent number: 6918363
Abstract: The valve drive apparatus of the invention comprises an exhaust valve drive mechanism capable of changing an open/close timing of an exhaust valve, and a control device which controls the exhaust valve drive apparatus so as to release the exhaust valve during an intake stroke, independently of an exhaust stroke, in an EGR mode. Preferably, the exhaust valve drive mechanism comprises a first exhaust cam which defines the exhaust valve releasing timing and the amount of valve lift in the exhaust stroke, and a second exhaust cam which defines the exhaust valve releasing timing and the amount of valve lift during the intake stroke. In an normal mode, the displacement of the first exhaust cam is transmitted to the exhaust valve, and in the EGR mode, the displacement of the second exhaust cam is transmitted to the exhaust valve, in addition to the displacement of the first exhaust cam.

  • Patent number: 6920228
Abstract: A lightweight communications headset includes a headband adapted to be worn on user's head. A speaker housing is carried by the headband and defines an acoustic chamber. A speaker mounted within projects sound waves into the acoustic chamber. The headband carries a pair of earpieces which are positionable adjacent to the user's ears for delivering sound thereto. The acoustic chamber is coupled to earpieces through acoustic passages which transmit sound waves produced in the acoustic chamber to the earpieces. The earpieces preferably include removable in-ear inserts, which may be constructed for insertion into the auditory canals of the user's ears. Since the in-ear inserts are removable, the headset can readily be configured for a variety of applications.

  • Patent number: 6918453
Abstract: A method of and system for directional drilling reduces the friction between the drill string and the well bore. A downhole drilling motor is connected to a drilling rig at the surface by a drill string. The drilling motor is oriented at a selected tool face angle. The drill string is rotated at the surface in a first direction until a first torque magnitude is reached without changing the tool face angle. The drill string is then rotated in the opposite direction until a second torque magnitude is reached, again without changing the tool face angle. The drill string is rotated back and forth between the first and second torque magnitudes. Pressure inside the drill string is measured, and the first and second torque magnitudes are adjusted in response to changes in the pressure.
