Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed that support multiple mobile address types using object-oriented programming techniques. A mobile address object class supports the creation of mobile address objects. The mobile address object class includes the test-and-branch code that supports each mobile address type. A CPA Mobile Address class allows mobile address information to be stored in CPAMA objects in a uniform manner. The CPA Mobile Address class provides the address retrieval functionality to map the stored mobile address information to a suitable format. The CPAMA class provides a set of constructors to create and initialize its data members using an appropriate format, such as an access channel format or an ANSI International Mobile Station Identifier format, and a set of destructors to de-initialize objects before they are destroyed. The address information can be extracted from a CPAMA object using a set of member functions.

Abstract: An executable shopping list (ESL) enables a user browsing an affiliate Web site's Web page to order, with a single action, a bundle of multiple items offered for sale by the affiliate's associated merchant Web site, wherein the bundle is one that is not offered or available for sale as a bundle to on-line visitors who directly access the merchant's Web site server. By selecting a link on the affiliate's Web page, the ESL is executed, thereby automatically loading the bundle of multiple items on that list into a virtual shopping cart at the merchant's Web site on behalf of the user. The virtual shopping cart, filled with the multiple items, is then returned to the user's browser for completion of the checkout procedure by the user. ESLs can be implemented on the affiliate site's side using what is referred to as smart bookmark technology, which records for later playback, the multiple steps required to load each item on the list into a shopping cart at the merchant's Web server.

Abstract: A recovery process allows a recovering replica in a replicated data storage system to recover from a current replica the changes to the data that it has missed during a failure while, at the same time, the system is processing new requests issued by the source. Sequence numbers, assigned by the source to write requests and stored by each replica in association with the data item that the write request modifies, are used by the recovery process to determine when a replica has missed one or more write requests and requires recovery. During recovery, the recovering replica ignores all requests directly received from the source, and replaces the contents of a data item with the data received from the current replica only if the newly received data item has a higher sequence number than the corresponding sequence number of the data item already stored in the recovering replica. It also updates data items in response to new write requests that are forwarded to it by the current replica.

Abstract: To improve the thermal management of an enclosure for electrical equipment or the like, one or more wall-mounted panels are provided. An air-filled space between each panel and the adjacent wall, door, or ceiling has insulative behavior when the air in the space is stagnant. Accordingly, thermal exchange through the wall, etc. is impeded. When the air in the air-filled space is circulated, thermal exchange is permitted.

Abstract: A MEMS device having a movable mirror pixel supported on a substrate and coupled to a motion actuator so as to enable rotation of the mirror pixel about an axis lying within the mirror plane. In one embodiment, the motion actuator has a movable electrode, on which the mirror pixel is mounted. The movable electrode is supported on the substrate by a pair of upright springs, each having two parallel segments joined at one end and disjoint at the other end. One disjoint segment end is coupled to the substrate, while the other disjoint segment end is coupled to the movable electrode. The end of the upright spring corresponding to the joined segment ends points away from the substrate such that (i) the spring body protrudes through a narrow slot in the mirror pixel and (ii) the mirror plane lies at about the mid-point of the spring.
Abstract: Techniques and systems for designing a network providing communication and location identification services are described. A solution point comprising parameters for each of a plurality of base stations is generated. A coverage and locatability performance value for the solution point is computed, as well as derivatives of the performance value. The coverage and locatability performance value and its derivatives are used to indicate favorable directions for searching for subsequent solution points, and subsequent solution points are generated and compared against previous solution points until an optimum solution point is found. The coverage and locatability performance value is a weighted sum of coverage and locatability values for each point in the service area of the network, with coverage values representing forward and reverse link quality and locatability values representing the probability that a point will experience an acceptable power level from at least four base stations.
Abstract: A scheduling apparatus flexibly integrates guaranteed-bandwidth (GB) and best-effort (BE) flows and comprises a combination of a primary weighted-round-robin (WRR) scheduler (PWS) and a secondary WRR scheduler (SWS). The PWS distributes service to the individual GB flows and determines the amount of service that the BE flow aggregate should receive during each frame. The SWS takes care of fairly distributing the service share of the BE aggregate over the individual BE flows. The scheduling apparatus divides the service frame in two subframes. In the first subframe, the PWS fulfills the bandwidth requirements of the GB flows. In the second subframe, the SWS distributes fair service to the BE flows. For each frame, the duration depends on the amount of bandwidth allocated to the GB flows and on the number of GB flows that are backlogged at the beginning of the frame. The amount of bandwidth globally available to BE flows (i.e.

Abstract: An apparatus includes an optical waveguide and an optical filter positioned to receive light from the optical waveguide. The optical waveguide includes a sequence of alternating first and second stripes. The sequence runs along a propagation direction in the optical waveguide. The first and second stripes are formed of different polarization states of a group III-nitride semiconductor. The optical filter removes light of a preselected frequency.
Abstract: The present invention generally provides optical signal transmission system having an optical signal source, at least one optical signal regenerator in series communication with the optical signal source via an optical signal communications medium, a dispersion module in series communication with the at least one optical signal regenerator via the optical signal communications medium, and a receiver in serial communication with the dispersion module via the optical signal communications medium. The dispersion compensation module inserts an amount of lumped dispersion into the system, which operates to improve the signal transmission characteristics.
Abstract: An Optical Transport Network (OTN) (comprising a number of OTN nodes) uses an Internet Protocol (IP) based control plane (out-of-band signaling on a separate wavelength). Each OTN node of the IP-based control plane performs dual-feeding and dual-selecting of signaling messages on diverse signaling paths. The IP-based control plane establishes a pair of physically disjoint signaling paths between every set of neighboring OTN nodes (pre-computed and pre-established physically disjoint primary and secondary message paths in the IP-based control plane).

Abstract: A method and apparatus for optical performance monitoring that provides for multi-rate and multi-protocol monitoring includes, identifying a protocol associated with each of a plurality of communication signals using respective data rates extracted therefrom, determining, for each of the plurality of communication signals, a respective bit-error rate (BER), and generating an alarm indicative of BER excursions beyond a protocol appropriate BER threshold level.
Abstract: In an electrostatic driving structure for a MEMS device or other electrostatically-driven device, non-insulating material is disposed on or adjacent a gap on the surface of a dielectric between adjacent electrodes and is electrically coupled to a source of potential, so as to form an electrostatic shield which reduces the effect of mobile charges in the dielectric gap on the forces generated by the electrostatic driving structure. The shield is made of non-insulating material and may, for example, be formed by plating of metal or epitaxial deposition of silicon onto the electrode.
Abstract: A switch or other processing element of a communication system is configured to detect automatically the particular version of an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) user-network interface (UNI) protocol or other signaling protocol utilized by a customer premises equipment (CPE) device or other device coupled to the switch. The switch analyzes at least one message received in a signaling channel from the coupled device in order to determine the particular version of the protocol, and stores an indicator of the particular version of the protocol for use in subsequent interaction with the coupled device. Call processing functions of the switch may be reconfigured based at least in part on the determination of the particular protocol version.
Abstract: A channel information detector, a method of detecting channel information and a communications node. In one embodiment, the channel information detector includes (1) an information retriever configured to extract data unit parameters from a plurality of data units progressing through a protocol stack and (2) an information analyzer, coupled to the information retriever, configured to collectively analyze the data unit parameters to deduce channel information therefrom.
Abstract: The present invention provides a concurrent dual-state proxy server for use with a session initiation protocol (SIP) network. In one embodiment, the concurrent dual-state proxy server includes a request receiver configured to receive a SIP request. Additionally, the concurrent dual-state proxy server also includes a state-determination controller coupled to the request receiver and configured to process the SIP request employing a transaction mode that corresponds to a condition of the SIP network.
Abstract: The present invention sets forth a methodology for providing improved downlink backhaul services from a radio network controller (RNC) to a plurality of base stations via a backhaul network that provides Ethernet services. The Ethernet services are provided by a group of provider edge (PE) switches and regular label switch routers (referred to as P switches). Base stations within the network are assigned into clusters, each of the clusters having a cluster ID. The RNC transmits packets to a given switch or switches out on the network based on a cluster ID included within the transmitted packet. The communications traffic is then multicast from at least one last hop switch in the network to candidate base stations on the basis of the cluster ID and an active set within the cluster. Advantageously, the clusters act as subgroups for more easily directing the transmission of the backhaul multicast traffic.
