Abstract: A method is provided for operating a wireless communication network (10) including a plurality of nodes (12a, 12b, 12c, 12d, 12e). Each of the nodes has a user database and is equipped to conduct authentication, authorization and accounting (AAA) functions for the network (10). The method includes employing a subset (optionally, two) of the plurality of nodes (12a, 12b, 12c, 12d, 12e) as active nodes. The active nodes use their respective user databases to conduct the AAA functions for the network (10). Changes to the user databases for the active nodes are logged to thereby update the same to reflect changes in information contained therein, and the user databases of the active nodes are synchronized. The active nodes are monitored to detect if one becomes disconnected from the network, and, if one of the active nodes becomes disconnected from the network, another of the plurality of nodes (12a, 12b, 12c, 12d, 12e) is employed as an active node.

Abstract: A so-called “OpenChannel™” conference is established by separating particular participants of the conference from those participants that are actually currently active in the conference. This establishes a type of virtual conference, i.e., meeting, that can be monitored by participants, i.e., users, without requiring them to be actively a part of the conference call. These particular participants are in a so-called monitor mode. These participants can readily change their state from the monitor mode to a listen mode or active mode, as desired. One advantage of this invention is that a long-term conference of months or even years duration can be set up, only incurring a cost to participants when they are active participants in the conference call.

Abstract: A method of providing circuit-switched and packet-switched calls on a single network comprises receiving (301), at a local switch, a plurality of calls that are comprised of at least one packet-switched call and at least one circuit-switched call and determining (305) a measure of the plurality of calls. Based on the measure of the plurality of calls, a first set of resources (117), from a plurality of resources between the local switch and a network switch, is allocated to circuit-switched calls, and a second set of resources (121), from the plurality of resources between the local switch and the network switch, is allocated to packet-switched calls.
Abstract: Techniques and infrastructure are provided for supporting global customization. The invention enables persona profiles of user information to be maintained, and such persona profiles to be accessed by merchants. Via the persona abstraction, users control what information is grouped into a persona profile, and can selectively enable a merchant to read one of these profiles. The infrastructure of the invention employs a persona server that assists users in managing their personae. The infrastructure of the invention separates this from the profile databases at which persona profile information is stored, to eliminate any single point at which different persona profiles can be tied to the same user. Since merchants also have privacy concerns, the infrastructure of the invention provides a data protection model based on tainting, by which merchants can limit how the information they contribute can be exposed.

Abstract: Reconnection of a mobile unit to a call session controlled by a first MSC is supported responsive to a network-initiated or mobile-originated reconnect attempt even in instances where the mobile unit has roamed to a border cell controlled by a second MSC. In a network-initiated reconnect attempt, the first MSC sends a suspended call page request to a second MSC. The second MSC pages the mobile unit, sets up a bearer channel to the mobile unit, and sends to the first MSC a suspended call page response including indicia of the bearer channel set up by the second MSC. The first MSC establishes a bearer channel to the second MSC thereby reconnecting the mobile unit to the call session. In a mobile-originated reconnect attempt, the mobile unit sends a mobile-originated reconnect message to the second MSC.

Abstract: A method enables the use of a secondary pilot signal and a secondary antenna(s) in the forward link of a CDMA-based cellular network employing a slotted transmission scheme with a time-multiplexed primary pilot signal, with backwards compatibility. The forward link is divided into a number of time slots. For communications with “legacy” mobile stations that expect transmissions from a single, primary antenna (and that expect a single, primary pilot signal), during some of the time slots, only the primary antenna is used for transmissions, including transmitting the primary pilot signal. Neither the secondary pilot channel nor any other signals from the secondary antenna are transmitted. During the remaining time slots: (i) the primary pilot signal is transmitted from the primary antenna, and the secondary pilot signal is transmitted from the secondary antenna, but at different times; and (ii) data meant for the legacy mobile stations is not transmitted.
Abstract: Systems and techniques for mediating communication between applications over a message transport bus. A software wrapper includes a virtual bus wrapper presenting an interface to the applications, with the interface being presented such that the message transport bus is transparent to the applications. The wrapper also includes a bus specific wrapper to adapt the message transport bus to the virtual bus wrapper, as well as a support wrapper. Changes to the applications being supported or to the message transport bus can be accommodated by changes to the virtual bus wrapper or to the bus specific wrapper, respectively. In particular, changes to the bus specific wrapper allow migration to a new or changed message transport bus or a system using a different message transport bus without a need to adapt each application to the new bus.
Abstract: A method for exploiting the diversity of a multi-carrier cellular system's frequency bands, for purposes of increasing network capacity, involves a base station transmitting a pilot signal on each frequency band to a plurality of mobile stations. Each mobile station measures the SIR of each pilot signal on the frequency bands, and this information is transmitted back to the base station. The base station may be configured to utilize this information in a number of manners, all of which are intended to increase channel capacity. For example, on each frequency band, the base station may transmit data signals only to those mobiles stations with the best signal quality on that frequency band. Additionally, the base station may transmit signals to one or more mobile stations across one or more frequency bands simultaneously, with transmissions on each band being adapted to the corresponding channel conditions.
Abstract: A new mail transport protocol is proposed for use over a reliable byte-stream transport. This protocol is faster, simpler and more streaming than prior methods, and handles binary and unicode data more efficiently. The protocol requires fewer communication round trips between servers per message transferred than existing methods. It transmits and receives byte data as is without requiring further per-byte processing on advanced operating systems such as UNIX, and requires only new-line processing in text on legacy operating systems.

Abstract: The operation of a multicast network is enhanced by shifting the responsibility for performing congestion control with regulation for the transmission of multicast data packets from the transmitter to the receivers, such that each receiver computes a congestion control value using particular statistics that it accumulates and then forwards it congestion control value to the source/transmitter. The source then regulates its transmission of data packets in accordance with a selected one of the congestion control values that it receives. Moreover, a hierarchical reporting network may be used to convey the regulation values from the receivers to the source such that congestion control values generated by the receivers are consolidated at various layers in the hierarchical reporting network so that the source receives consolidated control values from just the receivers connected directly to the source, rather than a value from each of the receivers.
