Abstract: Units of traffic are routed between nodes in a network on corresponding sets of trunks, such that the traffic is balanced between disjoint paths. A restoration process for the traffic is implemented using service layer or transport layer switching. In a first embodiment, first and second nodes are connected by first and second sets of trunks, with each of the trunks in a given set of trunks supporting a designated portion of a given one of the units of traffic. The units of traffic are then routed such that a first half of a given one of the units of traffic is routed on a first one of the trunks in a given one of the sets of trunks, and a second half of the given unit is routed on a second one of the trunks in the given set of trunks. In other embodiments, the first and second nodes are connected by first and second sets of trunks so as to form a four-trunk ring, with each of the first and second sets of trunks including a primary trunk and a backup trunk.

Abstract: A light weight antenna system and corresponding lightweight transmission lines are disclosed that are characterized as having an extremely light weight relative to prior such systems and lines. An inflatable body having an inner surface connected to an outer surface with a plurality of support structures, such as connecting tubes. Antenna elements are disposed on the outer surface of the inflatable body to form, for example, a phased array antenna. Coaxial transmission lines are used to transmit signals to and from an antenna element and are, in one embodiment, created by disposing an inner conductor within the aforementioned connecting tubes. Such a transmission line may be utilized in a number of applications, such as to connect a base station to an antenna system of a wireless communications network. In another embodiment, quasi coaxial transmission lines are formed by disposing flexible membrane shields around a transmission elements.
Abstract: An electromagnetic shielding structure has conductive parts for blocking propagation of electromagnetic interference, whereof at least one has an appendage or an edge configuration that is shaped so as to bite into the edge of the other of the conductive parts, such as along a narrowing groove. The appendage or edge can have a structure resembling an insulation displacement connector, but is arranged to engage the edge of a sheet-like or planar shielding element, as opposed to biting into an insulated wire. The connection achieves both electrical and mechanical connection between the parts, preferably thereby completing at least part of a shielding enclosure.

Abstract: An audible signaling device uses one or more digital signal processors to modify the shape of a sound field to put high sound pressure levels only in a predetermined pattern, thus minimizing undesirable high volume levels in adjacent areas. Using digital signal processing techniques, and a plurality of high power amplifiers and loudspeakers mounted in an array on a moving vehicle, a carefully engineered sound field can be produced. The shape of this sound field is controlled by the frequencies amplitudes, and phases of the signals, as well as the characteristics and placements of the speakers in the array.
Abstract: Wavelength control and stabilization of a laser is achieved by a practical, inexpensive, and accurate technique adapted for most optical transmission system applications by a method involving a laser characterization phase and a laser wavelength control and stabilization phase. This technique is applicable to both single mode lasers and multimode lasers. It is especially useful in those applications where the desired laser output power can vary over a wide range, including relatively low power above the lasing threshold.

Abstract: A method and apparatus regulate the admission control of, and requests for routing of, virtual circuits in a network by determining network resource requirements for the virtual circuits. The method is generalized for the shared-memory architecture of a network node, to allocate a buffer size value, Bi, to an output port, i, for use in the effective bandwidth computation. A static allocation policy is utilized to allocate the available buffer, BSMF, to each output port, i. The allocated buffer is determined by selecting a value from a range having a lower bound obtained by partitioning the buffer, BSMF, to evenly divide the buffer space among all the output ports, such that ? i ? B i = B SMF ; and having an upper bound obtained by using the total available buffer, BSMF, for each port in their computation of effective bandwidths. The network resource requirements are based on a set of parameters used to control the flow of information from a communications device onto the virtual circuit.
Abstract: The controller controls the amplifier and a modulated power supply, supplying power to the amplifier, by detecting an RF envelope of a signal input to the amplifier. Predistortion of the amplifier synchronous with changes of bias is provided using a look-up table. Specifically, amplitude predistortion, phase predistortion and DC voltage level adjustments are made to the RF signal. Adjustments for gain and phase variation are applied synchronously with bias changes.

Abstract: A circulator is used as a notch filter having a notch at a notch frequency band outside its frequency band of operation as a circulator. It has been observed that circulators operate as a notch filter at a relatively narrow band of operation outside its typical band of operation as a circulator. In certain embodiments, the circulator operates as a narrowband notch filter with sharp edges. Such a notch filter can be used between frequency bands carrying communications signals to reduce energy from one frequency band from spilling into a different frequency band. Since the notch has been observed to be relatively narrow and deep with sharp edges, such a notch filter can be used to reduce the guard bands between frequency bands, thereby increasing the amount of bandwidth that can de used to transmit communications signals. Furthermore, since a typical ferrite circulator is a relatively low cost component, the resulting notch filter can also be of low cost.
Abstract: A system and method are provided for processing audio and speech signals using a pitch and voicing dependent spectral estimation algorithm (voicing algorithm) to accurately represent voiced speech, unvoiced speech, and mixed speech in the presence of background noise, and background noise with a single model. The present invention also modifies the synthesis model based on an estimate of the current input signal to improve the perceptual quality of the speech and background noise under a variety of input conditions. The present invention also improves the voicing dependent spectral estimation algorithm robustness by introducing the use of a Multi-Layer Neural Network in the estimation process. The voicing dependent spectral estimation algorithm provides an accurate and robust estimate of the voicing probability under a variety of background noise conditions. This is essential to providing high quality intelligible speech in the presence of background noise.

Abstract: An imaging system includes a pulsed laser, a pre-compensator for chromatic dispersion, a transmission optical fiber, and a GRIN lens. The pre-compensator chirps optical pulses received from the laser. The transmission optical fiber transports the chirped optical pulses from the pre-compensator. The GRIN lens receives the transported optical pulses from the transmission optical fiber. The GRIN lens has a wider optical core than the transmission optical fiber and substantially narrows the transported optical pulses received from the transmission optical fiber.
Abstract: For use in a wireless communication network that includes a transmitter having a multi-element transmit antenna array, an information hiding system and a method of hiding information. In one embodiment, the information hiding system includes an information spreading subsystem that is configured to scramble the information across the multi-element transmit antenna array. The information hiding system further includes a coherence modification subsystem that is configured to reduce channel coherence randomly during transmission of the scrambled information via the multi-element transmit antenna array. By hiding the information, the information hiding system advantageously reduces an unauthorized eavesdropper's ability to determine the contents of the transmitted information.
Abstract: The capacity of a reverse link is improved by realizing a scheme to effect sharp changes in pilot channel transmit power (PCTP) and data channel to pilot power ratio (DCPR), coordinated with the start of the data channel transmission. The change in pilot power and data channel to pilot power ratio is also applicable to mobiles that use multiple pilots and/or multiple antennas at the transmitter and/or receiver.
Abstract: An optoelectronic transducer comprises a unipolar, intraband active region and a micro-cavity resonator. The resonator includes a 2D array of essentially equally spaced regions that exhibits resonant modes. Each of the spaced regions has a depth that extends through the active region and has an average refractive index that is different from that of the active region. The refractive index contrast, the spacing of the spaced regions, and the dimensions of the spaced regions are mutually adapted so that the array acts as a micro-cavity resonator and so that at least one frequency of the resonant modes of the array falls within the spectrum of an optoelectronic parameter of the active region (i.e., the gain spectrum where the transducer is a laser; the absorption spectrum where the transducer is a photodetector). In a first embodiment, the transducer is an ISB laser, whereas in a second embodiment it is a unipolar, intraband photodetector.

Abstract: The transmission power is adjusted of a Forward Access Channel (FACH) from a base station to a mobile user terminal in a network for mobile telecommunications. The method comprises steps as follows. The base station sends a signal at a first transmission power level to the mobile user terminal. The mobile user terminal then sends a report of one or more parameter values dependent upon measured signal quality provided a predetermined reporting criterion is met. The base station then adjusts its transmission power to the mobile user terminal in consequence so as to maintain the measured signal quality within acceptable limits.
