Abstract: A scheme is described for mitigating the effects of polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) in a wave-division multiplex (WDM) optical communication system having one or more transmission links with one or more quasi-static waveguide sections coupled by one or more non-static coupling sections. A transmitter is coupled to the transmission link and is adapted to transmit optical signals through the transmission link with wavelength channel spacing of the optical signals greater than about the PMD correlation bandwidth of at least one of the one or more quasi-static waveguide sections, so that the PMD induced outage probability for the system is optimized.

Active organic semiconductor devices.
Abstract: In a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) system in which a Serving GPRS Support Node operates a leaky bucket algorithm to control data flow, a packet control unit in the base station is arranged so that on connection of a new mobile, a flow control message in the form of new values of B the maximum bucket capacity and R the leak rate is sent to the Serving GPRS Support Node only when it is known that the new connection is non-bursty. In the Temporary Block Flow queue for the new connection, a threshold is set at a queue length which ensures that at least two Logical Link Layer-Protocol Data Units are received before the threshold is reached. New values of B and R are then sent, the new value of B being related to the maximum data capacity of the newly connected mobile.

Abstract: An electromagnetic shield structure (100) has an elongated conductive wall (102) that continuously or discontinuously defines a shielding perimeter and has a flange (104) laying over laterally to form a J-shaped hook (106) in cross section. A conductive cover or lid (108) engages over the standing wall (102) and has a depending side wall skirt (110) that has a flange (112) and forms a J-shaped hook (114) facing opposite from the hook (106) of the elongated wall (102). The cover (108) is pressed onto the wall (102) for assembly, causing the flanges (104) and (112) to deflect and snap over one another in the space between the overlapping skirt (110) and wall (102). The shield enclosure (122) can be disassembled without damage by applying a tool (116) through an opening (118) in the outer one of either the skirt (110) or wall (102), to deflect and disengage the flanges (104) and (112) in the space between the overlapped skirt (110) and wall (102).
Abstract: Signals are developed for use in a wireless system with multiple transmit and multiple receive antennas so that even in the face of some correlation the most open-loop capacity that can be achieved using a substantially open-loop system with a channel of that level of correlation is obtained. In accordance with the principles of the invention, the signals transmitted from the various antennas are processed so as to improve their ability to convey the maximum amount of information. More specifically, the data to be transmitted is divided into M+1 substreams, where M is the number of transmit antennas. Each transmit antenna is supplied with a combination signal that is made up of a weighted version of a common one of the substreams and a weighted version of a respective one of the substreams that is supplied uniquely for that antenna, so that there are M transmit signals. A receiver having N antennas receives the M transmit signals as combined by the channel and reconstitutes the original data therefrom.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for completing a priority call to a wireless border switch. A priority or preemption request is transmitted as part of the signaling messages used to set up a call. A border switch is a switch which is used in conjunction with the switch indicated by the last-seen pointer from an HLR entry for the called terminal to page a called station. The switch indicated by the last-seen pointer transmits the priority request to a border switch, to indicate that the call should be given priority treatment. Further, preemption service for calls terminating on a wireless station can be provided.

Abstract: Systems and techniques for entry and presentation of project planning information, showing activities in their geographic context. Information relating to activities and groupings of activities is entered, updated and presented. Information associated with one or more groupings of activities is associated with a graphical icon, with the appearance of the icon changing in response to changes in the associated information. The icon is placed in a graphical display, with the graphical display showing geographic information, such as a map, and the icon being placed in a map location showing the location of the activities associated with the icon. The graphical display maintains links to the information associated with the icon so that updating the information changes the appearance of the icon, calling attention to changes in their geographic context.

Abstract: The present invention describes an algorithm for the assignment of channels used by access points (APs) in wireless LANs in a dynamic way in order to achieve the best performance. The assignment of channels is based on a procedure in which an AP is passively listening on the other channels during idle time. The AP is calculating the optimal channel with the least interference and sharing. If the AP experiences too much disturbance, it will decide to switch to the calculated optimal channel.
Abstract: A new annular-core optical fiber is useful, inter alia, for stabilizing the behavior of an optical attenuator based on a Long Period Grating (LPG) against fluctuations in the polarization of the fundamental optical signal. The fiber dimensions and ?n are selected such that when a LPG of some period is used to couple fundamental-mode radiation in the fiber into higher-order modes, the wavelength of peak coupling into an HE mode is removed by at least 30 nm from the wavelength of peak coupling into the nearer of a TE mode or a TM mode.
