    Abstract: A multilevel session management protocol is provided to support communications mobility in a telecommunications system. A session is separated into two independent layers—a terminal session layer and an application session layer. A session management agent is implemented as a module operating locally in a wireless terminal. A second session management agent is implemented as a module operating remotely in the Internet. Any session management agent module can communicate with another session management agent module by use of the session management protocol. The two session management agent modules use a multiplexed TCP connection for conveying TCP data traffic therebetween. As such, the session management protocol can be used with any application that uses an Internet TCP as a transport protocol.

    Abstract: A fin-stabilized projectile includes a projectile body having a rear portion defining a rearwardly open cavity and a stabilizing assembly which has an axially slidable fin support in the cavity. The fin support has a retracted position in which the fin support is withdrawn into the cavity and an outwardly shifted position in which the fin support projects from the projectile body. A plurality of fins are pivotally held in the fin support. Each fin has a folded state in which it is withdrawn in the fin support when the latter is in the retracted position and a deployed state in which it is unfolded and extends substantially externally of the fin support when the latter is in its outwardly shifted position. When the projectile has left the weapon barrel, the fin support is axially shifted and the fins move into the deployed state.

    Abstract: A high quality-factor, tunable radio frequency or microwave resonator is disclosed. The resonator includes one or more microelectromechanical switches positioned along its length. The switches are comprised of metal membrane bridges spanning the microstrip resonator. The bridges are connected to radial stubs that comprise reactive loads. An electrostatic potential differential between the bridge and microstrip resonator causes the bridge to collapse, thereby coupling a radial stub to the microstrip. The imposition of the reactive loads on the resonator causes the resonant frequency to change. Multiple resonators employed in a filter configuration can be variably coupled using microelectromechanical bridges that engage or disengage capacitive air gaps between two microstrip lines, to control filter bandwidth over wide tuning ranges.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a process for disproportionation of potassium naphthoate to the dipotassium salt of 2,6-NDA which gives reproducible improved yields of up to 40% which comprises: a) reacting naphthoic acid in the presence of excess base to produce a disproportionation feed comprising a finely dispersed disordered salt mixture of excess base salts and naphthoic acid salts, wherein the feed is prepared by the steps of: (1) Reacting naphthoic acid in the presence of excess base selected from the group consisting of carbonates and bicarbonates to form a salt; (2) Drying said salt mixture by a method which forms a highly mixed disordered salt mixture characterized by a differential scanning calorimeter(DSC) signature characterized by low melting peaks not previously observed in the salt; and b) Disproportionating said solid salts in the presence of a disproportionation catalyst to form the dipotassium salts of 2,6-NDA.

    Abstract: A system and method of providing high-speed wireless local loop access using a wireless access multiplexer disposed in an access network coupled to a plurality of network termination (NT) nodes. The access multiplexer is coupled via an aggregate path to a Point of Presence (POP) switch on a common carrier running at a high aggregate bit rate. A Network Management System (NMS) is provided with a database for storing service subscription profiles for subscribers associated with corresponding NT nodes. The subscription profiles include information regarding subscribers' bandwidth requirements and other Quality of Service (QOS) parameters as per their subscriptions. Using the Label Distribution Protocol (LDP) messages and procedures, the access multiplexer establishes a plurality of wireless access channels to the corresponding network termination nodes based on the service subscription profiles stored in the NMS.

    Abstract: An apparatus is provided for determining the mass flow rate of a fluid using thermal means. The apparatus utilizes resistance temperature detectors having substantially linear temperature dependencies to determine the mass flow rate of a fluid. The apparatus maintains a constant ratio between resistances of the first and second resistance temperature detectors, the amount of current necessary to maintain the constant ratio corresponding to the mass flow rate of the fluid. The apparatus includes a microprocessor wherein an algorithm relating the current and mass flow rate including thermophysical properties of the fluid, sensor thermal resistance, and probe stem loss information provides the fluid mass flow rate based upon calibration information. Operation in alternate fluids without the need for recalibration is possible utilizing calibration constants obtained in the primary fluid and substitution of thermophysical properties and stem loss characteristics of each fluid in which operation is desired.

    Abstract: The present invention describes a method of migrating a mobile station, operating within an integrated D-AMPS/EDGE wireless telecommunication network, from the D-AMPS packet portion of the network to the EDGE/GPRS packet portion of the network. The technique includes accessing the control channels of both the D-AMPS and EDGE networks in order to obtain the necessary timing advance and packet transfer identifier for use with the GPRS packet system. In an embodiment of the invention, the MS makes a first access on a D-AMPS control channel to obtain a pointer to a reserved radio block on an EDGE packet control channel. The MS makes a second access on the EDGE control channel as specified by the reserved radio block which contains a particular frequency and timeslot location. The MS then sends a series of shortened bursts to the network such that a Timing Advance Index (TAI) value is calculated from the bursts and sent back to the MS.

    Abstract: The invention relates to sensors for detecting a time-varying current by employing a plurality of coils with separate windings, disposed on separate toroidal cores, that are placed in close proximity of each other so that each coil responds independently to the same current. The current produces a time-varying magnetic field which in turn induces a plurality of voltages across the coils that can be combined to provide a resultant signal. Some embodiments of the invention employ coils with opposite windings to obtain signals with opposite phases and combine these signals through differential detection means to obtain a combined signal. One aspect of the invention relates to production of a wide-band or a selectable band-width sensor by preparing at least one coil to be dissimilar with respect to the others. In addition, the invention provides provisions for easy calibration of the sensor.

    Abstract: A method and system for quality-based transmission power control in a cellular communications system are disclosed, whereby a network operator can specify the transmission quality requirements using a measurement that better reflects the actual quality perceived by the users. All transmitter power levels in the network can be controlled by identical power regulators, each of which can adapt to individual traffic situations in order to achieve the specified quality. For example, in a GSM frequency-hopping network, the FER together with the parameters estimated from the current traffic situation, are mapped onto a target C/I, which in turn, the power control algorithm strives to achieve. Consequently, the power regulators can adapt to the traffic situation experienced by each receiver.

    Abstract: A method, arrangement, and system enable adaptive calibration of an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) from reference signals with unknown parameter(s) that may vary (e.g., a varying frequency). An analog reference signal s(t) is supplied to an ADC to be calibrated. The output x(n) of the ADC is used by a, e.g., sine-wave reconstruction filter to reconstruct an estimate ŝ(n) of the sampled instances of the signal s(t). A recursive frequency estimator within the sine-wave reconstruction filter produces a frequency estimate of the analog reference signal s(t) from the signal x(n). An adaptive reconstruction filter uses this frequency estimate and the signal x(n) to produce the estimate ŝ(n). When a convergence detector determines that the adaptive reconstruction filter has converged, the estimate ŝ(n) is used to alter values that are stored in a correction table. During functional operation of the ADC, the correction table is used to correct the output values of the ADC.
