  • Patent number: 5566200
Abstract: A process and low-shaft furnace for disposing of filter material. The material to be disposed of is charged via a charging device onto and/or into a slag bath in the furnace. Simultaneously, additives comprising fluxing agents, slag-making constituents and reducing agents are introduced into the slag via a separate immersion lance. Finally, during the introduction of the additives the variables forming the electrical resistance, essentially the electrodiameter, center distance between the electrodes, level of the slag bath, and the immersion depth of the electrodes in the bath are adjusted so that 70% of the electrical energy is introduced between the electrodes and 30% of the electrical energy is introduced between the electrodes and the metal bath on the hearth bottom.

  • Patent number: 5560275
Abstract: The present invention relates to a drive of the fluid or electric type having a device for controlling an element for transmitting a driving force to a reciprocating or otherwise moveable or displaceable element and an arrangement for damping the driving force at at least one end of the element's travel. The driving force element is at least single-acting, and the drive may also include mechanical shock absorbers and sensors arranged in the area of the ends of travel. In order to achieve an especially soft striking or contact at the end of travel position of the driving force element, the control device includes a counter-pulse module which, via a pre-positioning sensor associated with at least one movement direction, causes a chronologically settable changeover from a previously flowed-through or activated first switching element associated with a first end of travel position to a previously unactivated second switching element associated with a second end of travel position.

  • Patent number: 5555259
Abstract: A process and device for melting scrap in a direct current-driven closed shaft furnace. The scrap is fed with an annular cross-section into one end of the furnace and hot gases which flow against the falling scrap are sucked below the scrap feeding area via an outer cylindrical wall of the scrap column. The inner free surface of the ring-shaped flat cross-section of the scrap is reduced before the scrap reaches the melting zone. In the melting zone, the scrap is exposed to an electric arc at the center of the flat cross-section. The arc furnace has a cathode that is held by an electrode bearing device which is formed as a concentric pipe with respect to the central axis of the furnace vessel. At one end the pipe is conically tapered and at the other end it is supported on the shaft of the furnace by bearing arms.

  • Patent number: 5543775
Abstract: A process for producing a thin-film measurement resistor in which an electrically insulating work material with a low specific heat capacity serves as substrate material, a metal film, preferably platinum, being applied thereto. The lateral electrical resistor is then structured and trimmed by erosive after-treatment, and the metal film is passivated in a final process step. The resistor element reacts more quickly to changes in temperature, the cover layer is extremely resistant to corrosion, and the entire construction is simple to produce in that glass is used as a substrate material and is provided, before applying the metal film, with a bonding agent layer of Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 which is substantially thinner than the metal film. The metal film is then applied by evaporation and structured by sputter etching. Finally, the metal film is provided with a protective coat of SiO.sub.x.

  • Patent number: 5540076
Abstract: A cold pilger rolling mill which has a roll stand that can be moved back and forth, a pair of cranks each having a crankpin, a pair of thrust rods that connect the roll stand to the crankpins, and centrifugal counterweights connected to the cranks so as to be eccentric to the rotational axis of the crank to at least partially balance inertial mass. The centrifugal weights are staggered by 180 degrees to the connection point of the respective thrust rod and crank and each crank and its associated counterweights forms a submechanism. The submechanisms are arranged in a mirror image around a vertical plane which intersects a roll axis. A common drive is provided for driving the roll stand. The drive includes a drive shaft that connects the submechanisms to one another and is located beneath a rolling plane. The submechanisms have rotational axes that run horizontally parallel to one another, and the drive turns the cranks in opposite directions.

  • Patent number: 5533583
Abstract: A passenger automobile or truck contains a unit which is formed by an internal combustion engine and a generator and which powers electric motors coupled with driving wheels of the vehicle via an energy distributor in the form of power electronics. An accumulator which can likewise be coupled with the electric motors via the energy distributor is provided as an additional power source. An electronic control unit receives driving signals from an accelerator pedal, in particular a position signal and a speed signal. The position signal of the throttle is interpreted as a request for a determined permanent output to be supplied by the internal combustion engine. The internal combustion engine is revved up to a new operating point in an "optimal" manner (e.g. with favorable fuel consumption), for example when a higher output is requested, while the generator is entirely or partially uncoupled from the load. Energy for accelerating the vehicle is provided in the meantime by the accumulator.

  • Patent number: 5520372
Abstract: A process and installation for preheating scrap containing organic matter, in which flue gas is afterburned in an afterburner combustion chamber at a temperature at more than 1200.degree. C. The after-burned hot flue gases are guided, without being cleaned, via a heat exchanger. Fresh intake air is heated in the heat exchanger by sensible heat of the after-burned hot flue gases. • Patent number: 5515937
Abstract: A motor vehicle including a unit (2) consisting of an internal combustion engine, a generator supplying current to electric motors (12, 16) coupled with driving wheels (14, 18) over an energy distributor/power electronics system (8) and a battery which is supplied with energy by the internal combustion engine/generator unit via the energy distributor (2). An electronic control system (20) controls the energy distributor (8) as a function of a driving signal according to boundary conditions, for example, according to the least possible specific fuel consumption. A temporary increase in the power required to drive the motors can be supplied by the battery (22). In the event that the increase in power lasts for longer periods, the internal combustion engine, which as far as possible operates in a state that ensures low fuel consumption, is accelerated in order to cover the demand for high power.
