  • Patent number: 5578228
Abstract: The laser beam melts a plate or strip workpiece with the formation of a vapor capillary at a cutting point and the melt is driven off by a cutting gas consisting of a mixture of inert gas and hydrogen gas, the hydrogen gas making up to 25% by volume of the cutting gas. In order to maintain the vapor capillary, the cutting gas is taken to the surface of the melt at the cutting point at such a pressure and with such a pressure distribution that the temperature at the surface of the melt is kept at boiling point and the melt is continuously driven out of the cutting seam in the side away from the cutting direction of the vapor capillary. The plate or strip workpiece can be a magnetic steel sheet. An additional stream of gas, liquid, or solid particles can be used to move melt out of the cutting seam.

  • Patent number: 5564773
Abstract: A vehicle bed cover including a frame connected to a bed of a vehicle. A first cover portion is supported on the frame. The first cover portion extends over substantially one-half of the longitudinal extent of the bed. The first cover portion includes a pair of gull-wing doors pivotable in opposite directions about a central support of the first cover portion. The central support extends in a direction substantially parallel to the longitudinal extent of the bed. A second cover portion is slidably supported by the guide frame for telescoping movement between a first position covering substantially another one-half of the bed and a second position located under the first cover portion. An end panel on said second cover portion is pivotable relative to the second cover portion to a closed position to prevent access to the bed.

  • Patent number: 5553514
Abstract: A method of smart damping resonance torsional vibrations in a member capable of transmitting torque, such as a pulse driven rotating shaft. The damping system damps resonance torsional vibrations in the driven shaft by automatically imparting periodic torsional impulses in the opposite direction to the twisting motion from the torsional vibration. The periodic torsional impulses are of sufficient energy to effect damping in the driven shaft. In one specific vehicle driveline embodiment, a housing is attached to one end of the crank shaft of an internal combustion engine. The housing contains a high speed damper flywheel and an eddy current brake attached to the shaft with the ability to apply torsional impulses to the damper flywheel. The eddy current brake is controlled by a computer that continuously receives rotation rate information and torsional vibration amplitude signals from sensors mounted on the crank shaft.

  • Patent number: 5501591
Abstract: A blow molding machine comprising two calibration stations and an extruder arranged between the two calibration stations. The machine produces hose-shaped parisons to be blown into hollow bodies by mold forms in an alternating sequence and in a periodical sequence at the respective calibration stations. An extruder is located along a vertically extending longitudinal center plane of the blow molding machine along which the mold forms are displaceable back and forth between the associated calibration stations and the extruder. A transport device transports the respective hollow bodies blown at the calibration stations to at least one post processing station in sequence. A transport mask is displaceable back and forth along a transport path disposed at a lateral distance from the longitudinal center plane of the blow molding machine and parallel thereto.

  • Patent number: 5482106
Abstract: A process for continuous casting of a metal comprises continuously withdrawing a strand of the metal from a mold along a strand withdrawal direction, measuring the expansion of an inside wall of the mold along the strand withdrawal direction to obtain a component of inside wall expansion in the strand withdrawal direction due to mechanical forces exerted on the inside wall, and controlling the speed of withdrawal based on the component of inside wall expansion in the strand withdrawal direction due to mechanical forces. If the component of inside wall expansion of in the strand withdrawal direction due to mechanical forces exceeds certain limit values, the withdrawal step is slowed or interrupted, thereby eliminating break-outs due to cobbles. In an embodiment of the invention, expansion measurements are also taken along a direction transverse to the withdrawal direction, enabling the elimination of the component of expansion in the withdrawal direction due to heat.

  • Patent number: 5479982
Abstract: A method for producing a steel strip which has been cast as a stand in a cooled oscillating continuous chill mould, comprises squeezing the strand emerging from the chill mould until it has a first cross-sectional thickness (40-50 mm), followed by hot rolling the strand until it has a second cross-sectional thickness (2-25 mm). Deviations in the normal path of travel of the strand following hot rolling are corrected by adjusting the thickness to which the strand is subjected during the first squeezing step.

  • Patent number: 5474633
Abstract: A heat applied transfer press includes a manual actuator for displacing platens between open and closed positions as well as a pneumatic engager for pressing the platens together when the actuator has been moved to the closed position. A sensor determines when the actuator has moved the upper platen to the closed position so as to permit application of pressure to urge the heated upper platen toward and against transfer indicia and the apparel arranged on the lower platen. Another sensor determines when the pressure application has been initiated to time the duration of the pressure application. The control automatically releases the pressure and opens the press after the time duration matches a selected time duration set by the control.

  • Patent number: 5422173
Abstract: An improved method for producing a multi-colored emblem which may be bonded to a fabric is disclosed which provides an emblem with an embroidered appearance. The emblem is easily heat sealable onto difficult to adhere fabrics. The method generally involves providing a first woven material blank, providing a barrier layer of thermoplastic material, laminating the barrier layer onto one side of said material blank to form an assembly, cutting said assembly to a specific configuration, sewing a thread about the periphery of the cut assembly, and laminating said assembly onto a second woven material blank having a different color. This second assembly is again cut to a complimentary larger configuration and also provided with a thread about the periphery. The two material blanks are then heat sealed together and an adhesive layer is provided to the exposed barrier layer.

  • Patent number: 5366539
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the desulphurization treatment of a pig iron melt in a container. The characterizing feature of the invention is that the treatment is performed in three phases:In the initial phase such solids are injected that deoxidize the initial slag and increase its basicity and also produce a circulatory movement of the melt and form a basic deoxidized cover slag. In the middle phase the desulphurizing agent is injected for the main desulphurization and in the final phase such solids are injected that purify the melt and produce a final desulphurization and also so influence the desulphurization slag formed that its content of iron granules is low.
