  • Patent number: 5204505
Abstract: The invention relates to a process and apparatus for the welding of strips 1, 2 without a filler by means of a laser beam 6. To keep the gap width of the joint edges formed by the strips 1, 2 at the joint as small as possible, disposed downstream of the welding focus in the direction L in which the strips 1, 2 run is a cooling device 10, 11, the cooling intensity is controlled to a constant small gap width in dependence on the gap width measured immediately upstream of the welding focus, referred to the direction L.

  • Patent number: 5201363
Abstract: The method comprises effecting the solidification of the metal in a continuous casting ingot mould constituted by two cooled rolls (2) rotating in opposite directions and disposed in confronting relation so as to define a casting space therebetween, continuously extracting from the ingot mould a solidified steel strip (3), and, below the ingot mould, subjecting the strip to a quenching medium (6) so as to cool it sufficiently rapidly to prevent formation of austenite. This medium may be formed by a quenching bath placed in a container (4) disposed under the rolls (2) and having a bottom provided with an opening (5) for the passage of the solidified strip (3). The quenching medium may also be formed by an inert gas in the liquid state blown onto the product by nozzles. The steel strips obtained are easier to shear and coiled at the output end of the casting line owing to the absence of martensite in the ferritic matrix.

  • Patent number: 5200974
Abstract: An electrode carrier arm for an electric arc furnace consists of an arm part (10) and of a electrode-clamping device and is produced so as to be current carrying from a material of high conductivity. Between the arm part and the electrode-clamping device there is a flanged connection consisting of flanged plates (11, 12) which limit a cooling-liquid cavity (20, 29) on both sides and which themselves contain passage orifices (21) for the cooling liquid from one cooling-liquid cavity to the other. This allows an effective cooling of the flanged plates and consequently a direct supply of current via the flanged connection when the carrier arm is produced from light metal.

  • Patent number: 5193398
Abstract: The invention relates to a measuring method to determine elongation after fracture on a tensile testpiece in a computer controlled tensile test. To meet the requirements of the tensile test to DIN EN 10002/1, the measuring grid known from DIN EN 10002/1 is applied to the tensile testpiece. The measuring grid is scanned with a line sensing camera. In the tensile test the elongation of the testpiece is determined when the tensile force has exceeded its maximum and drops to zero. That place for which the computer with the CCD camera detects the greatest distance between adjacent grid lines is utilized to calculate the elongation after fracture to DIN EN 10002/1.

  • Patent number: 5172750
Abstract: Installation for continuous casting between two rolls (1,2) having parallel axes and defining therebetween and with two fixed lateral walls (3) a casting space for a liquid metal, each lateral wall comprising at least one lateral part (6) placed against the planar end face of an adjacent one of the rolls and constituted by a portion of a disc having an outside diameter equal to that of the adjacent roll, and a part (12) which is central relative to and confronts the casting space and is composed of an insulating refractory material. The disc portion is made from a material having properties of thermal conductivity and mechanical resistance superior to those of the refractory material and is a frustoconical disc portion whose face having the larger radius of curvature is placed against the adjacent roll and the disc portion defines a frustoconical surface which is in contact with the insulating material of the central part.

  • Patent number: 5167750
Abstract: A heat sealing machine for imprinting garments and the like has a base (10) carrying a lower, horizontal platen (18) above which an upper heated platen may swing from an open, generally vertical position at the rear of the lower platen to a closed position superimposing the lower platen with the upper platen (24) being carried by lever arm (28) pivoted at (26) adjacent its rear end with over-center locking and force multiplying linkage (82, 84 and 96, 98) operatively connected by actuating links (90, 92) to a relatively movable handle mechanism (70) whereby as the handle is swung downwardly to close the upper platen, during the last increments of such closure, relative downward movement of the handle with respect to the platen causes the over-center and force multiplying linkage (82, 84 and 96, 98) to squeeze the upper platen against the lower platen. Threaded member (62) is provided for adjusting the pressure imposed by the upper platen.

  • Patent number: 5138560
Abstract: A position indicating apparatus for crane ways and overhead conveyors and the like includes a code carrier (11), which carries multi-value code marks (18) in one track along its length. The code marks (18) are combined into blocks (17), with which a block identification (22) is associated. Cooperating with the code carrier (11) and the block identification (22) are a code reader (12) and an auxiliary reader (24), respectively. Along the travel path, the code carrier (11) and the code reader (12) are disposed counter to one another. To enable increasing the length of the addressable travel paths without losing positional accuracy, or without having to increase the number of code marks (18) in one code word (35), a block identification (22) is associated with the blocks (17). From the block identification (22), an auxiliary reader (24) can recognize whether the code reader (12) is reading only code marks (18) from one block (17).

  • Patent number: 5098279
Abstract: A blow-molding machine having two calibrating stations located on both sides of a centrally arranged extrusion station, and including two closing systems, for one set of blow molds each, is equipped with finishing stations arranged along the longitudinal center plane of the blow-molding machine extending at a right angle to the transverse center plane thereof, for performing pinch-off removal, punching and testing operations, for example. The hollow bodies, which have been blown at the calibrating stations, are fed to the first finishing station in alternating succession by a swinging gripper capable of swinging altogether by 180.degree.. The swinging gripper includes a shell closing system arranged for being pivoted about the swinging axis of the swinging gripper and for being displaced radially relative to that axis. In addition, the shell closing system can be rotated by 180.degree..

  • Patent number: 5087328
Abstract: A gas jumper arrangement for a coke oven is composed of adjacently arranged coke oven chambers each having a gas opening with rims at the top portion thereof. The gas jumper arrangement overlaps gas openings of two adjacent coke oven chambers by one lid chamber each. The two lid chambers are connected in a duct-like manner by a gas jumper pipe and lids covering the gas openings during filling of a coke oven chamber are displaceable from an opened position into a closed position and settable into a rotational movement within the lid chambers by an actuation device. In order to ensure the tightness of the gas openings at the rims thereof even at larger pressure fluctuations and to enable the introduction of inert gas into the gas jumper arrangment, both the lid and the rim of each gas opening includes valve-face type sealing surfaces that mate with each other when pressed against each other in the closed position of the lid. A feed line for supplying an inert gas runs into the gas jumper arrangement.

  • Patent number: 5058659
Abstract: A process is provided for producing a steel bloom having a varying chemical composition in the cross-section. First, a flow of molten steel is directed into a casting chill form via a pouring pipe. Next, an alloy wire (e.g., sulphur foil, iron sulfite and other sulphur compounds) is introduced to the chill form. This alloy wire is melted in the molten steel from the upper surface of the molten steel to a maximum depth corresponding to the lower edge of the pouring pipe. The resulting steel bloom exhibits a substantially constant decreasing chemical composition in the cross-section from the outer to the center of the bloom and is easily regulated and reproduced.

  • Patent number: 5054964
Abstract: Stiffening elements are welded between the three rods (T1, T2, T3) of three-rod girders in uderground drift construction. Such stiffening elements consist of thee triangular wire polygons (10, 20, 30) connected to form one piece. Two of the polygons meet at the top rod (T3) to form a wire pyramid. The third wire polygon (30) is perpendicular to the plane determined by the axes of the lower rods (T1, T2). Since neither this third wire polygon (30) nor the adjacent polygon (10), which is one side of the pyramid, needs a cross-strut between the lower rods (T1, T2), a significant saving in materials combined with high resistance to bending is achieved.
