Patent number: 9281059Abstract: A semiconductor memory device including an array of memory cells (MC) formed on a substrate each realized from a load element and thyristor that define a switchable current path whose state represents a volatile bit value stored by the MC. At least one word line corresponding to a respective row of the array is formed on the substrate and coupled to MC current paths for the corresponding row. Bit lines corresponding to respective columns of the array are formed on the substrate and can be coupled to a modulation doped QW interface of the MC thyristors for the corresponding column. Circuitry is configured to apply an electrical signal to the word line(s) in order to generate current that programs phase change material of the MC load elements into one of a high or low resistive state according to state of the current path of the MCs for non-volatile backup purposes.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 2015Date of Patent: March 8, 2016Assignees: Opel Solar, Inc., The University of ConnecticutInventor: Geoff W. Patent number: 9278315Abstract: A photovoltaic-thermal (PV-T) system and a method of cooling photovoltaic (PV) cells in the system is described herein. Energy from an excitation source such as the sun hits the PV cells in the PV-T system causing heating that reduces PV efficiency. The PV cells are cooled by fluid in an intact heat-transfer system making a heated water byproduct while the PV cells release a form of energy. In addition, the PV-T system can be implemented in a desalination plant to harvest energy and heat for desalination processes. The present invention also includes methods for transferring heat from PV cells to the earth to improve PV performance and reduce thermal shock to the PV cells.Type: GrantFiled: October 11, 2011Date of Patent: March 8, 2016Assignee: Board of Regents, The University of Texas SystemInventors: Thomas A. Patent number: 9279160Abstract: MRSA CC398 is a clone of S. aureus that has recently emerged in pigs and other domestic animals worldwide. As any other MRSA, the clone displays high levels of antibiotic resistance and poses a serious threat to human health because of the risk of antibiotic treatment failure in human patients. We developed a new diagnostic test for identification of MRSA CC398 using a single one-step PCR that is very easily performed within a few hours. The test is based on the principle that clonal differences within S. aureus are reflected in the sequence of a gene (sau1hsdS1) located on the chromosome of this bacterial species. Accordingly, such a gene represents an optimal target for S. aureus and MRSA identification at the clone level. The test includes detection of the gene conferring methicillin resistance (mecA), therefore allowing rapid discrimination between methicillin-susceptible and methicillin-resistant variants of the clone.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 2010Date of Patent: March 8, 2016Assignees: Statens Serum Institut, The University of Copenhagen, St Georges Hospital Medical SchoolInventors: Marc Stegger, Luca Guardabassi, Jodi Lindsay

Patent number: 9282326Abstract: An interactive camera calibration tool is presented that provides live feedback on the state of the calibration and produces tightly-distributed calibration parameters even when used by novices. Target positions are suggested by the calibration tool. Once the target has been aligned with the target positions, image data of the target is captured and used to compute calibration parameters. This process is repeated until the computed parameters meet the accuracy requirements specified by the user. A novel calibration quality metric is also leveraged to automatically determine whether a calibration is sufficiently accurate.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 2014Date of Patent: March 8, 2016Assignee: The Regents Of The University Of MichiganInventors: Edwin B. Patent number: 9277148Abstract: A method, system and computer program product for improving the perceptual quality and naturalness of an image captured by an image acquisition device (e.g., digital camera). Statistical features of a scene being imaged by the image acquisition device are derived from models of natural images. These statistical features are measured and mapped onto the control parameters (e.g., exposure, ISO) of the digital acquisition device. By mapping these statistical features onto the control parameters, the perceptual quality and naturalness of the scene being imaged may be based on the values of these control parameters. As a result, these control parameters are modified to maximize the perceptual quality and naturalness of the scene being imaged. After modification of these control parameters, the image is captured by the image acquisition device. In this manner, the perceptual quality and naturalness of the image captured by the image acquisition device is improved.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 2013Date of Patent: March 1, 2016Assignee: Board of Regents, The University of Texas SystemInventors: Alan Bovik, Anush Moorthy
