Abstract: Enantioselective total syntheses of the anticancer isocarbostyril alkaloids (+)-7-deoxypancratistatin, (+)-pancratistatin, (+)-lycoricidine, and (+)-narciclasine are described. Our strategy for accessing this unique class of natural products is based on the development of a Ni-catalyzed dearomative trans-1,2-carboamination of benzene. The effectiveness of this dearomatization approach is notable, as only two additional olefin functionalizations are needed to construct the fully decorated aminocyclitol cores of these alkaloids. Installation of the lactam ring has been achieved through several pathways and a direct interconversion between natural products was established via a late-stage C-7 cupration. Using this synthetic blueprint, we were able to produce natural products on a gram scale and provide tailored analogs with improved activity, solubility, and metabolic stability.

Abstract: A method and device for visualizing a sample having a tissue section embedded in a solid material are provided. The method and device include applying an incident light to the tissue section embedded in the solid material. The tissue section embedded in the solid material is disposed on a layered structure configured to reduce optical back reflection at an interface between the tissue section embedded in the solid material and the layered structure. The incident light passes through the tissue section embedded in the solid material and the layered structure with reduced reflection at each of the interfaces such that visualizing one or more artifacts from reflecting the incident light from surfaces of the tissue section embedded in the solid material is reduced.

Abstract: A method of determining flow speed in a low pressure environment. The method includes obtaining bi-directional acoustic data from a plurality of transducer pairs as a fluid moves relative to the plurality of transducer pairs. The method further includes measuring phase lags corresponding to the bi-directional acoustic data, and determining bi-directional flight times using the phase lags. Additionally, the method includes calculating a flow speed of the fluid corresponding to each transducer pair from the bi-directional flight times. The method includes correcting for at least one of temperature effects, pressure effects, and wake effects, using a system model. The method further includes generating a report including the flow speed of the fluid.
Abstract: A passive MRI enhancing embodiment includes a plurality of resonators and increases signal-to-noise ratio of radiofrequency signals emitted by a specimen and captured by an MRI machine. The apparatus increases the magnetic field component of radiofrequency energy during signal transmission from the MRI machine to the specimen, and/or reception of signals from the specimen to the MRI machine. Use of the apparatus improves the images generated by the MRI machine, and/or reduces the time necessary for the MRI machine to capture the image. An isolator embodiment has a nonlinear resonator controllably configurable alternately into an isolation configuration and a transmission configuration, and a second resonator.

Abstract: This patent document provides a caged catalyst comprising a catalyst encapsulated in a cage compound of Formula I represented [ZrIV6O4(OI)4(linker)6]). The catalysts demonstrated excellent activities and size selectivity in a model RCM reaction, suggesting successful encapsulation into MOFs. ROMP of cyclopentene mediated by G3@UiO-67 achieved significantly higher molecular weight and lower dispersity than the counterpart mediated by the free catalyst. The ultra-high molecular weight polymers generated by the encapsulated catalysts demonstrated significantly improved mechanical and adhesive properties compared to the low molecular weight counterparts and commercial polymers. The simplicity and generality make this method readily applicable to the ROMP of a wide range of low-strain cyclic olefins.

Abstract: Indwelling body lumen expanders which allow for the maintenance and patency of a body lumen, such as the prostatic urethra to relieve urethral obstruction, are described. Because the one or more expanders are configured to be relatively larger in diameter than the diameter of the body lumen, the expanders may become invaginated into the lumen wall thus enabling the prostheses to avoid fluid exposure which in turn prevent the prostheses from becoming encrusted or calcified.
