Abstract: Disclosed herein is an all-in-one methodology for the fabrication and the programming of soft machines. Instead of relying on the assembly of individual parts, the disclosed approach harnesses interfacial flows in elastomers that progressively cure to robustly produce monolithic pneumatic actuators whose shape can easily be tailored to suit applications ranging from artificial muscles to grippers. Rationalized herein are the fluid mechanics at play in the assembly of the disclosed actuators and modeled herein are their subsequent morphing. This quantitative knowledge was leveraged to program these soft machines and produce complex functionalities, for example sequential motion obtained from a monotonic stimulus.

Abstract: In some embodiments, the present disclosure pertains to methods of detecting an analyte in a sample by associating the sample with an electrode that includes a metal-organic framework. After association, the redox properties of the electrode are evaluated. Thereafter, the presence or absence of the analyte in the sample is detected by correlating the redox properties of the electrode to the presence or absence of the analyte. In some embodiments, the present disclosure pertains to electrodes that include a metal-organic framework and an electrode surface. In particular embodiments of the present disclosure, the metal-organic framework is associated with the electrode surface. Additional embodiments of the present disclosure pertain to methods of making the electrodes of the present disclosure by associating a metal-organic framework with an electrode surface. In some embodiments, the methods of the present disclosure also include a step of mixing the metal-organic framework with a polymer.

Abstract: Various aspects of the present disclosure are directed toward methods and apparatuses for interacting a first liquid and a second liquid in one or more fluidic channels of a capillary structure. The methods and apparatuses can include providing at least one capillary barrier that positions a meniscus of the first liquid at a fluid-interface region using capillary forces within the capillary structure. Additionally, a path is provided along one of the channels for the second liquid to flow toward the fluid-interface region. Additionally, gas pressure is released, via a gas-outflow port, from the fluid-interface region while flow of the first liquid is arrested. Further, the first liquid and the second liquid contact in the fluid-interface region with the capillary barrier holding the first liquid at the fluid-interface region.

Abstract: Methods of pairing devices wirelessly that include matching received-signal-strength information regarding signal-strength patterns received by differing devices desired to be paired. In some embodiments, signal-strength patterns are based on a user moving an object so as to intentionally create multipath Fresnel-zone propagation disturbances. During pairing, the devices exchange their received-signal-strength information with one another and compare the received-signal-strength information that they receive from another device to the received-signal-strength information that they generated themselves based on the multipath Fresnel-zone propagation disturbances. When the two sets of receive-signal-strength information substantially match one another, the devices determine the presence of a trusted relationship. Methods for assisting with the wireless pairing are also disclosed.

Abstract: An exemplary random number generation system leverages the r includes at least one solar power panel of a solar power system, at least one sensor and a random number generator. The sensor senses one or more output parameters (e.g., voltage or current) from the solar power system and provides the sensed parameter to the random number generator, which uses the sensed parameter to generate a number that is truly random (i.e., is not deterministic). As an example, the random number generator may receive multiple samples of the measured parameter and generate a random number based on a difference of the multiple samples. If desired, the random number generator may include an algorithm to remove biasing in the random number.

Abstract: A method for photoacoustic imaging is performed by measuring RF time samples from transducer elements, and reconstructing an estimated initial pressure image from the measured RF time samples and a pre-calculated forward model matrix. The reconstructing involves minimizing the difference between the pre-calculated forward model matrix applied to the image estimate and the measured RF time samples by implementing a superiorized modified conjugate gradient least squares algorithm to minimize the total variation norm. The model matrix factors each of the transducer elements into sub-wavelength mathematical elements.
