  • Patent number: 7133682
Abstract: A mobile communication system performing communication between a plurality of base stations and a mobile station is provided. A user data signal is transmitted with the transmission power controlled from one base station selected among the plurality of base stations. Control data signals are transmitted from the plurality of base stations to the mobile station, with the transmission power controlled in a similar way as the user data signal. The mobile station measures quality of the control data signals on a basis of each base station, and selects a base station based on the measured control data signal quality of each base station.

  • Patent number: 7130600
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for facilitating personalization of a weather band radio that receives SAME messages broadcast by the NWR system. Alphanumeric indicators of locations are displayed upon a user display element. And, a listener of the radio enters, by way of a user input actuator, selection of selected geographical areas, identified by the alphanumeric indicators. The selected alphanumeric location is used to form a six-digit location code defined by the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS). And, the code so-formed is used by the weather band radio, selectably to alert weather anomalies broadcast by the NWR system within the selected geographical area of interest.

  • Patent number: 7127229
Abstract: The object of the present invention is to provide a cellular phone to be used for emergency reports that performs GPS positioning by means of remote control from an emergency report center, and transmits positional information to the emergency report center. The emergency report cellular phone according to the present invention is constituted such that when an emergency report switch thereof is depressed, a call request is made to the emergency report center. The emergency report center transmits a response signal with the result that a call link is formed between the emergency report cellular phone and the emergency report center. Following completion of the telephone call, the emergency report center transmits a position recalculation command message, by means of a DTMF signal.

  • Patent number: 7123943
Abstract: A method of forming directional antenna beams, comprising: directing at least two antenna beam signals by means of a beam formation matrix and pre-phasing pre-determined antenna beam signals formed with an antenna array in such a way that the signal of at least one antenna beam has a different phase compared with the signals of other antenna beams. The pre-phasing is implemented with a pre-phasing element, which comprises phasing coefficients in digital implementation. The pre-phasing element is implemented in such a way, for example, that the power of the sum signal of the antenna elements is evenly distributed to the different antenna elements in a pre-determined variation range.

  • Patent number: 7123911
Abstract: A method and system of wireless signal repeating. A wireless signal repeater may receive a group of signals and select signals to be amplified so as to produce amplified signals. The repeater may also select antenna elements to re-transmit the amplified signals. The repeater may further select areas to direct the elements' radiation patterns in order to provide extensive wireless service to desired areas. The repeater can perform any of these selection functions simultaneously and/or independently, and based on any desired criteria. For example, each signal received into the wireless signal repeater may carry an identifier. The repeater may perform the selection functions based at least in part on the identifiers of the signals.

  • Patent number: 7116998
Abstract: In a RAKE receiver delays associated with multipath signals are determined by subtracting power values associated with sidelobes of a peak value for each of the multipath signals. The determination can be performed in two stages, in the first stage the determination of the delays is made without accounting for a phase difference between adjacent multipath signals, while in the second stage the determinations are made accounting for the phase difference.

  • Patent number: 7116999
Abstract: In a mobile communication receiving apparatus in which signals received on a plurality of receiving paths (branches) are combined by a combiner, correlation between noise signals contained in the signals received on respective ones of the branches is detected by a noise correlation calculating unit, and control is exercised so as to maximize signal-to-noise power ratio of the combined signal based upon the correlation calculated in the noise correlation calculating unit. Signal-to-noise power ratio can be maximized even if noise components contained in respective ones of the branch signals are mutually correlated.

  • Patent number: 7103376
Abstract: When performing base station selection type transmission power control, transmission of the dedicated physical control channel signal by non-transmitting base stations is halted while minimizing the impact on uplink transmission power control. This decreases downlink interference and increases downlink channel capacity. At a base station, reception quality measuring unit 506 compares the measured uplink reception quality with a target quality, forms a TPC signal on the basis of the results of this comparison, and communicates the contents of this TPC signal to transmission power controller 507. When the base station in question is a non-transmitting base station, transmission power controller 507 transmits the dedicated physical control channel signal only if the contents of the communicated TPC signal instruct a decrease, and otherwise halts transmission of the dedicated physical control channel signal.

  • Patent number: 7099681
Abstract: This invention describes how combined session and resource tracking in a mobile node (MN) and/or basestation in a dynamic network resource environment can be used to control reactions to resource shortages. The session that is to experience a resource shortage is detected either by the MN, or communicated to the MN where session signaling is used to modify the session according to MN and basestation policy/configuration. The basestation can alternatively modify the session itself with all the session peers, on behalf of the MN. The specific new reaction to resource shortages that is then enabled is to place the session on hold such that the resources are freed, but so that the session state is maintained in the peers. This is preferable to dropping the session, as is generally the case in dynamic environments, if the likely period of resource loss is short and the session modifications require less overhead than restarting the session when the resources return after dropping the session.

  • Patent number: 7096039
Abstract: The present invention sets forth a methodology for providing improved downlink backhaul services from a radio network controller (RNC) to a plurality of base stations via a backhaul network that provides Ethernet services. The Ethernet services are provided by a group of provider edge (PE) switches and regular label switch routers (referred to as P switches). Base stations within the network are assigned into clusters, each of the clusters having a cluster ID. The RNC transmits packets to a given switch or switches out on the network based on a cluster ID included within the transmitted packet. The communications traffic is then multicast from at least one last hop switch in the network to candidate base stations on the basis of the cluster ID and an active set within the cluster. Advantageously, the clusters act as subgroups for more easily directing the transmission of the backhaul multicast traffic.

  • Patent number: 7096021
Abstract: The method according to the invention is intended to be applied in a situation where the power level of the signals transmitted by that mobile network to which the terminal is connected sink below predetermined threshold levels. Then the terminal is arranged to measure the power levels of signals transmitted by the base stations of at least one second system. The method according to the invention comprises advantageously steps in which the cellular radio system at first transmits to the terminal at least one threshold value. Then the terminal measures the strength of the signal transmitted by at least one base station and compares the measured signal strength with said threshold value. If the signal strength of the received signal is lower than said threshold value the transmission mode is changed to a mode where the measurement of the signals of a second system can be performed.

  • Patent number: 7092737
Abstract: A method and system transmits a stream of data symbols in a multiple-input/multiple-output wireless communications system that includes M pairs of transmitting antennas. The stream of data symbols are demultiplexed into M sub-streams and adaptively modulated and coded to a maximum data rate while achieving a predetermine performance on an associated channel used to transmit the sub-stream. Space-time transmit diversity encoding is applied to each coded sub-stream to generate two output streams, one output stream for each antenna.

  • Patent number: 7089039
Abstract: A method is provided for beam shaping in a radio communication system having subscriber stations and a base station, and an antenna device with a number of antenna elements that emit a downlink signal weighted with a coefficient of an actual weighting vector to a subscriber station, the actual weighting vector being updated via feedback information from the subscriber station. The subscriber station estimates the direction of a control vector in an M-dimensional vector space using measurements of the downlink signals, it detects a deviation of the estimated direction from the direction of a reference control vector and transmits information representative of the deviation to the base station. The base station then adapts the weighting vector using the representative information.
