  • Publication number: 20030177413
Abstract: Versioning may be utilized in a knowledge base decision tree in order to provide several useful features. To accomplish this, when a decision tree is traversed, the decision tree representing a knowledge base and having non-leaf nodes with one or more branches representing possible symptoms, and leaf nodes with no branches, branches may be followed corresponding to symptoms experience by the application until a leaf node is reached. This traversal may be recorded as a version, with subsequent traversals having a different version. This allows a user to rerun performance tuning either from the beginning or from an earlier node without having to re-enter information already provided. It also allows a user to resume the performance tuning should he be interrupted in the middle, such as by a crash or by having to halt a long traversal.

Abstract: A latching microregulator for regulating liquid flow on micro-scale levels comprises a substrate having an inlet port and an outlet port, a valve element defining a valve chamber for opening and closing the inlet port, and an actuator assembly for actuating the valve element. The valve chamber is configured to contain a volume of fluid, and the inlet port and the outlet port are in fluid communication with the valve chamber to provide a liquid flow path through the chamber. The actuator assembly comprises a cantilever beam for moving the valve element between an open position and a closed position, an actuator, such as a piezoelectric element, for moving the cantilever beam, and a latch, such as a permanent magnet, for securing the cantilever beam in the closed position. A flow regulation system comprises a plurality of fluid channels of varied flow conductance and a plurality of latching microregulators for selectively blocking or allowing flow through each of the fluid channels.

  • Publication number: 20030177417
Abstract: A server has a memory and an analyzer. The memory stores a library of symptom descriptions, a library of corresponding diagnoses, a library of corresponding remedies, and a library of corresponding probes. The analyzer is coupled to the memory and has an identifier, a comparator, and a reiterater. The identifier identifies at least one symptom of an application to be probed based on an input. That input can either be a user input describing the symptoms of the application or symptoms previously already identified. The comparator compares the symptoms of the application with the library of symptom descriptions. The reiterator reiteravely operates the identifier on the comparator until the symptoms correspond with a diagnosis from the library of corresponding diagnoses.

  • Patent number: 6619780
Abstract: A method for servicing a printhead of an inkjet printing mechanism is provided. Firstly, a plurality of time difference information is collected by the printing mechanism. Each time difference information represents a period of time passed between end of a last print job and receipt of a succeeding print job. The print jobs are sent from a computer connected to the printing mechanism. Subsequently, the printing mechanism uses the plurality of time difference information to determine a nominal time information representing an amount of time. After the determination of the nominal time information, the printing mechanism periodically performs a first level servicing dependent upon the nominal time information.

  • Publication number: 20030160090
Abstract: A paper assembly is formed having an envelope and a carrier portion, such that the overall assembly is a generally flat paper assembly having a length and width of a standard paper size such as 8½ in.×11 in. or A-4 size. The assembly, having a footprint equal to a standard paper size, may be fed into a standard size paper tray of a printer such as a laser printer or an ink jet printer, with the printer printing on the front face of the envelop. After printing the envelope may be stuffed with material to be mailed, and the envelope separated from the carrier portion and sealed for mailing. In a first embodiment the carrier is an L-shaped piece of paper that is formed separately from the envelope and releasably adhered to the backside thereof, the L-cut having an acute angle and a rounded corner. In another embodiment the L-shaped carrier is releasably adhered to the front side of the envelope.

  • Publication number: 20030152216
Abstract: An active noise attenuation system includes a speaker, and a microphone. The microphone detects a combination of sound from the speaker and noise in the system. The resulting noise is compared with a reference signal. The reference signal is a desired signal for the system. The combination of the reference signal and the desired signal results in a correction signal. The system of this invention includes first and second reference signal generation paths. A first path generates a signal according to a multiplier and a digital model the system. The second path generates an absolute sound pressure level according to engine rpm. The absolute sound pressure level provides a reference signal for shaping sound at orders of inconsistent or undetectable engine sound.

  • Publication number: 20030149881
Abstract: A method for communicating confidential data over a computer network, such as the Internet includes encrypting the confidential data while the confidential data is in the control of a sender. The step of encrypting includes mixing the confidential data with biometric data to produce encrypted data. The encrypted data is then sent over a communication link to a receiver. The encrypted data is de-encrypted while the encrypted data is in the control of the receiver by separating the biometric data from the confidential data. Voice signatures are convenient forms of biometric data and may be used for the dual purpose of encrypting the data to be sent and serving as a key to be matched by the second entity to gain access to the data, i.e., to allow de-encryption. The further step of converting the encrypted data from a first format to a second format, e.g., wave file format, may provide additional security and requires the reconversion by the second entity in order to de-encrypt.

  • Publication number: 20030147088
Abstract: A method for deriving a reverse model look-up table whose entries represent device dependent colors as a function of device independent colors, based on a forward model look-up table whose entries represent device independent colors obtained in response to printout of corresponding device dependent colors. For each device independent target color, a binary search of the forward model look-up table is performed so as to locate a cell that contains the device independent target color. The grid points from the forward model look-up table that define the cell are interpolated so as to obtain device dependent colors corresponding to the device independent target color. The device dependent color is stored at the grid point for the reverse model look-up table at a position corresponding to the device independent target color.

  • Patent number: 6597700
Abstract: A distributed address database management technique involves maintaining an address database by each of a number of interconnected modules. Each module maintains a number of locally owned address entries and a number of remotely owned address entries in the address database. Each module monitors the status of its locally owned address entries, maintains the locally owned address entries based upon the status, and provides the status to the other interconnected modules. Each module maintains the remotely owned address entries based upon the status received from the other interconnected modules. When a module adds a locally owned address entry to its address database, the module notifies the other interconnected modules, which in turn add a corresponding remotely owned address entry to their respective address databases.

  • Publication number: 20030135813
Abstract: In one embodiment of the invention, during add-compare-select computations, the output of the adders is guaranteed to be a positive value because the only time normalization logic subtracts a normalization amount is when all accumulators are greater than the normalization amount. As such, the detection of overflow is greatly simplified. Overflow in the add-compare-select unit may be indicated simply by the value of the most significant bit (“MSB”) (i.e., the sign bit) of the result. If the MSB of the result of the adder is set then, in one embodiment, the output of the adder gets forced the maximum possible value given the number of bits. For example, this value will be forced to 7h7f if the value is represented by 7-bits. That is to say, if an overflow is detected, then the accumulator is saturated to the maximum value.
