Publication number: 20080170981Abstract: A grown single crystal diamond is polished using a non contact polishing technique, which leaves a residue on the diamond surface. In one embodiment, a wet chemical etch is performed to remove the residue, leaving a highly polished single crystal diamond surface. In a further embodiment, a colloidal silica solution is used in combination with rotating polishing pads to remove the residue. Both residue removing techniques may be used in further embodiments.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 17, 2007Publication date: July 17, 2008Inventors: Alfred R. Genis, William W. Publication number: 20080170982Abstract: The present invention is directed to methods of making nanofiber yarns. In some embodiments, the nanotube yarns comprise carbon nanotubes. Particularly, such carbon nanotube yarns of the present invention provide unique properties and property combinations such as extreme toughness, resistance to failure at knots, high electrical and thermal conductivities, high absorption of energy that occurs reversibly, up to 13% strain-to-failure compared with the few percent strain-to-failure of other fibers with similar toughness, very high resistance to creep, retention of strength even when heated in air at 450° C. for one hour, and very high radiation and UV resistance, even when irradiated in air.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 9, 2005Publication date: July 17, 2008Applicant: BOARD OF REGENTS, THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS SYSTEMInventors: Mei Zhang, Shaoli Fang, Ray H. Publication number: 20080170983Abstract: A process for producing carbon nanotubes includes carbon plasma generation with microwave energy, plasma stabilization, and product deposition. Stabilization homogenizes the plasma energy density and concentration, leading to a more efficient reactor. A transition metal catalyst and associated catalyst support are used to form the end product. The formation region may have variations of geometry and supporting equipment that will affect the rate and purity of production. The formation region is immediately downstream from the plasma stabilization region such that the apparatus may be mounted on a robotic arm for direct deposition of product.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 6, 2007Publication date: July 17, 2008Inventor: Slade H. Publication number: 20080170984Abstract: The present invention provides a process for obtaining fullerene-like metal chalcogenide nanospheres, comprising: (a) feeding a metal halide, metal carbonyl, organo-metallic compound or metal oxyhalide vapor into a reacting chamber towards a reacting zone to interact with a flow of at least one chalcogen material in gas phase, the temperature conditions in said reacting zone being such enabling the immediate formation of spherical nucleation seeds of the product; (b) controllably varying the flow of said metal halide, metal carbonyl, organo-metallic compound or metal oxyhalide vapor into said reacting chamber thereby controlling the amount, morphology and size of the so-produced nanospheres, to obtain substantially non-hollow fullerene-like metal calcogenide nanospheres in solid form. The present invention further provides novel IF metal chalcogenides with substantially non-hollow, spherical shape, and having excellent tribological behaviour.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 6, 2006Publication date: July 17, 2008Inventors: Reshef Tenne, Alexander Margolin, Ronit Popovitz-Biro, Lev Rapoport

Publication number: 20080170985Abstract: A method for producing hydrogen peroxide by an anthraquinone process includes the steps of: reducing with hydrogen a working solution containing an organic solvent and anthraquinone in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst; and activating the hydrogenation catalyst when a hydrogenation selectivity has decreased due to repeated use, wherein the catalyst activation step includes a step of treating the hydrogenation catalyst with a first alkaline aqueous solution of pH 10 or above containing an alkali metal, and then washing the treated hydrogenation catalyst with water or a second alkaline aqueous solution that is more weakly alkaline than the first alkaline aqueous solution so as to set a catalyst soak solution comprising 5 parts by weight of pure water in admixture with 1 part by weight of the activated hydrogenation catalyst to a pH of 8.0 or above.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 27, 2007Publication date: July 17, 2008Inventors: Hiroshi Hasegawa, Katsuhiro Iura, Isao Hagiwara, Shinjiro Sawamoto

Publication number: 20080170987Abstract: A series of crystalline layered and microporous compositions have been prepared. Compositions that have a layered structure and are identified as UZM-13, UZM-17 and UZM-19. Upon calcination at a temperature of about 400° C. to about 600° C., these compositions form a microporous crystalline zeolite with a three dimensional framework which has been identified as UZM-25. Publication number: 20080170988Abstract: The technological plan of preparing approach of galactosized algin-polylysine nanoparticle is: synthesize galactosized polylysine by hydrogenization of amine, to apply “finished gelatin of Wharton” to synthesize galactosized algin-polylysine nano gelatin of Wharton: dissolve algin and Calcium chloride in the water respectively, with the magnetic agitation of algin solution, add Calcium chloride solution and galactosized polylysine in turn, standing overnight at ordinary temperature, then get the galactosized algin-polylysine nanoparticle suspl. Nanoparticle suspl. is purified by SephadexG-25. Purified output is dehydrated in vacuum.
