Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the surface modification of titanium dioxide pigment and to its use, particularly in coatings, for interior and exterior walls (emulsion paints) and in water-borne paint systems. The method for surface modification is based on a titanium dioxide pigment that has been provided with a fluffily structured surface coating and where the fluffily structure of the surface coating is at least partially compacted, preferably by exposing the pigment particles to high shear and impact forces. The pigment particles are preferably coated with silicon oxide and/or aluminium oxide. The method according to the invention preferably reduces the specific surface area (BET) by roughly 30%. The pigment according to the invention can be used to optimise the rheological properties and the open time of the paint.

  • Patent number: 8114376
Abstract: The manufacture of titanium dioxide by oxidation of titanium tetrachloride in a multistage method, where both oxygen and titanium tetrachloride are added in several stages. In the first stage gaseous TiCl4 is introduced into a preheated oxygen-containing gaseous stream in a stoichiometric or hyper-stoichiometric amount to produce a TiO2 containing gas suspension. In the second or further stages liquid TiCl4 and oxygen-containing gas is introduced into the TiO2 containing gas suspension to produce further TiO2.

Abstract: The present invention relates to novel pigment mixtures comprising at least two different particulate components A and B. The first component A comprises titanium suboxide(s), a titanium oxynitride or a titanium nitride species. Component B particle comprises inorganic, or organic pigments. The titanium suboxide particles display a bluish metallic luster, are new and form a further aspect of the present invention. When combined with particles from component B such as variously coated micas, for example, the bluish or bluish/black metallic color effect from component A leads to special color effects in the various mixtures.

  • Patent number: 8097183
Abstract: A liquid pigment dispersion is disclosed. The dispersion comprises a pigment dispersed in a blend of two or more active hydrogen-containing materials that together have a freezing point that is room temperature or below. The pigment remains dispersed in the blend, even if the dispersion is subjected to freezing and thawing. A curative blend comprising at least two active hydrogen-containing materials, which is liquid at room temperature, is also disclosed. The dispersions and curative blends of the present invention can be solvent-free. Resins and prepolymers comprising the curative blends of the invention, either pigmented or unpigmented, are also disclosed.
