  • Publication number: 20020094384
Abstract: Continuous void-free uniform coatings are formed on substrates by repeatedly contacting the substrate at a first position with wetted surface portions of at least two rotating wire-wound coating rods and re-contacting the substrate with such wetted surface portions at a different position or positions on the substrate. The coating is repeatedly picked up from and placed onto the substrate and made more uniform. Extremely uniform and extremely thin coatings can be quickly and easily obtained using low cost equipment.

  • Patent number: 6117284
Abstract: A dual-layer DVD disc that does not require a stamping step (typically, as part of the 2P prior art manufacturing process) during its manufacture. A polycarbonate substrate is molded and coated with a semireflective data layer in the usual way. A PMMA substrate is molded and coated with a fully reflective data layer. Adhesive is placed on the semireflective data layer, and the fully reflective data layer is transferred from its PMMA substrate to the polycarbonate substrate. The polycarbonate substrate thus ends up with two data layers in conformance with the DVD specifications, and the PMMA substrate can even be recycled for another use.

  • Patent number: 5476546
Abstract: An apparatus for applying a liquid lubricant in a pattern to a face of a sheet workpiece has a support frame through which the workpiece is transported in a travel direction substantially parallel to its face, a plurality of axles in the frame extending along respective axes generally perpendicular to the direction and individually displaceable generally perpendicular to the direction and to the respective axes, and respective liquid-pervious rollers journaled on the axles about the respective axes. A liquid lubricant is fed to the rollers and respective actuators connected between the axles and the frame displace the respective rollers perpendicular to the direction and to the respective axes into and out of contact with the workpiece as same passes in the direction through the frame. A controller connected to the actuators individually controls and operates same to apply the liquid lubricant in the rollers to the workpiece in a predetermined pattern as the workpiece passes through the frame.

  • Patent number: 5443638
Abstract: A device for generating a subatmospheric pressure at a coating layer on a web-shaped carrier material which is guided over a coating roll. The device is provided with a pressure chamber which is pressurized symmetrically with compressed air via two end-face inflow openings. The compressed air is fed symmetrically to the inflow openings via a manifold unit. From the pressure chamber, the compressed air emerges via a so-called Laval nozzle, thereby generating in a region above the nozzle a subatmospheric pressure which acts on the meniscus of the coating layer during the transition from the gap of the coating die onto the carrier material. Movable seals are provided to permit the width of the nozzle to be adapted to the coating width of the carrier material.

  • Patent number: 4862827
Abstract: Apparatus for applying a coating to semiconductor chips mounted within apertures in a dielectric film. The film containing the semiconductor chips and input-output connectors is fed from a reel past an applicator for applying the coating on one side of the chips. After passing through a curing chamber, the film passes about a substantially square sprocket so as to reverse the direction of travel. The sprocket is of such a dimension that the film bends on a line between each individual chip or a selected group of chips. The strip then passes by another applicator for coating the other side of the chips. After passing through the curing chamber, including a substantially square sprocket, the film is wound on a driven sprocket. The coating may be a silicone composition, an epoxy resin, or a urethane composition.

  • Patent number: 4512840
Abstract: A machine for assembling wood flooring intermittently advances rows of wood fillets lengthwise along side-by-side paths. Glue is applied to opposed longitudinal sides of the fillets in adjacent rows, and a strip of compressible material is inserted between the glue-bearing fillet surfaces. The rows converge and the fillets are pressed together to join the fillets and the cushion material. The pressing preferably occurs at a station where glue is simultaneously applied to other rows of fillets. Each glue applicator has an outwardly-directed face for applying glue to the fillets as they slide by the face, and the face is apertured with a recess which contains glue supplied from a pressured source.

  • Patent number: 4470789
Abstract: An extruder for delivering foamed glue from a foamer selectively to a plurality of spaced apart outlet orifices for extrusion onto a substrate surface and to bypass passageways for diverting the foamed glue to a defoamer for subsequent return to the foamer, is formed of three elongated flat blocks secured together releasably in face-abutting relationship. The surfaces of the outer, inlet and bypass blocks facing the center coupling block are recessed to provide a plurality of passageways all of which extend substantially equal distances from inlet and bypass ports in the inlet and bypass blocks, respectively, to a plurality of coupling ports in the coupling block. An air pressure operated selector valve in the bypass block is operable to communicate the coupling ports selectively with the bypass passageways for bypassing foamed glue to the defoamer and with the outlet orifices for extruding foamed onto a substrate surface.
