  • Patent number: 6186200
Abstract: A method of manufacturing tiles from waste wood uses round crosscut wood slices, a binder, and a filler. The slices, all generally of a thickness, are placed on the flat bottom of a die within side walls. Adhesive is applied to the slices and the die is filled with a mixture of the binder and the filler. The die contents are hot pressed to achieve the required tile thickness. The tile is ejected from the die and then maintained at room temperature for not more than 72 hours. The face side of the tile is ground and the dimensions of the tile are brought within the required tolerances.

  • Patent number: 6148883
Abstract: Door frames, window frames, baseboards, corner mouldings, etc are trimmed with solid wood, eg oak, trim pieces. The trim pieces are fitted over splines which are screwed to the wall. A jig enables the splines to be located accurately in position. The spline includes no beads, snaps, or other features that would require the oak trim section to flex; instead, the trim is secured by the friction arising from the fit of the spline into a groove cut into the rear face of the trim section. In a variation, a pair of parallel grooves are provided, together with a corresponding pair of splines, which are mounted on a web.

  • Patent number: 6142199
Abstract: A machine trims the ends of decorative molding to match the contour of the face of the molding. The machine comprises a frame that supports a die. The die has an opening therethrough with a die profile that is reversely arranged in comparison with the molding face contour. A punch with a profile that is identical to the molding face contour is reciprocated into and out of engagement with the die. In a first position, the punch is out of engagement with the die such that the end of a piece of molding can be placed between the punch and the die. The punch is actuated to reciprocate into engagement with the die and shear the molding. The punch has a three-dimensional cutting edge with a point between the punch ends. The point contacts the molding first. From the point, the punch cutting edge shears the molding progressively across the molding toward the punch ends.

  • Patent number: 6112786
Abstract: When scarfing the end portion of a plate-like material with irregular deformations or undulations, such as distortions, undulations and warps, the undulations are successively corrected flat and the flattened end portion is scarfed by a rotary cutter to form a highly precise scarfed surface. When the end portion of the plate-like material 3 is scarfed by the rotary cutter 5, the pressing member 11 presses, while the cutting operation proceeds, at least a part of the surface of at least that portion of the plate-like material 3 which is to be cut away as a chip 17 at a position near the blades 5b of the rotary cutter 5 on a downstream side of the rotary cutter with respect to a rotary cutter movement direction, the surface of the plate-like material 3 pressed by the pressing member 11 being opposite the other surface held in contact with the cutter receiving table 7.

  • Patent number: 6058589
Abstract: The automatic pallet collar apparatus comprises a frame that has a fixed rail and a movable rail to adjust the width of the frame. A rotatable driving member is in operative engagement with the frame to move forward a set of wood members. A downstream cutting station cut the wood members into a precise length. The drilling station drills holes into the wood member and rivets are dropped into the holes at the rivet mounting station. A downstream turner station turns each wood member downside up and a hinge is positioned onto the rivets at the hinge mounting station. The rivets are then fastened to firm hold the hinge to the wood member. A suitable logo may be printed in the screen printing station and the finished pallet collar components are then stacked at the stacker station.

  • Patent number: 5927359
Abstract: A system and method is designed to recover and recycle waste lumber wood scrap products from construction sites and process this waste scrap lumber into lengths of recycled, usable lumber. The system processes "2.times.4" and to "2.times.6" lumber scraps from one or more construction sites and processes such material into recycled construction material in the form of finger jointed "2.times.4" and "2.times.6" lumber. The method and system accepts and utilizes random lengths of different species with different moisture contents. After the construction waste wood scrap products are delivered to a recovery site, unusable wood scrap products are removed. The usable products are processed by squaring the ends and cutting out defects; and the "2.times.4" sizes are separated from the "2.times.6" sizes.

  • Patent number: 5853037
Abstract: A furniture design and manufacturing system utilizing initial selection of a design "vocabulary" of rectilinear cross-sectional shape "beams" that integrate structural and aesthetic considerations, and utilizing panels coordinated in thickness to be received in dados and rabbets in the beams. Beam cross sections generally have a predetermined incremental size difference, or multiple of the incremental size difference, so that beams inter-fit and cooperate with panels and other beams in a graduated manner permitting a sort of "nesting" when beams, or panels and beams, are used together. This facilitates joinery in furniture using such components because, among other reasons, mortises tend to fall in thicker components than those having tenons. Production of beam stock and, if desired, panel production precedes identification of a furniture item to be produced, facilitating economies in production.

  • Patent number: 5636428
Abstract: A blade arrangement for cutting dados that includes magnetic dado spacers, which firmly adhere through magnetic attraction to the dado blades, is disclosed. Also, with the blade arrangement of the present invention, problems due to blade vibrations are reduced. The cutting width is conveniently measured and adjusted without having to repeatedly install and remove the nut, since the magnetic dado spacers hold adjacent blades firmly together, before they are tightened. Additionally, the use of magnetic dado spacers reduces the possibility of the spacers falling into and becoming caught in the thread of an arbor. A further advantage is that the magnetic dado spacers are much quicker and easier to install than prior art dado spacers.

  • Patent number: 5562956
Abstract: Processes are provided for producing wood chips with a variety of cross sections such as those resembling botanical leaves and other decorative designs. The processes also produces wood chips that have coloration and shading. A rough form of wood having a elongated length is extruded lengthwise to make an extrusion having a decorative cross section. The extrusion is then cut at an angle to the direction of the elongated length of the extrusion into a plurality of wood chips having the desired cross-section. The step of cutting the extrusion involves positioning a lengthwise end of the extrusion adjacent at least one cutting blade oriented at an angle in the range of about 15 degrees to about 75 degrees relative to the elongated length of the extrusion, providing a relative rotational movement between the extrusion and the blade about the longitudinal center of gravity of the extrusion, and providing a relative linear movement between the extrusion and the blade in the elongated direction towards one another.

  • Patent number: 5537728
Abstract: A magnetic dado shim is a disc cut from highly flexible magnetic sheeting, and includes a central arbor hole. When the magnetic dado shim is placed concentrically on a steel dado blade, it sticks securely thereto, and will not easily shim in position. Therefore, the magnetic dado shim will not fall into the thread of an arbor and become damaged when the dado set is tightened thereon. Accordingly, the magnetic dado shim is very easy to install.
