Checks And Closers Patents (Class 16/49)
  • Patent number: 5507070
Abstract: A mechanism for controlling the opening and closing of a closure object, comprising an outer cylinder whose inner chamber, contains hydraulic fluid, a distal end of the outer cylinder being attachable to either a closure object or an object to be closed. A circumferential single groove is located in an inner wall of the outer cylinder and a piston shaft telescopically received within the outer cylinder extends proximally therefrom, being attachable to either a closure object or an object to be closed, and distally into the inner chamber. A piston head is mounted distally on the piston shaft. The piston head contains a bore therethrough, a peripherally located circumferential retaining groove, and an inclined outer surface which increases in cross section in the distal direction. A seal prevents hydraulic fluid from passing around the piston head between the distal chamber and the proximal chamber. A snap ring, partially housed within the single groove, engages the inclined outer surface of the piston head.

  • Patent number: 5251402
Abstract: A self return mechanism for automatically closing or opening a closure, preferably having a movable door supported during movement by a door frame, the door having a braking element mounted to the top edge of the door, and a door return element. The door return element has one end coupled to the door frame structure and its other end coupled to the door and has an intermediate segment oriented to pass through the braking element and around a portion of the grooved circumference of a pulley wheel. The door return element is preferably an elastic element having an outer dimension that changes as the door moves from an opened position to a closed position. The self return mechanism controls the acceleration and deceleration of the door as it is automatically closed, returns the sliding door to its closed position when it is opened only partially, allows for easy removal and replacement of the door from the door frame structure and is inexpensive to manufacture and simple to assemble.

  • Patent number: 5075923
Abstract: A door positioning device comprising a housing concealed in a door jamb and a mechanism mounted in the housing for holding the door open in one or more selected positions. The mechanism comprises a cylinder mounted in the housing wherein a slidable piston is mounted. Linkage connects the piston to linkage mounted onto the door, in such a way that when the door opens, the linkage forces the piston upward in the cylinder. A shaft integral with the piston depends from the piston and is moveable with it. The shaft has a plurality of vertically spaced roller receiving recesses formed thereon. The housing has a movably mounted roller biased toward the shaft so as the door opens, the shaft moves upward in the cylinder until the roller moves into one of the vertically spaced recesses whereby the door is held open at a selected position. In this way when a slight pressure is exerted on the door it overcomes bias holding the roller in a recess formed in the shaft, allowing the door to close.

Abstract: In a door closing device for an upper lock a bar structure is provided for interconnecting a shaft of the door upper lock with a door wing. The bar structure includes a main arm and an adjusting arm pivotally connected to the adjusting arm. The adjusting arm is comprised of telescopically displaceable outer and inner bars which can be locked in position by a locking member. The locked position of the bars relative to each other is secured by a slidable tube surrounding the outer bar and securable to the inner bar.

  • Patent number: 4536916
Abstract: A door closing apparatus is described which embraces a unit for generating a closing force, a lever attached thereto via a releasable clutch for actuating the door and a controllable blocking device. The releasable clutch consists of a threaded connection which permits relative rotation between the actuating lever and the drive axle over a predetermined stroke. An abutment for frictionally locking the actuating lever is provided, with the frictional locking abutment becoming effective relative to the actuating lever at at least one end of the stroke. The holding force which sets in between the actuating lever and the frictional locking abutment is smaller than the holding force of the blocking device which blocks the unit for generating the closing force in the closing direction.

  • Patent number: 4378612
Abstract: A delayed action door closer that delays a portion of the closing of a door for an adjustably determined period of time after the door has been moved to its fully open position. An interdependent hydraulic speed control system utilizes a delayed action speed control regulating valve which controls the closing speed of the door in the delayed action zone only, and whose speed cannot be adjusted faster than the main closing speed, but can be adjusted to provide a desired delay time prior to the door closing under normal regulation. The placement of the interdependent hydraulic system in the checking end of the closer allows the closer to have a fully adjustable independent backcheck.

  • Patent number: 4160304
Abstract: An accessory for use with a conventional door closer having a body for mounting on a hinged door or the door jamb and a spring biased rotatable shaft constantly urging the door toward a closed position. The accessory comprises a first member having a reaction plate fixed with respect to the door closer body, a second member, such as an externally splined ring, fixed with respect to the door closer shaft, and a member, such as a flanged collar, rotatably interconnecting the first and second members. The collar is threaded into a hole in the reaction plate, and has an internally splined hole accommodating and meshing with the splined ring. The force of frictional engagement between the flange and the reaction plate progressively increases as the door is opened, and at an adjustable predetermined open position of the door the frictional resistance between the flange and reaction plate is stronger than the closing force of the door closer, so that the door is held open.

  • Patent number: 4130913
Abstract: A door closer used with a door frame and a door panel has a hold-open device for holding the closer in any full or intermediate door-open position. The door panel is free for some manual operation independently of the closer because of a lost-motion, rotary connection between the door frame and door panel. This involves a closer shaft having a thread therein or thereon engaged by a threaded member on the closer arm so that when the member and shaft rotate relative to each other, there is also relative axial translation between them. When the hold-open device is released from some set open position after some manual, door panel closing motion, the shaft revolves, causing some originally abutting but separated facing surfaces on the member and the shaft axially to approach each other and finally and again to abut, thus taking out the lost motion and causing the closer to move the door panel from substantially fully open or any intermediate open position into fully closed position.
