Muffler, Fluid Conducting Type Patents (Class 181/212)
  • Patent number: 7694778
Abstract: An exhaust gas exhausted from a fuel cell is sent to a silencer through an exhaust pipe. The silencer is provided with a conductive noise absorbing material, and is fixed to a vehicle body through a metallic fixing jig. Thus, the noise absorbing material is earthed to the vehicle body so that it is possible to prevent static electricity from being generated in the use of the fuel cell vehicle such as in a low humidity environment.

Abstract: A device for influencing an exhaust gas flow, in particular for controlling the sound emission in an exhaust branch of an engine, includes a closure member that is movably arranged in the exhaust gas flow. For example, the closure member comprises a flap driven by a motor to move the closure member in the exhaust gas flow. It is thus optionally possible to produce or influence pressure pulsations in the exhaust gas which lead to an audible sound emission. The device according to the invention provides for a so-called “sound design” of a combustion engine. The driving device (the drive motor and a force transmission member to the closure member) is equipped with an active cooling system.

Abstract: The present invention provides an exhaust chamber system, comprising a stationary propeller type blade assembly with a nose cone within or adjacent to an expansion chamber, to create a vortex that swirls exhaust gas towards the outlet. The resultant vacuum within the exhaust chamber aids in scavenging an internal combustion engines exhaust gases, and in reducing system back pressure The exhaust chamber maintains the sound level of the exhaust within acceptable limits, while delivering improved horsepower, torque, and/or fuel efficiency over standard and other performance mufflers.

Abstract: A muffler including an outer shell; an end plate that is laser-welded to the outer shell; a sheathing member that is provided on the outer side of the outer shell to sheath the outer shell with the sheathing member; and a shielding portion that prevents liquid from entering into the sheathing member through a clearance formed between the outer shell and the end portion of the sheathing member, at which the sheathing member is connected to the outer shell. Providing such shielding portion makes it possible to prevent liquid such as water from entering into the sheathing member through the clearance, because the shielding portion blocks such liquid. As a result, inconvenience due to entry of the liquid into the space is prevented, and connection between the sheathing member and the outer shell is secured.

Abstract: An exhaust deflector is attachable to a muffler. The exhaust deflector includes a single-piece housing having a flange that defines an inlet aperture, an outlet wall that defines an outlet aperture, and an intermediate wall that interconnects the flange and the outlet wall. A mesh is in contact with the flange and is positioned to cover the inlet aperture. A perforated member is sandwiched between the mesh and the intermediate wall such that the perforated member and the intermediate wall cooperate to define a space. A low-density material is disposed within the space.

Abstract: An improved muffler diffuser insert adapted to be used with, and mounted within, an exhaust muffler for effectively helping to reduce noise and back pressure attendant to engine operation. The diffuser comprises a cap end for abutting against an exhaust end of the muffler when the muffler diffuser is mounted within the muffler, which has at least one exhaust opening defined therein for cooperation with the exhaust end of the muffler so as to permit an exhaust flow from the exhaust end of the muffler to pass through. A body portion is connected to the cap end, and defines therein an elongated opening for permitting the exhaust flow from the muffler to pass through. A distal end of the body portion comprises an outermost end and two sound deflection portions positioned on either side of the outermost end for use in deflecting sound waves contained in the exhaust flow so as to enhance noise diffusion.

Abstract: A dosing device is provided that is suitable for administering a reagent into an exhaust chamber of an internal combustion engine. The device comprises a nozzle body and an insulating jacket wherein the jacket is mounted to the nozzle body at one or more mounting points, and wherein the dosing device is adapted to engage with a port located in the wall of an exhaust chamber. The insulating jacket defines a compartment, which can comprise an insulating material or can be substantially evacuated. The dosing device of the invention is advantageously insulated from the elevated temperatures in the surrounding environment, thereby allowing for the reagent to be maintained at an optimal working temperature range.
