Abstract: A brake cable-connecting apparatus for a drum brake, having a simplified structure and designed to permit a cable end to be steadily seated on a brake lever, thereby providing improved durability of an inner cable, and to further positively holds a brake cable in position, which otherwise would be disengaged from the brake lever. A drum brake comprises: slanted surfaces 27c, 28c for permitting an inner cable 29a to be deflected while a cable end 29b of a brake cable 29 is slid along an outer edge of a free end 26a of a brake lever 26, the cable end 29b being advanced from a direction in which the brake cable 29 is pulled, to a opposite direction in which the brake cable 29 is pulled; and, an opening formed in series with a cable-receiving groove 26b for receiving the inner cable 29a.

Abstract: A windmilling brake system for a turbine engine includes a brake drum (14) on an interior surface of an engine rotor. The drum circumscribes a brake unit (37) that includes a brake ring (38) with brake shoes (42) each connected to the ring by respective springs (44). A leg (45) extends from each shoe and toward the ring. The ring is sandwiched axially between bolting flanges (28, 29) on forward and aft carrier portions (24, 25) of a two piece, variable stiffness, dual load path rotor bearing support. Nonsacrificial fasteners secure the ring to one of the flanges while frangible fasteners (52) secure the flanges to each other. The frangible fasteners also extend through an eye (47) in each leg to deflect the springs and hold the brake shoes in an armed state out of contact with the drum. Upon being exposed to abnormal imbalance loads, the frangible fasteners fail in tension to disable one of the two load paths.

Structure is provided for mounting the wheel lock assembly to the frame of the vehicle so that an axial center line of the security tube is generally vertical and the wedge-like brake member is disposed between the tandem wheels of the vehicle such that the angularly spaced surfaces engage a portion of the tread surface of each wheel when the second tubular member is in the second, extended position.

  • Patent number: 5355977
Abstract: The parking brake can be fitted to the wheelchair frame largely regardless of the nominal position of the brake element, and conversely the position of the brake element can be exactly matched to the position of the rear wheel. A two-piece clamp connects a cylindrical bearer to a part of the wheelchair frame and allows the bearer's rotation and lengthwise displacement relative to the frame. One end of the bearer holds the pivoting brake element and locking lever. One arm of the locking lever acts together with the brake element and has two recesses. When the locking lever is moved to a released position, spring action forces the brake element to engage one of the recesses and to be located beside the rear wheel approximately perpendicular to the wheel's rotational axis. When the locking lever is moved to a braking position, the brake element engages the second recess and is located more or less parallel to the rotational axis of the rear wheel.

  • Patent number: 5346039
Abstract: A wheelchair brake includes a pressing lever having a free end which pivots bout a first axis to make braking contact with a wheelchair wheel. The pressing lever is normally urged into a neutral position away from the wheel by an elastic, spring-like member, such as a rubber band or O-ring. A first brake lever for operating the brake by a companion is connected via a Bowden wire to the free end of the pressing lever, so that depression of the first brake lever causes the pressing lever to pivot into braking contact with the wheel. A manually releasable safety catch automatically engages the first braking lever when the lever is depressed, thereby locking the lever in its braking position. A second brake lever is also provided for use by the wheelchair user. The second lever pivots about a second axis causing a pressure part to bear against the same pressing lever causing a braking contact with the wheel. Further pivoting of the second lever also causes the mechanism to lock in a braking position.

Abstract: A foot actuated wheel brake for shopping carts and other wheeled equipment is disclosed. The wheel brake is designed for at least one wheel in a wheeled cart where each wheel is rotatably supported on a yoke at a lower end of a leg support in the wheeled cart. The wheel brake includes a first foot pedal that extends above and is movably mounted to the yoke. Preferably, the first foot pedal has a red colored stop sign shape. A second foot pedal extends laterally outwardly beyond the yoke and is movably mounted to the first foot pedal. Preferably, the second foot pedal has a green colored curvilinear shaped element that extends outwardly beyond the red colored stop sign shape. Operating engaging/disengaging structure is associated with the first and second foot pedals for moving the brake shoe into braking engagement with the wheel when the first foot pedal is engaged and for releasing the brake shoe from the wheel when the second foot pedal is engaged.

Abstract: A device for forming blisters in which a web material including a thermoplastic resin that is supplied to a rotary forming drum is heated and deformed by heat in accordance with the configuration of cavities provided on the rotary forming drum. A predetermined tension in the range of 5 kg/215 mm to 50 kg/215 mm is applied to the web material while feeding it. When the rotary forming drum consists of a polygonal drum, each peripheral surface of the drum is formed as a curved surface extending along an arc whose radius is larger than that of the circumscribed circle of the polygon. This invention can be used in a packing device for foods, drugs, etc.

Abstract: An escalator is provided with a caliper disc brake for stopping movement of the steps in cases of emergency. The disc is mounted on the main drive sprocket shaft, and the caliper is normally held away from the disc. When power is removed from the drive, the caliper is set on the disc to stop further movement of the steps. The braking torque of the brake assembly is adjustable to allow use of one basic assembly with escalators having different rises. The adjustment is accomplished by moving the center of gravity of the brake pads toward or away from the pivot axis of the brake lever. The brake can also be finely tuned at installation to provide an optimum stopping distance and time so that a too abrupt stop is avoided.

Abstract: In a wheel and brake device for a transportation vehicle with pivotal wheels, a particularly simple brake operation may be achieved by placing a brake activating structure at each end of the vehicle and connecting it to a brake lever. The device comprises only one pedal at opposite ends. The pedals are arranged to be activated in only one direction irrespective of whether a braking or a releasing operation is to be performed. Each pedal is connected to a swinglebar by brake levers, the swinglebar also being connected to a cam follower. The cam follower runs along a cam track defining two fixed resting positions for the cam follower. In one of the resting positions, tabs on a brake block will engage with teeth firmly connected to the wheels.

Abstract: A wheel brake for shopping carts and other wheeled equipment is disclosed. Typically, shopping carts and other wheeled equipment have a yoke depending from a lower end of a leg support, the yoke including a pair of generally parallel downwardly extending arms. A wheel is rotatably mounted on an axle extending between these downwardly extending arms. In order to provide selective braking engagement of the wheel to immobilize the shopping cart or other wheeled equipment, a brake tongue is pivotally mounted at one end to the yoke above the wheel and extends across at least a part of the wheel. A foot pedal is pivotally mounted to the yoke in spaced relationship to the brake tongue for movement between engaged and released positions relative to the wheel.
