  • Patent number: 6478489
Abstract: A rollfeed braking system for maintaining substantially constant tension in rollfeed media includes a rotary brake drum on a rollfeed mounting spindle assembly and a pivotally mounted spring biased brake arm having a braking area urged toward the brake drum. A friction ring is mounted on the exterior surface of the brake drum so that frictional braking force is applied to the drum by the friction ring rather than by brake shoes as is conventional. Substantially constant tensioning of the media results since roll replacement does not require the operator to contact the exterior surface of the brake drum which leaves contamination thereon in the form of fingerprint oil, grease or other contaminants.

  • Patent number: 6161604
Abstract: A web-up system is provided for a web-fed printing press, the web fed printing press having a plurality of components including a slitter mechanism. The web-up system includes either or both a web-up device and a ribbon winder. The web-up device is located adjacent to an output of a first component of the web-fed printing press, the first component located upstream from the slitter mechanism. The web-up device includes a splicing mechanism and a secondary web roll rotatably mounted on a shaft. The splicing mechanism receives a first web of material from the first component, receives a second web of material from the secondary web roll, splices the first web of material to the second web of material, and outputs a spliced web of material to the next downstream component of the press, e.g., the slitter mechanism. The ribbon winder is coupled to an output of the slitter mechanism. The slitter mechanism slits the web of material into at least a first and second ribbon.

  • Patent number: 5884860
Abstract: An image forming apparatus which uses rolled paper pulls the paper around a decurling roller in order to straighten the paper to allow the paper to remain flat. One or more torque limiting devices which provides a constant angular force against the unrolling of the paper is utilized to provide a force which straightens out or decurls the rolled paper which increases as the radius of the roll of paper decreases. The torque limiting device can be implemented using a spring which grips a rotating cylindrical surface as the surface rotates, a viscous-elastic fluid which provides a resistance against rotation, frictional surfaces, or magnets. The torque limiting device may also be implemented using two springs which provide different resistance against rotation in order to provide different rotational resistance, depending on the direction the roll of paper is rotating.

  • Patent number: 5709481
Abstract: A roll-feed apparatus which is removably attached to a printer/plotter that has a self-alignment feature. Media, such as paper, vellum or film is pulled through the printer/plotter. However, a back-tension is created in the roll-feed apparatus by creating a pre-determined force on the shaft to which a roll of media is mounted. By increasing the force on the shaft, frictional drag is induced impeding the shaft's rotation. It has been found that the rotational impedance, in conjunction with the pull of the printer/plotter, corrects any misalignment of the media in approximately six meters of media run.

  • Patent number: 5667164
Abstract: The axial length of a center roller (subroller) (30) is made shorter than the axial length of a main roller (28), and the center roller (30) is placed so that an axis of the center roller (30) is parallel to an axis of the main roller (28) in a base position and so that a nipping pressure is generated in the center position in the axial direction of the main roller (28). A film (sheet) (20) is thereby subjected to a tension in the center portion thereof due to the pulling force of the center roller (30), and the feeding amounts of the film (20) at the left and right portions therefore vary relative to each other. The film (20) thus displaces in the axial direction of the main roller (28) around the center roller (30).
