  • Publication number: 20030151211
Abstract: A cylinder head gasket has a multi-layered steel body that includes a unitary metallic stopper layer interposed between beaded outer layers. The interposed stopper layer has an asymmetrically formed bead defining at least one raised structure that circumferentially and closely surrounds a combustion aperture. Specifically, the bead defines a trough having a series of variations of thickness or widths about its circumferential dimension. An epoxy resin material substantially fills the volume of the trough about its circumferential extent, irrespective of the variable trough depth or width. In the disclosed embodiment, a metal/epoxy hard coating material is placed in and cured in the trough.

Abstract: In a metallic gasket having a metallic sheet made with a recess surrounding around a diverse type of hole, in which an elastic sealing member is installed, a relation between the recess and the elastic sealing member in their cross sections and also configurations is so specified as to use the elastic sealing member within a range of elastic limit inherent in the elastic sealing member, thereby improving the sealing performance of the metallic gasket. The elastic sealing member is smaller than the recess in their cross section perpendicular to the major side of the metallic sheet. Abstract: A cylinder head gasket comprises a plate, an annular groove formed to surround a combustion chamber opening formed in the plate, a metallic shim fitted into the annular groove, and a full bead located outward of the shim and projecting in the same direction as the shim. The shim is mounted on the plate by an intermittent welding. With this construction, the manufacturing cost can be reduced in comparison to the use of a conventional continuous welding or multi-layer welding. In addition, the thermal deformation of the shim and the plate itself is reduced as compared with when continuous welding or multi-layer welding is used, thus allowing the sealing capability to be improved. In addition, the cylinder head gasket is preferred for use in an engine of a higher combustion temperature than the combustion temperature when the shim is formed of a resinous material.

  • Patent number: 6499743
Abstract: A gasket is provided for use between an engine block and a cylinder head of an internal combustion engine. The engine block has a combustion chamber fitted with a liner. A liner seal is compressed between an end of the liner and the cylinder head. The pressure of combustion tends to flex the cylinder head away from the engine block at a location away from the bolts which secure the head to the block, forming a gap. The gasket has an opening adapted to register with the combustion chamber. A thickened ring portion on the gasket surrounds the opening and serves as a load limiter for the seal, takes up the gap between the head and block caused by flexing, and provides a path for unloading combustion forces to limit movement of the liner.

  • Patent number: 6450504
Abstract: The invention relates to a metallic cylinder head gasket for an internal combustion engine, having a cover plate which faces the cylinder head of the internal combustion engine in the installed state and is provided with one or more openings arranged next to one another, corresponding to the combustion chambers of the internal combustion engine. The cover plate has a bead around each opening with a space between the bead and the opening. This leaves a straight sheet metal portion in the edge region of the opening. Arranged adjacent to the bead around each opening radially inwards from the respective bead facing away from the cylinder head is a stopper for the bead, which at the same time forms an upward combustion chamber extension of the seal. In this case, the stopper decreases in its thickness radially outwards in such a way that the surface pressure in the region of the stopper is essentially homogeneous over the width of the stopper under operating conditions.

Abstract: A metal gasket 10 for use between heads and blocks of an internal combustion engine in which such gasket is composed of a beaded plate 11 and a stopper plate 12 placed one on top of the other. The metal gasket 10 has an opening 13 corresponding to the cylinder hole of the engine. The metal gasket 10 has an annular stopper 17 formed by folding back the periphery of the opening 13 the stopper plate 12. The metal gasket 10 also has a stepped part 19 along the outer periphery of the stopper 17. This stepped part 19 projects toward the side of the gasket on which the stopper 17 is formed. The metal gasket 10 also has a spacer layer 20 formed between the stopper 17 and an annular pressure receiver 18 the stopper plate 12. The metal gasket 10 also has a rubber coating layer 21 formed at least on that side of the stopper plate 12 opposite to the side on which the stopper 17 is formed.

Abstract: A metal laminate gasket of the invention is used for an internal combustion engine. The gasket is basically formed of a first and second metal plates laminated together. Each of the first and second metal plates includes a hole corresponding to a hole of the engine, an inner plain portion around the hole, an inclined portion around the inner plain portion, and an outer plain portion around the inclined portion The inclined portions of the first and second plates are oriented in the same direction. The inner plain portion of the second plate has a length to contact a part of the outer plain portion of the first plate to form a support area. Thus, it is possible to securely seal around the hole of the engine by the inclined portions of the first and second plates.

Abstract: A cylinder head gasket 1 comprises a pair of gasket baseplates 3 having a combustion chamber opening 3A formed therein, and a spacer 4 disposed around a cylinder bore 2 to surround it in an endless manner and held sandwiched between the pair of gasket baseplates 3. A full bead 3a and a half bead 3b are formed on each gasket baseplate in a region overlapped by the spacer 4, and the spacer as well as the full bead and the half bead are continuously held sandwiched between a cylinder head 5 and a cylinder block 6 along the circumference of the cylinder bore. The spacer allows the full bead and the half bead to be brought into abutment against the mating member under a high surface pressure and over a relatively extensive area of contact, whereby a good sealing performance is obtained in the presence of a gross porosity in the casting or flaw on the mating adjoined surface.
