  • Patent number: 9348160
Abstract: Display components (e.g., liquid crystal displays (LCDs)) are viewable at different viewing angles, for example, by a first user positioned directly in front of the display and by a second user positioned to one side of the display. Many displays present a consistent display across a wide range of viewing angles, but these displays may consume energy and/or compromise user privacy. Presented herein are configurations of backlights for display devices featuring an adjustable viewing angle, such that a user may select a narrower viewing angle in usage scenarios involving power consumption or privacy, and may select a wider viewing angle in usage scenarios involving plentiful power and fewer privacy concerns. Such configurations may include multiple banks of backlight lamps generating backlight at different viewing angles; an electrowetting electrode as an adjustable collimator; adjustable diffusers that may adjustably scatter light passing therethrough; and/or a combination of such adjustable elements.

Abstract: A display including an image-generating panel and at least one contrast-enhancing panel, a cross BEF collimator between a backlight and one of the panels, and a polarization-preserving diffuser (e.g., holographic diffuser) between the panels. Typically, the contrast panel is upstream of the image panel, and a reflective polarizer is positioned between the cross BEF collimator or and contrast panel, with the reflective polarizer oriented relative to an initial polarizer of the contrast panel. Polarization of light transmitted by the reflective polarizer matches that transmitted by the initial polarizer. Collimated light propagating from the cross BEF collimator toward the contrast-enhancing panel is given a polarization bias by the reflective polarizer, which reflects incorrectly polarized light back toward the cross BEF collimator.

  • Patent number: 8891042
Abstract: A high-contrast electro-optic liquid crystal camera iris provides angle independent transmission for uniform gray shades. The liquid crystal iris comprises a combination of first and second liquid crystal devices arranged in optical series and positioned between optical polarizers. The director field of the second liquid crystal device is a mirror image of the director field of the first liquid crystal device, and the first and second liquid crystal devices are placed together so that the azimuthal directions of the surface-contacting directors are in parallel alignment at the adjoining or confronting surfaces of the substrates of the first and second liquid crystal devices. The liquid crystal iris provides, therefore, less angular variation of intermediate transmittances compared with that provided by prior art liquid crystal iris.
