Patent number: 7227709Abstract: To calibrate the VGA of a read head, test signals from a DAC are input to the VGA and the output of the VGA is observed, with the gain of the VGA being adjusted as appropriate. So that the DAC need not be made with tight tolerances, a DC signal can be fed into the DAC prior to VGA calibration, and an auxiliary ADC is used to receive the output of the DAC and to determine, for a given DC input, what the signal produced by the DAC actually is. In this way, during subsequent VGA calibration the test signal from the DAC is known not by virtue of the DAC having a tight manufacturing tolerance but by virtue of the actual measurements of its outputs for given register inputs.Type: GrantFiled: January 23, 2006Date of Patent: June 5, 2007Assignees: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V., Renesas Technology CorporationInventors: Vicki Lynn Pipal, Michael William Curtis, Raymond Alan Richetta, Koji Nasu

Patent number: 7206155Abstract: A write driver circuit (38) uses a matching resistors (R0, R1) to match the impedance of the head (32) disposed between output nodes (OUTP, OUTN). Control circuitry (Q4, Q5, Q6, Q7, R2, R4, R6 and R7) maintains the voltage at reference voltage nodes (VREFP, REFN) at essentially the same voltage as its corresponding output node. The matching resistor is disposed between the reference voltage node and the output node along with a driver (40a, 40b), which may be implemented as an AB driver. Since the voltage between the reference node and the output node is generally zero, very little current is shunted by the matching resistors, and thus, there is very little power wasted by the matching resistors. In the preferred embodiment, the output transistors of the AB drivers are driven by switched current sources (Q28 and Q29) to provide enhanced current to the bases of the output transistors on an as needed basis.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2004Date of Patent: April 17, 2007Assignee: Texas Instruments IncorporatedInventors: Jeremy Kuehlwein, Raymond E. Patent number: 7193799Abstract: An apparatus and a method to remove a resonance frequency of a system in which an unnecessary resonance frequency occurs in a head stack assembly (HSA) having a head for reading/writing data. The HSA is identified and filtered to prevent mechanical damage caused by resonance. The system is artificially excited to identify a potential resonance frequency of the system. The system is designed so that the identified resonance frequency is filtered. Thus, resonance frequency components outside of Nyquist frequency bandwidth of the system can also be identified. Also, the resonance frequency can very easily be identified in a time domain without a complicated calculation process such as an additional frequency transformation process. Coefficients of a programmable filter are updated using the identified resonance frequency to prevent mechanical damage caused by resonance and improve a servo tracking performance and reliability of data.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 2002Date of Patent: March 20, 2007Assignee: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.Inventor: Da-woon Chung

Patent number: 7191083Abstract: Disclosed herein is an apparatus and method of calibrating the parameters of a Viterbi detector 138 in which each branch metric is calculated based on noise statistics that depend on the signal hypothesis corresponding to the branch. An offline algorithm for calculating the parameters of data-dependent noise predictive filters 304A-D is presented which has two phases: a noise statistics estimation or training phase, and a filter calculation phase. During the training phase, products of pairs of noise samples are accumulated in order to estimate the noise correlations. Further, the results of the training phase are used to estimate how wide (in bits) the noise correlation accumulation registers need to be. The taps [t2[k], t1[k], t0[k]] of each FIR filter are calculated based on estimates of the entries of a 3-by-3 conditional noise correlation matrix C[k] defined by Cij[k]=E(ni-3nj-3|NRZ condition k).Type: GrantFiled: July 20, 2006Date of Patent: March 13, 2007Assignee: Infineon Technologies, AGInventors: Jonathan J. Patent number: 7126778Abstract: It has been discovered by the inventors that the efficiency and data integrity of a storage device can be improved by dynamically adjusting certain operating parameters to optimal values during the operation of the storage device. In one embodiment, the physical properties of a storage device such as a hard disk drive are measured during the manufacturing process to determine the dependency of the storage device upon the environmental conditions in which the storage device is operating. The physical properties of the storage device and the effect the operating environment of the storage device has upon the storage device performance are determined, and optimal values for the write current of the storage device are stored in a lookup table. The temperature in which the storage device is operating is used as a reference into the data that resides in the lookup table. Optimal values for the precompensation delay may also be stored in the lookup table.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 2001Date of Patent: October 24, 2006Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventor: Bernd Lamberts

Patent number: 7126773Abstract: A method is presented for precompensation of Non-Linear Transition Shift (NLTS) in magnetic recording media using a perpendicular recording write head. The method includes maintaining a count of non-transition data bits (“zeroes”) preceding a data transition (“one”) to be written. A precompensation value is assigned which correlates to the count of non-transition data bits preceding the data transition to be written. The assigned precompensation value is then applied to delay timing of a write signal sent to the perpendicular recording write head so that the location of the actual written data transition more closely aligns with an ideal location of the data transition to be written.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 2005Date of Patent: October 24, 2006Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands, B.V.Inventor: Alexander Taratorin

Patent number: 7119974Abstract: A recording system of a magnetic tape drive is operated to cause one separate set of write heads to write data discontinuously to magnetic tape as received, and to save the data, and, during the same operation, to cause another separate set of write heads to rewrite data to magnetic tape in a continuous arrangement. The writing may be in parallel and simultaneous. Thus, during the same operation, and at the same time, the separate sets of the plurality of write heads, temporarily write the received data to magnetic tape so that the sender can erase its copy, and rewrite the saved data to the magnetic tape in a permanent arrangement, without waiting to complete first writing received data, to complete subsequently rewriting the data, and repeating.Type: GrantFiled: August 11, 2005Date of Patent: October 10, 2006Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventor: Glen Alan Jaquette

Patent number: 7113355Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention relate to systems, methods, and computer readable media for calibrating storage devices such as hard drives. A testing system is connected to a group of storage devices that are being prepared for release and eventual sale. Alternately, a storage device may be connected to an end-user system for which it is in use. The storage devices are tested for head instability. A lower frequency test pattern is performed, which induces a stronger magnetic field. A measurement of servo gain control is taken while reading from a disk and compared to a baseline for servo gain control. If the variance is larger than a predetermined amount, then the read/write head is determined to be unstable.Type: GrantFiled: December 3, 2004Date of Patent: September 26, 2006Assignee: Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.Inventor: Fumitoshi Hidaka
