For Electrical Power Distribution Systems And Devices Patents (Class 361/601)
  • Patent number: 8804313
Abstract: Computational enclosures may be designed to distribute power from power supplies to load units (e.g., processors, storage devices, or network routers). The architecture may affect the efficiency, cost, modularity, accessibility, and space utilization of the components within the enclosure. Presented herein are power distribution architectures involving a distribution board oriented along a first (e.g., vertical) axis within the enclosure, comprising a power interconnect configured to distribute power among a set of load boards oriented along a second (e.g., lateral) axis and respectively connecting with a set of load units oriented along a third (e.g., sagittal) axis, and a set of power supplies also oriented along the third axis. This orientation may compactly and proximately position the loads near the power supplies in the distribution system, and result in a comparatively low local current that enables the use of printed circuit boards for the distribution board and load boards.

  • Patent number: 8797720
Abstract: A circuit protection system has a normal mode, and a maintenance mode with reduced potential arc flash energy. A downstream circuit breaker is mounted within a first enclosure comprising a first access panel. A locking mechanism locks the first access panel closed. An upstream breaker is mounted within a second enclosure comprising a second access panel. A current sensor senses current and is in communication with an electronic trip unit that controls current interruptions by the upstream breaker based on a trip setting. A user interface device is accessible when second enclosure is closed, and allows user selections of normal and maintenance modes. When maintenance mode is selected, the trip unit changes the trip setting such that potential arc flash energy is reduced. The system is configured to keep the first access panel locked closed based on normal mode being selected, and allow unlocking based on maintenance mode being selected.

  • Patent number: 8549062
Abstract: A vertical-mount network remote power management outlet strip embodiment of the present invention comprises a long, thin outlet strip body with several independently controllable power outlet sockets distributed along its length. A power input cord is provided at one end, and this supplies AC-operating power to relays associated with each of the power outlet sockets. The relays are each addressably controlled by a microprocessor connected to an internal I2C-bus serial communications channel. The power-on status of each relay output to the power outlet sockets is sensed and communicated back on the internal I2C-bus. A device-networking communications processor with an embedded operating system translates messages, status, and controls between the internal I2C-bus and an Ethernet port, and other external networks.

Abstract: A network can comprise a power manager with a network agent in communication over a network with a network manager. The power manager can be connected to control several intelligent power modules each able to independently control the power on/off status of several network appliances. Power-on and load sensors within each intelligent power module can report the power status of each network appliance to the network manager with variables in response to commands. Each intelligent power module can be equipped with an output that is connected to cause an interrupt signal to the network appliance being controlled. The network manager can test which network appliance is actually responding before any cycling of the power to the corresponding appliance is tried.

  • Patent number: 8476870
Abstract: The diagnostic method applies to a standalone system including a generator, a power regulator and a power storage element. The method includes comparison of the effective charging power or current of the power storage element respectively with a predefined power or current threshold. If the effective charging power or current is lower than said threshold, the power storage element is disconnected. An abnormal behavior is then detected either by comparing the effective charging power with the smaller of the values representative of the theoretical charging power of the power storage element and of the maximum power able to be delivered by the generator and comparing the effective and theoretical charging voltages, or by comparing the effective and theoretical charging currents.
