  • Patent number: 8861338
Abstract: A method, apparatus and computer program product for performing routed split multilink trunking for IPv6 is presented. A first aggregation device is interconnected with a second aggregation device using an Inter Switch Trunk (IST). The first aggregation device learns a Media Access control (MAC) address of the second aggregation device and the second aggregation device learns a MAC address of the first aggregation device. Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) addresses are synchronized between the first aggregation device and the second aggregation device. When the first or second aggregation device receives an IPv6 packet destined to the other aggregation device, the first or second aggregation device performs an IPv6 route lookup on a destination address of the IPv6 packet and forwards the packet to a next hop for the IPv6 packet.

  • Patent number: 8861340
Abstract: Network devices provide Internet Protocol (IP) and Label Distribution Protocol (LDP) fast reroute for unicast and multicast traffic. The approach described herein for fast reroute for IP and LDP uses maximally redundant trees (MRTs). MRTs are a pair of trees where the path from any node X to the root R along the first tree and the path from the same node X to the root along the second tree share the minimum number of nodes and the minimum number of links. A network device, such as a router, computes a pair of MRTs for each destination and installs one or more MRT alternate next-hops in its forwarding plane for use in forwarding network traffic to a destination in the event a failure occurs that renders a primary next-hop unusable for reaching the destination.

Abstract: A method, a node, and a network include mesh restoration and bandwidth allocation systems and methods for shared risk connection groups for source-based routing control planes. The mesh restoration and bandwidth allocation systems and methods utilize signaling from a node closest to a point of failure to “advise” source nodes about protect paths to be taken for a particular unidirectional or bidirectional connection in the event of mesh restoration. Specifically, the systems and methods include an ability to correlate connection information as Shared Risk Connection Groups (SRCG) to optimally utilize network bandwidth in the event of failure. The systems and methods could also be used to optimally distribute connections in a mesh network as well, trying to utilize maximum bandwidth, in distributed or centralized environments. Effectively, the systems and method distributed path computation in the network away from solely being the responsibility of source nodes.

According to one embodiment of the invention, a provider edge (PE) network element in the HVPLS hub monitors for a failure of HVPLS hub connectivity failure and reuses an HVPLS spoke connectivity failure recovery mechanism in an MTU by fabricating failure of one or more spoke facing connectivity elements coupling the MTU with the PE network element causing the MTU to transition to a secondary PE network element in the HVPLS hub. In addition, the PE network element establishes a dynamic spoke pseudowire for each virtual instance affected with the MTU to restore HVPLS hub connectivity for that PE network element.

Abstract: A wireless communications device is configured to establish a radio level session with a network at a relatively high or highest protocol level among a plurality of protocol levels supported. Upon failures in establishing, or during, a network level data session, the radio level session is closed. Thereafter, the device re-attempts to establish the network level session at a lower, fallback protocol level, by pretending it is a legacy device incapable of supporting the high protocol level. In this manner, the network is likely to follow a different procedure in establishing data communications, whereby an error that caused the failure is less likely to be repeated. As examples, error conditions in eHRPD data sessions result in fallback to HRPD or 1xRTT data sessions. A network based alternative embodiment implements protocol fallback via appropriate fallback instructions to the wireless device.

Abstract: A mobile router having a session proxy module is disclosed. The session proxy module may act as a proxy (such as a TCP proxy) for all sessions (e.g., TCP sessions) going through the mobile router. That is, for example, when a local end-user seeks to establish a TCP session from their local end-user device (such as laptop) with a destination (such as a third party server), the session proxy module may (1) terminate the TCP session coming from the local end-user device and (2) establish a TCP (or some other protocol) session on the backhaul interface with the destination. That way, all end-user traffic between the end-user and the destination may be transparently routed through the mobile router.

Abstract: After statically provisioned paths are created through an Ethernet network, trunks may be created to extend along those paths. The trunks extend between pairs of NNI interfaces on either end of the path, and Ethernet OAM may be run over the trunks to detect connectivity along the paths. Service instances and service groups may be provisioned over particular paths through the network. Each service instance/service group is associated with a trunk and the Ethernet OAM service on the trunk may be used to provide Ethernet connectivity OAM for the service instance/service group. Upon detection of a failure on the trunk, the service instances/service groups associated with the trunk may be caused to failover to an alternate path through the network. Thus, a single Ethernet OAM service instance may be used to provide connectivity verification so that connectivity detection does not need to be performed on each individual service instances/service group.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides for avoiding packet loss and delay that occurs during conventional link switchover by moving link switchover logic from a downstream PORT (Protocol Independent Multicast Over Reliable Transport) routing element to an upstream PORT routing element. An upstream PORT routing element detects the failure of a forwarding interface for a multicast datastream, where the forwarding interface is coupled to a downstream PORT routing element. In response to detecting the failure, the upstream PORT routing element determines a set of candidate interfaces that are also coupled to the downstream PORT routing element. The upstream PORT routing element selects a new interface from the set of candidate interfaces and installs the new interface as a replacement forwarding interface for the multicast datastream.
