  • Patent number: 6616392
Abstract: A method and apparatus for regulating the throughput of a rotary turret heat-sealing machine, without changing the rotational speed of the rotary turret. An indexing clutch is controlled to feed cans into the rotary turret such that only a predetermined number of sealing heads are used to seal cans fed therein. The predetermined number of cans is calculated based on a desired throughput rate. Dwell times, temperatures, and pressures can remain constant while varying radically the can throughput.

  • Patent number: 6554556
Abstract: For the manufacture of a ring part out of a flat sheet-metal part to form a lid for a lid of a can. A hot-sealable coating is provided on one side of the sheet-metal part which is then shaped into a cylindrical tube with the coating being on the inside. The axially extending edges of the tube are joined together to form a butt-joint and the inside surface thereof pressed against a cooling plate. A butt-joint welding seam is then created by means of a laser jet. The tube is separated into equal length tube sections and each is conically enlarged at one end. The other end of each tube section is bent radially inwardly to form a bearing surface for a tear-off foil. By flanging the conically enlarged end, an annular flange is created to receive a body of a can.

  • Patent number: 6533517
Abstract: Sealant is applied onto or into a folded-seam closure of a metal can. Instead of introducing sealant into the U-shaped lid flange and drying, according to the invention the compound or sealant is applied to the base flange, the base of the metal can being dipped into a current of fluid sealant or at least brought into contact with it at the surface. • Patent number: 5000370
Abstract: Circular cylindrical bodies (2) are formed from rectangular sheet-metal blanks by rounding and longitudinal seam welding. These are widened oval-conically over their whole length in a first expanding operation and then relaxed again. Then the bodies (2) are widened in a second expanding operation so that they acquire their polygon-like, particularly rectangle-like, cross-sectional shape over their whole length. As a result, the bodies are stressed at their marginal regions at the ends in such a manner that these marginal regions do not become undulatory and can therefore be satisfactorily joined with a can cover or bottom.

  • Patent number: 4536243
Abstract: A method of, and apparatus for, manufacturing a metal can (1) with an annular seam (5) which is capable of withstanding high internal pressures and resisting chemical action. A piece of thermoplastic tape is heat bonded to the outer surface (10a.sub.3) of the open end portion (10a ) of a first can section (10) so as to leave a portion (11a) projecting therefrom. After being bent radially inwardly of the first can section, the projecting tape portion is further folded back into forced contact with the inner surface (10a.sub.2) of the open end portion of the first can section by means of a mandrel (16). The open end portion of the first can section is then heated, with the fold of the tape held pressed against its inner surface by the mandrel, to cause adhesion of the thermoplastic tape to the outer surface, edge (10a.sub.1), and inner surface of the open end portion of the first can section. • Patent number: 4513595
Abstract: Methods of necking-in and flanging tubular can bodies having body walls of constant thickness. A pilot die initially inserted into the tubular can body reverses its direction during the necking-in operation with respect to the motion of a ring die member that contacts the exterior surface of the tubular can body member. This concurrent reverse movement of the two forming dies eliminates wrinkles in the necked-in region and produces a container body with increased columnar strength. Repetitive use of the method produces containers with two or three necked-in portions. A method is also disclosed for relubricating the necked-in area of the tubular can body between the successive necking stations.
