Abstract: The invention relates to methods and compositions for delivering iron to an iron-deficient patient, more particularly, to methods whereby an iron complex comprising divalent or trivalent ionic iron complexed with one or more low molecular weight anions is administered to a patient by transfer from dialysate. A complex selected according to the invention is non-polymeric; soluble in an aqueous medium; chemically stable, thereby preventing the dissociation of iron ions from the anions under conditions according to the invention; and can be well absorbed into blood and the living body. Also provided are dialysate compositions including therein an iron complex selected according to the invention, and dialysate concentrates which may be diluted to yield an inventive dialysate composition.

  • Patent number: 6835398
Abstract: A method of treating patients, particularly for pain and/or symptoms of erythromelalgia, and other neurovascular or neuropathic disorders, etc. involves administering high doses of magnesium. The magnesium is introduced through several daily administrations, totaling approximately 2-12 times the RDA for magnesium. These higher levels are achieved through increasing daily dosage amounts gradually in response to patient tolerance and until beneficial results are seen. Total magnesium intake is divided over several doses per day and taken with copious amounts of water.

Abstract: A method for prevention and treatment of multiple sclerosis and other demyelinating conditions is disclosed. The method includes two subsequent phases. In each phase, a patient orally administers daily a regimen which includes a specific combination of amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. The particular regimens provide vital nutrients necessary to re-build fatty acids that may have been lost or reduced in the myelin sheathing and other locations of brain, therefore decrease one's susceptibility to multiple sclerosis and prevent reoccurrence of the disease.

Preferably, citric acid is employed to adjust the pH of the solution. Application of the extract to a wound exhibiting superoxide anions has been found to be effective in the treatment of these wounds through the reduction of the level of superoxide anions. Moreover, treatment of partial thickness excision wounds as well as contact burn wounds with the present composition has been found to improve epithelialization of these wounds. In addition to the antioxidant activity of the present invention, treatment of the wound employing the present composition produces inhibitory effects on ROS production by human PMNs and on human complement activation, and therefore, is further beneficial in chronic wound management.

Abstract: Higher concentrations of oak bark ash extract, i.e., greater than 20% by weight, are useful for the treatment of skin cancers. Lower concentrations of oak bark extract possess additional therapeutic properties not heretofore recognized. For example, preparations containing 40-80% oak bark extract are useful in the treatment of acute cancerous skin ulcers. In addition, synthetic mixtures containing potassium ions, zinc ions, calcium ions provide many of the same advantageous properties of oak bark extract. The inclusion of rubidium ions and sulfur is also advantageous for some applications.

  • Patent number: 6692775
Abstract: A gel formulation is combined with a bactericidal concentrate which is a liquid mixture of about 1000 parts by volume of ultra pure water having an electrical resistance of 16-26 megohms, total dissolved solids of less than 0.04 parts per million and a specific conductance of less than 0.10 mho with about 1.2 to 3 parts by volume of Willard Water as prepared in accordance with U.S. Pat. No. 3,893,943. The bactericidal liquid concentrate in the amount of 3.5 to 12 ml in one liter of gel formulation is applied directly to a skin surface area having a burn or other dermal lesion to protect the area from bacterial contamination.

  • Patent number: 6689393
Abstract: A solution, in particular for hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis that permits attaining a desired glucose concentration without affecting the concentrations of other components in the solution. The solution consists of at least three individual solutions that are combined and administered after heat sterilization. The first solution contains calcium ions, electrolyte salts and optionally glucose in a concentration of 0-1000 mM and is acidified to a pH of less than 4.0 with a physiologically tolerable acid. The second solution contains glucose in a concentration different from that of the first solution and the remaining components of the first solution in the same concentration. The third solution contains a buffer in the physiological range. Also provided is a method of preparing a solution according to the invention, where the desired mixing ratio of the separate solutions is automatically established by a dialysis machine or peritoneal dialysis cycler.
