  • Publication number: 20150125656
Abstract: An interlayer comprised of a high flow, low molecular weight thermoplastic resin, and at least one plasticizer is disclosed. The use of a high flow, low molecular weight thermoplastic resin, and a plasticizer creates synergy allowing the flow of the interlayer to be increased without sacrificing other characteristics typically associated with an increased flow (e.g., increased blocking, decreased mechanical strength, and decreased manufacturing capability). In this regard, the high flow, low molecular weight thermoplastic resin provides a flow improvement, resulting in a high flow interlayer. As a result, a thinner interlayer can be utilized in forming multiple layer panels because the resulting thinner interlayer has improved flow properties.

Abstract: Described herein are various methods for making textured articles, textured articles that have improved fingerprint resistance, and methods of using the textured articles. The methods generally make use of masks comprising nanostructured metal-containing features to produce textured surfaces that also comprise nanostructured features. These nanostructured features in the textured surfaces can render the surfaces hydrophobic and oleophobic, thereby beneficially providing the articles with improved fingerprint resistance relative to similar or identical articles that lack the texturing.

  • Patent number: 9023456
Abstract: A screen has a plurality of rods arranged longitudinally around a central axis. The rods have first and second edges (e.g., inner and outer edges). Each of the first edges defines a profile that varies in lateral distances from the central axis along a longitudinal length of the rod. For example, the first edges can have an undulating profile of crests and troughs. With the plurality of rods disposed around the central axis, the profile produces a varied surface on the screen when a plurality of wraps from one or more wires is disposed laterally around rods. These one or more wires attach to the first edges of the rods and form a plurality of gaps.

Abstract: A tri-barrier ceramic coating system is provided having a base thermal barrier layer, an intermediate CMAS barrier layer, and a top erosion barrier layer, and the method of applying such a coating system to a substrate. The base layer has a typical columnar structure with inter-columnar gaps and intra-columnar micro-pores that provides the stress tolerance during thermal cycles. The intermediate CMAS barrier layer has the fiber-like columns with inter-columnar nano-pores and a grid structure on the bottom of the layer. The fine structured intermediate layer covers the gaps between the columns of the base layer and will block CMAS infiltration effectively. The top erosion resistant layer contains wider TBC columns with narrow inter-columnar gaps and a modified cauliflower-like TBC head that provides erosion resistance for the underlying layers. The tri-barrier coating microstructure will further reduce the thermal conductivity as comparing to the conventional single layer system.

  • Publication number: 20150079327
Abstract: A method for fabricating custom surface reflectance and spatially-varying bi-directional reflectance distribution functions (BDRFs or svBRDFs). The 3D printing method optimizes micro-geometry to produce a normal distribution function (NDF) that can be printed on surfaces with a 3D printer. Particularly, the method involves optimizing the micro-geometry for a wide range of analytic NDFs and simulating the effective reflectance of the resulting surface. Using the results of the simulation, the appearance of an input svBRDF can be reproduced. To this end, the micro-geometry is optimized in a data-driven fashion and distributed on the surface of the printed object. The methods were demonstrated to allow 3D printing svBRDF on planar samples with current 3D printing technology even with a limited set of printing materials, and the described methods have been shown to be naturally extendable to printing svBRDF on arbitrary shapes or 3D objects.
