  • Patent number: 8703280
Abstract: Provided is a high-shielding reflective film, and its manufacturing method. This film is fabricated from an optical reflective film and a polarizer. The optical reflective film and the polarizer are combined by a means of a specific scheme. The optical reflective film is formed by stacking multiple layers of dielectric optical interference films with different materials. The optical reflective film particularly applies a principle of optical interference to reflect the most of the incident light, and allow some transmission. The polarizer is to absorb half of the incident light, and allow the other half to pass through. Since the characteristics of reflection between the reflective film and the polarizer are different, the reflectance difference therefor may increase. By which, the high-shielding reflective film achieves a one-way mirror with anti-peep effect since it substantially increases the reflectance difference among the incident lights from the various directions.

Abstract: A catheter balloon and method involves extruded tubing with multiple layers of different durometer values, selected such that the blow up ratio (BUR) at the balloon's inner surface is increased. In one method a two stage blow mold process uses a small radius initial stage where radial growth is limited, followed by a second stage to a final dimension. A single stage blow mold process is also disclosed where the materials and processing are selected to approach the elongation to failure limit of the material. The single stage approach is preferably followed by a modified post-expansion heat set treatment to promote greater axial strength, leading to a preferred failure mode in the axial rather than radial direction.

Abstract: Disclosed is a polystyrene based polymer/layered compound nanocomposite for injection blow molding or injection stretch blow molding of articles. The nanocomposite can reduce shrinkage and warpage to the preform during the reheating process compared to neat polystyrene. The incorporation of layered compounds can increase the processability of PS preforms, help improve heating efficiency, and improve bottle mechanical properties. The layered compound can be treated with chemicals or compounds having an affinity with the styrene monomer or polystyrene, thus producing a treated layered compound having an affinity with the styrene monomer or polystyrene. The monomer and the layered compound can be combined prior to polymerization. The polymer and layered compound can be combined by solution mixing in a solvent. The layered compound can also be incorporated into the mixture by compounding a polymer product with the layered compound, or the combination of any of the above three approaches.

Abstract: A photodegradable plastic is described, comprising cellulose esters and also, if appropriate, additives. A particular characterizing feature of this photodegradable plastic is that it comprises a dispersed photocatalytic carbon-modified titanium dioxide. Comparative experiments show that this photodegradable plastic exhibits a surprisingly high increase in photocatalytic degradability when compared with products in which a conventional or other modified titanium dioxide is used. This improvement is apparent in particular in use of the photodegradable plastic according to the invention when it is further processed to give moldings. The photodegradable plastic can, for example, first be further processed to give a filter tow. This can be used to produce filter rods, and these can then be used to produce filter plugs for filter-tip cigarettes.

Abstract: The present subject matter provides an adhesive article having a release agent or liner that is free of silicon-containing and fluorine-containing material, and related methods of adhering a backing material of the adhesive article to a substrate. The adhesive article utilizes an amorphous polyvinyl alcohol layer that facilitates removal of an optional release liner from an adhesive layer. Upon removal of the release liner, the amorphous polyvinyl alcohol layer remains disposed on the adhesive layer. A method of adhering the backing material to a substrate includes dissolving the amorphous polyvinyl alcohol layer and disposing the backing material to a substrate. During dissolution of the amorphous polyvinyl alcohol layer, a weak, temporary bond is formed between the substrate and the backing material. When the amorphous polyvinyl alcohol layer substantially dissolves and dries, the adhesive layer is exposed and forms a permanent bond with the substrate.

  • Patent number: 8663762
Abstract: A high-strength, lightweight inflatable structure is formed of at least one flexible fabric member that, in an inflated condition, forms a self-supporting structure. The flexible fabric member is formed from a bare fabric having an areal weight of less than 4.5 oz/yd2. The fabric is coated with air-impervious resin coating comprising a polyurethane resin having a mixture of graphene nanoplatelets and a phosphorus-based flame retardant added thereto. The thermally exfoliated graphene nanoplatelets contain residual graphene oxide. Graphene oxide, which is a polar molecule, has an affinity for the polar molecules that make up the phosphorus based flame retardant. Accordingly, in addition to its inherent flame-retardant properties, the phosphorus based flame retardant acts as a dispersant to improve the uniform dispersion of the graphene nanoplatelets within the matrix, thus reducing or eliminating the need to use additional dispersants.

  • Patent number: 8656518
Abstract: A cut resistant chemical handling glove that is flexible and lightweight comprises a cured, liquid-impervious polymeric latex shell. A tacky acrylic adhesive with low shear strength can be used. A cut resistant liner is slipped on the tacky adhesive coating and is infiltrated with a polymeric latex coating and cured to integrally attach the cut resistant liner with the cured polymeric coating. When the latex glove is worn on a hand and a cutting edge, such as a knife edge, contacts the glove, a crease is formed due to slip at the tacky adhesive-cut resistant liner interface creating a geometry that reduces cut stress intensity at the knife-edge thereby increasing the cut resistance of the glove. Processes for making and using these gloves are also described.
