  • Patent number: 9481068
Abstract: A tool grinder is disclosed which includes a variable speed DC motor having an output shaft, and a cutter wheel mounted on the output shaft and having a precision coating of prone superabrasive particles. The grinder preferably further includes a motor controller for governing a rotational speed of the motor between 100 rpm and 2000 rpm. This minimizes the surface speed of the cutter wheel and the friction heat generated by contact of the workpiece with the cutter wheel. The precision coating of prone superabrasive particles minimizes rubbing contact between the cutter wheel and the workpiece during material removal from the workpiece. The cutter wheel preferably has a first cutting surface parallel to an axis of rotation of the wheel and one or more additional cutting surfaces perpendicular to the axis of rotation, at another angle to the axis of rotation, or both.

Abstract: A method and an apparatus for machining an exterior surface of a metal alloy casing of a portable electronic device to form a combination of a flat edge surface, a curved edge surface and a flat bottom surface is disclosed. The flat edge surface is abraded by contacting a first flat section of a rotating cutting tool along a first circuit of a pre-determined continuous spiral path. The curved edge surface is abraded by contacting a convex section of the rotating cutting tool along additional circuits of the first pre-determined continuous spiral path. The pitch of vertical movement of the cutting tool is adjusted for each circuit of the continuous spiral path based on a resulting curvature of the metal alloy casing. The bottom surface is abraded by contacting a flat section of the cutting tool along a second pre-determined alternating direction linear path.

The conductive surface to be planarized is placed in the high resistance phase and adjacent a phase interface between the high resistance phase and the etching solution phase. A wiper is used to mechanically move the thin high resistance phase covering the conductive surface so that the raised regions of the non-planar conductive surface is briefly exposed to etching solution phase. The mechanical action of the wiper does not disturb the high resistivity phase filling the rescessed regions of the surface. As the raised surface locations are exposed, the etching solution phase contacts and electroetch the exposed regions of the raised regions until the surface planarized.

  • Patent number: 5944592
Abstract: A sharpener apparatus includes a base, a linear bearing assembly mounted on the base, and a support block carried by the bearing assembly for reciprocating movement along a rectilinear path relative to the base. A planar abrasive surface underlies the support block which has one or more open channels for receiving workpieces in sliding relation with the longitudinal axes of the workpiece preferably inclined to the abrasive surface. A pusher member is supported by the support block adjacent each channel for applying a constant force longitudinally of the corresponding workpiece to urge its tip against the abrasive surface. Manual or powered reciprocating movement of the support block effects an abrasive action of the workpiece tips against the abrasive surface to form a highly accurate and repeatable tip geometry, such as a chisel point, on each workpiece.
