In operation, the present flexible through-connection process includes in the call control processor of the switching system a new parameter in the existing inter-process message which is sent to the call routing processor at call setup time. The values supported for this new parameter will be pre-defined in the Mobile Switch Center and used by the call routing processor to determine when to perform through-connection/switch-connection for an outgoing call leg.

    Abstract: The invention provides for the design of a single beam communication satellite system covering a single service area, either uplink, downlink or both, by which rain fade effects are totally compensated. The rain fades, characterized by fixed margins, are not exceeded for a certain percentages of time. The service area must be large enough so that the statistical rain fades (in decibels) vary significantly over the service area. The single beam antenna must be electrically large enough and must have a beam forming network capable of multiple component beams so that a gain profile can be established for the antenna which compensates for the fixed margins established over the service area. Since no subscriber has excess fixed margin this results in a minimum power system. Other significant effects such as differences in slant range and other systemic variations over the service area also can be compensated.

    Abstract: Authentication method for authenticating a mobile node to a packet data network, in which a shared secret for both the mobile node and the packet data network is arranged by using a shared secret of the mobile node and a telecommunications network authentication centre. The packet data network obtains authentication triplets, forms a session key using them, and sends back to the mobile node challenges and a cryptographic authenticator made by using the session key. With the session key, the mobile node can check the validity of the cryptographic authenticator. If the authenticator is correct, the mobile node sends a cryptographic response formed using the session key to the packet data network for authenticating itself to the packet data network.
