  • Patent number: 6392088
Abstract: An improved process for the production of high quality unsaturated dimethylesters by reacting dicarboxylic anhydrides, typically maleic anhydride or phthalic anhydride, with methanol. The process is characterized by the fact that the esterification is performed in two steps, the step 1 consisting in a non catalytic reaction of formation of monomethylesters, and the step 2 consisting in the catalytic reaction of formation of dimethylesters from the monomethylester, the said catalytic reaction taking place in a reactor consisting of a multi-tray column where the liquid phase containing the mono and diester mixture flows downwards from each tray coming to contact with a progressively drier upflowing stream of vapors in countercurrent, which continuously removes the water formed in the reaction from the liquid phase. The process uses an alkylbenzene sulfonic acid with an alkyl radical containing from 10 to 13 carbon atoms as esterification catalyst.

  • Patent number: 6359147
Abstract: Reactions of ring systems, such as aziridines, oxetanes and oxiranes with carboxylic acids, anhydrides, imides, lactones and carbonate esters are catalyzed by C3-C60, substituted or unsubstituted, straight or branched-chained, alkyl, aryl, or aralkyl carboxylate Cr+3 salts, preferably chromium +3 octoate. The catalysts also accelerate the reaction of hydroxy compounds with anhydrides, and of thiiranes with anhydrides. The catalysts selectively enhance the conversion of ring systems to form monomers, prepolymers, copolymers, functional end-group monomers, functional end-group prepolymers, and functional end-group polymers rather than forming homopolymers. By varying the catalyst concentration, molar ratios, and reaction temperatures, the reaction time required to form the desired product can be controlled.

  • Patent number: 5922827
Abstract: A diaryl carbonate is produced by decarbonylating a diaryl oxalate, which can be prepared by transesterification of a dialkyl oxalate with a hydroxyaryl compound, in the presence of a catalyst, while removing the resultant carbon monoxide as a by-product, and then optionally refined by an evaporation and/or distillation, and then the resultant diaryl carbonate is condensation-polymerized with a polyhydroxyl compound, while recovering a resultant hydroxyaryl compound from the reaction system, to produce a polycarbonate.

  • Patent number: 5914426
Abstract: A process for the preparation of di-tert-butyl succinate of formula ##STR1## by proton-catalysed esterification of succinic acid with isobutene, which comprises reacting succinic acid or succinic acid anhydride, or mixtures thereof, with isobutene in the presence of a water-containing acid esterification catalyst, with the proviso that sulfuric acid is used in a concentration of not more than 95% by weight.By this process it is possible to prepare di-tert-butyl succinate by reacting succinic acid or succinic acid anhydride, or corresponding mixtures of succinic acid and succinic acid anhydride, with isobutene butene with reduced evolution of heat and at the same time with increased yield and improved purity of the end product.

  • Patent number: 5912372
Abstract: The present invention provides water-miscible lipid derivatives effective to inhibit the infectious activity of pathogenic microorganisms. Preferred water-miscible lipid derivatives are diacetyltartaric acid esters of monoglycerides wherein 90 percent or more of the fatty acid content is accounted for by a single fatty acid. The fatty acid component preferably contains from 8 to 24 and, more preferably, from about 10 to about 20 carbon atoms. The fatty acid can be saturated, unsaturated or hydroxylated.

  • Patent number: 5880298
Abstract: For the oligomerization of a fatty ester or fatty acid containing conjugated double bonds, the reaction uses a catalyst consisting of an activated earth, e.g., montmorillonite, at a temperature of from 100.degree.-180.degree. C., preferably from 130.degree.-160.degree. C. The process can be carried out continuously or in a batch process on a fixed bed and is particularly applicable to conjugated methyl esters obtained by conjugating and transesterifying sunflower seed oil. The oligomerized products obtained are particularly useful as lubricants or polycondensation reactants.
