  • Patent number: 5319950
Abstract: A reinforcing yarn and an abrasion resistant knitted fabric made therewith are disclosed. The reinforcing yarn is made by pairing one end of a "Z"-twist textured yarn together with one end of an "S"-twist textured yarn to yield an S/Z yarn pair. The S/Z yarn pair is then axially twisted in a first direction and stretched before being helically wrapped in the opposite direction with a duplicate S/Z yarn pair to yield a 4-end composite reinforcing yarn. This reinforcing yarn is knit in plaited relationship to the body yarn of a fabric to produce a fabric with exceptional abrasion resistance.

  • Patent number: 4928464
Abstract: Vacuum spinning of yarn produces yarns having good properties, and which may have a wide variety of different effects and constructions. A core filament yarn may be fed into operative association with a nipped sliver or roving, and then fed to a perforated rotating hollow shaft operatively connected to the vacuum. The core filament yarn may be a full stretched textured yarn, which is placed under tension and while under tension is dragged over a sharp edge of nonconductive material, and after the tension is relieved develops crimp. This causes individual fibers to be repelled, and provides for intermixing of the nipped sliver or roving fibers and the core filament yarn fibers. Alternatively the filament yarn may be acted upon by draft rollers before the entrance to, and after the exit from, the hollow rotating shaft, to apply a force that breaks up to about 20% of the fibers. The yarns produced utilizing the broken fibers has a spun-like appearance.

  • Patent number: 4896406
Abstract: A top bedsheet, bottom (fitted contour) bedsheet, or pillow case is produced by circularly knitting, in a jersey knit configuration, a sheath and core yarn into a fabric. The sheath fibers comprise short staple fibers such as cotton or comparable cellulosic fibers, and provide at least 50 percent of the yarn and preferably about 68-83 percent of the yarn. The core fibers are long staple synthetic fibers such as polyester, and are completely covered by the cotton so that the product has smoothness of hand. The fabric has a weight of approximately four ounces per square yard, and is finished so that it has a relaxed shrinkage of about five percent in both the length and width dimensions. The sheath and core yarn configuration is produced by passing a sliver of sheath fibers and a roving of core fibers through a trumpet, and then through the rear rolls, apron, and front rolls of a drafting apparatus to produce a drafted composite sliver, and then mechanically imparting a twist to the drafted composite sliver.

  • Patent number: 4668553
Abstract: A pile fabric is formed of interengaging ground yarns and cut pile tufts. The tufts are formed of wrap yarns extending upwardly from the ground yarns and forming the face of the fabric. Each of the wrap yarns comprises a body strand of untwisted staple fibers and a crimped textured binder strand which has extensible and retractable properties. In the wrap yarn, the binder strand is helically wrapped around the body strand in an axially extended and tensioned condition and is reduced in bulk compared to the condition the binder strand would assume when relaxed. When tufts formed of such wrap yarns are cut to form the face of a cut pile fabric, the binder strands retract and position themselves inwardly away from the face of the pile fabric so as to be hidden among the pile tufts and not visible. The retraction of the binder yarns and the appearance, hand and integrity of the resulting fabric can all be enhanced by various finishing processes.

  • Patent number: 4668552
Abstract: A pile fabric is formed from interengaging ground yarns and cut pile tufts formed of wrap yarns extending upwardly from the ground yarns to form the face of the fabric. Each of the wrap yarns comprises a body strand of untwisted staple fibers and a binder strand helically wrapped around the body strand. The binder strands are preferably crimped textured strands and formed of a thermoplastic polymer having heat shrinkable and fusible properties and a relatively low melting point of less than about 300.degree. F. The staple fibers and ground yarns are formed of a material unaffected at the relatively low melting point of the binder strand. When a moderated amount of heat is applied to a cut pile fabric formed from such wrap yarns, the binder yarns shrink and are retractably positioned inwardly away from the face of the pile fabric and are hidden among the pile tufts and not visible.

  • Patent number: 4662164
Abstract: A novel roving, and spun yarn produced from the roving, have a core and a sheath arrangement with substantially 100 percent of a first type of fiber in the sheath, and for a second type of fiber having distinctly different properties than the first fiber, about 75-90 percent in the core and about 25-10 percent in the sheath. Yarns having a cheaper fiber in the center (e.g. polyester) and a more expensive fiber on the outside (e.g. wool), or one having a higher strength core fiber and a more luxurious sheath fiber, can be produced. A sliver of first fibers and a distinct sliver of second fibers are fed in generally parallel paths. The slivers are continuously drafted to produce two distinct drafted slivers, and the path of at least one of the drafted slivers is changed so that the two slivers proceed in intersecting paths, and at substantially the same speed. The first fibers are continuously caused to wrap around the second fibers, with an angle of intersection between the two paths in the range of 60.degree.

  • Patent number: 4640179
Abstract: A multiple-layer braided line having a high tensile strength composite steel core in which the innermost braided fibrous sheath layer is nylon, securely bonded to the composite steel core. An outer braided fibrous sheath is polyester formed over the inner sheath. The core is selected with a tensile strength over the desired rate load-carrying ability of the line, but less than that of the overall tensile strength of the inner and outer sheaths. The line is lightweight and has a high tensile strength and improved resistance to severing, melting and burning results, suitable for use by mountaineers, firemen and rescue workers. The line substantially eliminates backlash.

Abstract: A pitched cable is sheathed over a defined length with a plastic polyamide film. The method includes the steps of slipping a plastic polyamide tube over a pitched cable and affixing this tube to the cable by hammering. An additional procedural step is also described, namely the prior reduction of the outside diameter of the pitched cable, so that with appropriate dimensions of the plastic tube, it is possible to make a plastic sheathing for the pitched cable, with the outside diameter of the plastic tube then being only trivially larger than the outside diameter of the unsheathed cable length.

Abstract: A method for reducing broken fibers on the surface of a carbon fiber bundle involves passing the yarn through a passage in a fluid jet which in turn is supplied with a rimming flow of liquid. When the fiber bundle contacts the liquid, some of the broken fibers snap off and others are twisted and unidirectionally cabled back into the fiber bundle.

Abstract: A textile fabric woven or knitted by the use of cored yarns, each of which cored yarns comprises a thread wadding, composed by a bundle of inner fibers having a high water retentivity, and a thread sheath composed of a plurality of outer fibers arranged exteriorly of the thread wadding so as to substantially completely enclose the inner fibers. The outer fibers has a high moisture permeability and a low water retentivity, and the inner fibers are substantially completely encompassed by the outer fibers in a predetermined thickness while permitted to expand upon absorption of water or moisture vapor.
