  • Patent number: 6805096
Abstract: Cylinder judgment signals are output from cam sensors at every uneven crank angle interval. The number of cylinder judgment signals output per cam sensor during a time period between a previous output and a present output of cylinder judgment signals from the other cam sensor, is counted up, to judge a specific cylinder based on the number of outputs. As a result, cylinders other than the specific cylinder are judged based on the judgment result and the cylinder judgment signals. Simultaneously, a time period from the previous cylinder judgment to the present cylinder judgment is calculated, to judge erroneous detection of cylinder judgment signal due to noise based on a ratio between a previous calculation value and a present calculation value of the time period. When the erroneous detection is judged, the cylinder judgment result based on the cylinder judgment signals is canceled.

  • Patent number: 6785635
Abstract: An apparatus is described for detecting the early signs of cycle-induced fatigue and thereby predicting failure of the rotating disk in turbo-machinery. It identifies change in shape of the entire disk in radial, tangential and axial directions. It examines these deformations as a function of rotational velocity and compares them to a data base of deformations due to cracks in the rotor. Blade-tip measurements are processed through specialized algorithms to detect such asymmetry during operation, providing a real-time, non-destructive method of prediction. The sensors can be housed within the machinery case, and are capable of operating in harsh environments while maintaining adequate stand-off distance, making the entire apparatus robust enough for conditions in high-speed turbo-machinery.

  • Publication number: 20040167725
Abstract: A noise or vibration control system improves the quality of adaptation estimates by filtering the input signals to the adaptation, selectively implementing a “dead-zone” during which adaptation does not occur and by selectively adding a dither signal to the control commands. The dead-zone is based on the magnitude of the changes in the control commands, which are responding to the changes in the sensor signals. The dead-zone can be applied to all actuators simultaneously, or can be applied to the adaptation of each actuator channel independently. To maintain identifiability, a “dither signal” is added to the control commands to “ping” the system to increase the amount of information available to the adaptive algorithm. The dither signal is preferably implemented on only one actuator channel at a time. Also, the dither amplitude for each channel is preferably set to be proportional to the current control amplitude.

Abstract: A modal analysis method and apparatus for acoustically determining vibration characteristics of a structure uses a MISO model. An acoustic excitation signal toward spatially distributed locations associated with the structure is generated while the latter is held vibrated, one location being chosen as reference. Complementary sets of input acoustic pressure-related signals are produced, one being a reference signal. Fourier analysis is performed on the input signals to provide correlated input acoustic pressure-related data in frequency domain including reference data. Induced output vibration is sensed at a reference point on the structure corresponding to the reference to produce complementary sets of output vibration signals, which are converted through Fourier analysis into sets of output vibration data in frequency domain. Structural transfer functions characterizing each set of input acoustic pressure-related data are obtained from which vibratory characteristics of the structure are derived.

Abstract: A method and system for determining fluidborne noise characteristics of a fluid power pump. The system includes the pump, a reference pipe fluidly connected to a discharge of the pump, three pressure sensors disposed within the reference pipe at predetermined spacings from each other and the pump, first and second loading valves, and a calculating and analysis assembly. The loading valves are selectively and alternatingly actuated to pressurize fluid contained in the system. The calculating and analysis assembly receives signals from the pressure sensors and signals indicative of the rotational speed of the pump. The calculating and analysis assembly uses these signals, together with the known physical characteristics of the reference pipe and the system fluid, to determine the source flow ripple and internal impedance.

Abstract: A keyboard integrated with a computer with a mechanism for determining a pressure sensitivity needed to register a desired keystroke is disclosed. A keystroke is registered for a given key if a force on the given key exceeds the determined pressure sensitivity. A user configuration profile can be utilized to specify a needed pressure sensitivity. Pressure sensitivity can also be determined dynamically. A threshold amount of pressure needed to register a keystroke can be compared to a measured amount of pressure applied during the keystroke and if the measured pressure meets the threshold pressure, the keystroke is registered. A control module, which can include an alphanumeric scale, can be utilized to set a threshold amount of pressure needed to register a keystroke. Some embodiments can also include a threshold amount of pressure set for each individual key.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for performing diagnostics in a pneumatic control loop for a control valve. Pressure and displacement sensors normally provided with a positioner are used to detect operating parameters of the control loop. A processor is programmed to receive feedback from the sensors and generate fault signals according to a logic sub-routine. The logic sub-routine may include calculating mass flow of control fluid through spool valve outlet ports and comparing other operating parameters of the control fluid to detect leaks and blockages in the control loop. Once a fault is detected, the location of the root cause of the fault may be identified by characterizing operating parameters of the control loop at the time of the fault.

  • Patent number: 6675108
Abstract: In a line protection unit for monitoring fault conditions of an electrical power line and actuating breakers to disconnect the line from a power supply bus, the supply bus is in the ring bus arrangement including a first bus and an auxiliary bus so that each power line includes first and second breakers. The three phase current in the line is monitored at both the breakers and summed in the unit to allow calculation of the fault conditions based upon the total current in the line. In the event of a fault condition, both breakers are tripped. In the event of breaker failure so that current continues to flow, this is detected in the unit and all the first breakers tripped to prevent the faulty breaker from allowing current to flow to the faulty line.

Abstract: For each component which is used at a high in-service temperature for a long period, its creep damage degree is approximated by a relational expression containing the Larson-Miller parameter. The creep damage degree is estimated by an approximation expression obtained by determining constants for each component. The creep damage degree is subjected to Weibull statistical analysis to estimate the creep damage degree probabilistically. Also, the thermal fatigue and damage degree obtained by an approximation expression is likewise subjected to Weibull statistical analysis to estimate the thermal fatigue and damage degree probabilistically. Therefore, the probabilistically estimated creep damage degree and the probabilistically estimated thermal fatigue and damage degree allows the life of each component subjected to a high in-service temperature to be assessed precisely and quickly.
