  • Patent number: 8074044
Abstract: A method for managing the allocation of memory to one or more applications. The method includes allocating a variety of fixed size memory blocks to a requesting application, each of the fixed size memory blocks being free of header information to maximize memory usage. Free, or unused blocks of data of the same fixed size are maintained in a freelist having a number of block roots corresponding to the number of differently fixed size memory blocks. Each block root stores a root pointer to an unused memory block previously allocated to the application. To conserve memory, each unused memory block will store branch pointers to other identically sized unused memory blocks, thereby forming a sequential chain of unused memory blocks with the block root. Therefore, applications requesting the same sized memory block can re-use previously allocated fixed size memory blocks.

Abstract: An approach is provided that uses a hypervisor to allocate a shared memory pool amongst a set of partitions (e.g., guest operating systems) being managed by the hypervisor. The hypervisor retrieves memory related metrics from shared data structures stored in a memory, with each of the shared data structures corresponding to a different one of the partitions. The memory related metrics correspond to a usage of the shared memory pool allocated to the corresponding partition. The hypervisor identifies a memory stress associated with each of the partitions with this identification based in part on the memory related metrics retrieved from the shared data structures. The hypervisor then reallocates the shared memory pool amongst the plurality of partitions based on the identified memory stress of the plurality of partitions.

Thereafter, a Capacity Planning Margin (CPM) will be applied to the forecast to reflect actual customer usage. The CPM adjusted forecasts will then be reviewed. Then, the SAN environment can be monitored by comparing actual vs. planned and return to adjust the forecast accordingly.

Abstract: A software tool automatically places files and folders of a software program within segments of a DVD. The segments are defined by security placeholders, and the disposition of the placeholders is initially randomly determined, consistent with predefined rules. The placeholders are included on the disc to hinder unauthorized copying. A developer generally defines the order in which the files and folders are to be laid out, and the software tool automatically places the files and folders, filling successive segments and shifting the placeholders to accommodate files that will not fit in a current segment. However, any movement of the placeholders must be done by the tool and is only permitted if the new disposition of the placeholder is in accord with the predefined rules. A user can manually modify the automated layout, and in response, the files and folders are automatically shifted to accommodate the changes introduced by the user.

Abstract: A method for creating logical volume snapshots in a data storage system, including receiving a first write command to write first data to a partition of a logical volume, generating a first partition descriptor record (PDR), and storing the first data at a first physical location associated with the first PDR. A snapshot command is then received to form a snapshot of the logical volume, after which a second write command is received to write second data to the partition. In response to the second write command, a second PDR is generated and the second data is stored at a second physical location associated with the second PDR. A pointer between the first PDR and the second PDR is generated. In response to a read command indicating a number of a desired snapshot of the logical volume, the first PDR is accessed using the pointer.

  • Patent number: 7836272
Abstract: A data storage system includes methods and apparatus that provide volumes for access by host computing devices. The volumes can have a storage size that is independently configurable from an actual amount of data storage that may or may not be associated with the volume. The volumes also have a persistent identifier. The volumes can have any amount of associated storage space allocated to the volume, including none, within the data storage system. Since the storage size and associated storage space are each independently configurable from each other, host that interface with the data storage system can perceive the volumes as being larger than they really are. A dynamic volume configuration technique is provided which allows storage space within storage devices in the data storage system to be dynamically associated and disassociated (i.e., added and removed) from the volumes on an as-needed basis, without requiring disruption of host activities with respect to the volumes.
