  • Patent number: 4838069
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed which are useful for fabricating integrally bladed rotors. In particular, the method and apparatus are used to increase the twist of the blades on the rotor from a first degree of twist to a second degree of twist under superplastic forming conditions. The apparatus is constructed and arranged such that the method can be carried out at ambient atmospheric conditions. A key feature of the invention is that the blade twisting dies are present in the blade heating zone only when the dies contact the blade. When the dies are not in contact with the blades, they are at ambient conditions where oxidation is at a minimum.

  • Patent number: 4819476
Abstract: Tooling system for a forming machine has a continuous guide passageway in which first and second tooling assemblies are contained for movement towards and away from each other. The passageway has passageway surfaces which serve as bearing and guiding surfaces for the tooling assemblies. Each of the tooling assemblies has a ram member and a tool holder mounted on the ram member. Additionally, a face plate is provided on one of the tooling assemblies at the leading end thereof and is movable relative to the leading end between a retracted position and an extended position. When in its extended position, it is spaced from the ram so that tools, such as punches have their ends in openings in the face plate. When the tooling assemblies move against strip material positioned therebetween, the punches or similar tools move from the face plate and perform operations on the strip. The face plate then serves as a stripper plate during reverse movement of the ram.

  • Patent number: 3942353
Abstract: A high energy rate counterblow forming machine having opposing independently movable coaxial rams movable within pressure chambers containing a compressible working fluid for impelling the rams toward one another at high velocity from retracted cocked positions, through working strokes, into forming impact with work parts held in a bolster located between the rams. Operatively connected to the rams are power activated ram retractor means for retracting the rams to cocked position and thereby compressing the ram working fluid. The rams are held in their cocked positions by latches which are releasable in unison to release the rams for movement in unison through their working strokes to form the work parts without unbalanced impact loads on the machine. One described forming machine is adjustable to accommodate work parts of widely varying sizes.
