  • Patent number: 4258903
Abstract: A spring-loaded valve actuator assembly having a hollow handle containing a compression spring urged against a movable piston attached to one end of a cable such that the handle remains in the valve-shut position when the handle is at rest. The other end of the cable is secured to the valve housing at an anchor adjacent to an arcuate guide and is in tension at all times to provide spring compression that normally urges the handle toward the shut position. The handle is connected to a rotatable ball valve contained in a valve housing situated in a conduit pipe fluid line, so that it can rotate the ball valve from the full closed to the full open position. As actuating force on the handle is decreased, the handle moves automatically toward its biased shut position because of the stored compression force of the spring which is constantly exerted against the piston inside the handle.

  • Patent number: 4161891
Abstract: To secure an operating handle or crank to an operating shaft while inhibiting undesired axial removal of the handle from the shaft, yet permitting controlled removal, for example for repair, a coupling element made of a yielding plastic material, for example of a polyamide resin, is slipped on the shaft, the shaft and the coupling element being formed with interengaging projections and recesses, for example a groove in the shaft and inwardly projecting shoulders on the coupling element. The coupling element itself is slit radially, so that it can be expanded and removed from the shaft by release of the interengaging projections and recesses. The operating handle is formed with recesses to receive axially projecting extensions of the coupling element which engage in the recesses to lock the handle to the coupling element and thus prevent axial removal. Rotation is transmitted between the handle and the shaft by direct engagement of splines and flutes formed on the shaft and the handle, respectively.

  • Patent number: 4069990
Abstract: Apparatus of the present invention requires a very short spin-up wheel mot arm compared to a large wheel diameter. Such a requirement demands good wheel control during low rpm and excellent stability for high rpm in order to avoid uncontrollable wheel oscillations. Uncontrollable oscillations will prevent the wheel from either completing the spin-up cycle or it will destroy the gas bearing. Apparatus of the present invention uses a combination of a gas film bearing to control the alignment of the wheel during low rpm and a point contact configuration that uses the gyroscopic law of angular momentum to achieve wheel stability for the high rpm. The gyro law states that the angular momentum vector will precess into the torque vector. The spin-up control mechanism can be used to control and maintain stability of any wheel that has a large OD to small spin-up moment arm ratio requirement.

  • Patent number: 4000660
Abstract: A fluidic/pneumatic, two-axis, free-rotor gyro in which the free-inertia or is gas bearing supported on a spherical portion of a rotatable gas bearing rotor, both rotors being connectable to controllable sources of drive fluid pressure for separate drive and pneumatic pickoff and torquer units, the pickoff units providing control signals representative of the frequency of each rotor. The invention includes a further aspect of comparator control circuits responsive to said control signals for selecting and maintaining the speed of each of the two rotors independently and in a ratio selected to provide G.sup.2 drift compensation. A further aspect of the invention comprises the compensation of case-erection drift by auto-erection drift by specific scaling of the gas-bearing and windage air gap parameters.

  • Patent number: 3933096
Abstract: A gyroscopic rate switch is held in an open position by a torsionally resined gimbal in a pressurized compartmentalized housing. Run-up of the rotor, uncaging of the gimbal, and actuation of electrical switches is accomplished by controlled release of pressurized gas from the housing through operatively positioned orifices in the gimbal to an exhaust port. A temperature compensated by-pass valve in the housing makes the rate switch operation insensitive to and independent of environmental changes in temperatures by providing an alternate gas escape route for the gas available for rotor spin-up.The rate switch is functionally operated by the precession of the uncaged gimbal upon spin-up of the rotor and spin of the missile.
