Abstract: A fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine includes an air flow responsive baffle plate in the induction tube which is subject to an adjustable elastic restoring force. The pivotal shaft of the baffle plate rotates inside of a bushing which is itself adjustable rotatable within the induction tube. A control slot in the bushing is covered to varying extent by a control edge on the pivotal shaft so that fuel which enters a groove in the shaft is metered according to the relative rotation of shaft and bushing. The metered fuel is conducted through a conduit in the baffle plate and is expelled through a nozzle or a valve into the induction tube.
Abstract: An air cleaning apparatus for purifying the air in machine rooms, etc., has a filter box and a primary air conveyor therein. When dust and impurities have accumulated on the upstream side of the filter, the normal clean air outlet is closed and the clean air stream is re-directed back onto the filter, thereby tending to dislodge the mat of impurities adhering to the other side. At the same time, a second air conveyor is activated to aspirate air at least partly from the interior of the filter box, thereby carrying along the dislodged mat of impurities for disposal downstream of the second air conveyor.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for detecting cylinder malfunction by monitoring the actual rotational speed in an internal combustion engine, e.g. with an inductive transducer. This signal is compared in phase with pulses from a voltage controlled oscillator, the control voltage of which comes from an integrating circuit driven by the phase comparison signal in the manner of a phase-locked loop. The VCO pulses are used to clock a shift register and the actual pulses provide the data input for the shift register. Thus, the relative arrival time of the two pulse trains determines the contents of the shift register. Decoding circuitry is used to interrogate the shift register and to actuate an output device when the contents of the register indicate an unsymmetric periodicity, caused by cylinder malfunction.

Abstract: A fuel metering system of an internal combustion engine is controlled by an analog computer circuit which delivers injection pulses to actuate the fuel injection valves of the engine. The duration of these pulses is directly related to the amount of injected fuel and depends partly on the inherent electrical characteristics of the components of the analog computer circuit. The pulse duration also depends on the instantaneous values of at least two engine parameters, r.p.m. and throttle valve position, i.e., the degree of opening of the air inlet valve. The r.p.m. signal is sensed by an appropriate transducer and triggers a monostable multivibrator in the analog computer circuit while the throttle valve position is sensed by a potentiometer and defines the charging rate of a capacitor. The voltage on the capacitor influences the action of the monostable multivibrator which delivers the fuel injection pulse.

Abstract: An apparatus for reproducing and/or recording magnetic tape in cassettes, of the type particularly adapted to be mounted on an automobile, comprises a cassette receptacle and a mechanism-carrier plate, onto which are mounted the tape reel driving shaft and the drive capstan, which carrier plate is hingedly connected to the cassette receptacle so as to be movable in a parallel manner towards and away from the receptacle. The moving away or uncoupling of the mechanism-carrier plate from the cassette receptacle is caused by the inward movement of a control slide, which is operatively associated with the carrier plate and with a carrier element carrying the magnetic head and the tape pinch roller, the carrier element being also movable towards and away from the side of the cassette receptacle.
Abstract: Apparatus for monitoring the temperature, and the electrical conductance and capacitance, of a liquid product during processing of the liquid product, and automatically converting the measured electrical conductance and capacitance values to the conductance capacitance of the liquid product at a selected reference temperature of the product. An a.c. sine wave voltage is applied across a conductivity cell immersed in the liquid and an admittance signal proportional to the current flowing through the cell is resolved into a signal proportional to the conductance of the liquid, and a signal proportional to the capacitance of the liquid, within the cell.
Abstract: The drive shaft of a fuel injection pump is coupled to a power imparting shaft via a centrifugal coupling in which pivoting flyweights determine the relative angular position of the driven and driving shafts. A return spring opposes the outward motion of the flyweights and it is supported on a movable support which can be displaced by hydraulic pressure. The magnitude of the hydraulic pressure determines the relative angular position of the two shafts at any time. A sleeve engages the driving shaft by means of a tongue and groove coupling which is helical so that the imparted torque causes an axial displacement of the sleeve, resulting in a change in the overflow cross section for the hydraulic fluid, thereby altering the effective pressure on the spring support. This changes the relative angle of the two shafts which, in turn, alters the onset of fuel injection.
Abstract: A fuel injection system for continuous injection to an internal combustion engine has a pivoting air sensor plate with a correction lever that engages a fuel control plunger for metering out fuel in proportion to the air flow. The system also includes a bimetallic, temperature-dependent strip which exerts an opening force on the correction lever when the engine is cold. An electric heater is energized by the starter switch and begins to reduce the force due to the bimetallic strip even before the engine has actually warmed up. A second electric heater of reduced power maintains the strip in disengagement during normal engine operation.

Abstract: The fuel mixture ratio of an internal combustion engine is adjusted by metering out a fuel quantity in relation to the air flow rate through the induction tube. The air flow rate is measured indirectly by monitoring the engine speed (rpm) with an electrical transducer driving a frequency-voltage converter, thus providing a first voltage, while a throttle plate position transducer generates a second voltage. The two voltages are applied to a logical circuit including parallel diodes which selects the lower of the applied signals and presents the resultant voltage as the primary control signal for fuel metering. Various compensating networks may be added to provide additional smoothing and adaptation to the operating characteristics of a particular engine and state of operation. Various fuel metering devices to be used in conjunction with the control circuit are also described.

Abstract: A centrifugal force speed governor for fuel injected internal combustion engines having at least a negative adjustment capability. In such a centrifugal force speed governor the following structural components are included: speed responsive structure; at least one adaptation spring; an adjustment member; an intermediate lever; a yield support; a control element; a stop; an energy storing structure; and a setting lever having a pin mounted thereto. The adjustment member is coupled to the speed responsive structure, the adaptation spring, the control element and through the control element to the yield support, while the setting lever engages, with its pin, the intermediate lever, the control element and the energy storing structure. When the adjustment member is displaced by the speed responsive structure and under the regulation of the adaptation spring, a displacement of the intermediate lever via the control element and the setting lever pin occurs.

Abstract: An improved throttle valve for use in the suction tube of a mixture compressing, externally ignited internal combustion engine in which the transversely extending shaft of the throttle valve is provided with an elongated aperture, the opening of which is arbitrarily variable by means of a movable valve component associated with a by-pass valve.A reciprocal type valve as well as a rotary type valve are disclosed for controlling the aforesaid aperture with each said last-named valves being associated with electrical heater elements.
Abstract: An electric motor vehicle drive system including a differential electric motor unit for the vehicle including a stator motor element mounted within a supporting frame and a rotor motor element rotatably mounted within the stator. The stator is connected to a first output shaft while the rotor output shaft is connected to a final output shaft through a one-to-one reverse mechanism which corrects or reverses the direction of the final output shaft. Thus, both shafts rotate in the same direction but at one-half relative armature and field structure r.p.m.'s with true differential action within the motor unit itself. The driving connection between the electric motor unit and the motor vehicle in this embodiment comprises a pulley belt combination connected to the vehicle drive wheels and the two output shafts of the motor unit with radius rods for maintaining the adjustable tension on the belt drive. So connected, there is compensation for unequal traction, turning of the vehicle, unequal wheel sizes, etc.
Abstract: A portion of the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine is returned to the induction manifold through an exhaust gas recycling line. This recycle line contains one or more orifice plates to create a measurable pressure drop when gas is flowing. The gas flow through the recycle line may be interrupted in controlled manner by a valve, particularly a magnetically actuated valve. The pressure drop across the orifice plate or plates is sensed by pressure-responsive electrical switches which provide input signals for a logical circuit that energizes a signaling device to warn the operator of a malfunction in the exhaust gas recycling system.
