    Abstract: A capacitive proximity sensor for use in hostile environments comprises a ceramic substrate, and two conductive regions formed on the substrate and having opposed edges defining a narrow gap therebetween. The gap configuration is such as to maximize the fringing of electric flux lines outwards from the substrate when one conductive region is energized from a high frequency source. The other conductive region is connected to remotely located signal conditioner operative to maintain said other region at virtual ground and thereby eliminate signal error due to cabling capacitances. On approach of a flux-shielding body to the sensor, the sensor output current to the signal conditioner will decrease as a function of the proximity of the body. The sensor can be used as a simple proximity sensor or incorporated in a shaft torque measurement system operative down to zero r.p.m.

    Abstract: A spark plug ignited internal combustion engine in which each cylinder is provided with a turbulence chamber in which the exhaust valve is located. The cylinder head and the top of the piston cooperate during the compression stroke to define a guide channel through which combustible gases are introduced in off center manner to the turbulence chamber where a substantially single vortex flow is created. The spark plug is preferably located so that the sparking electrodes are in the turbulence chamber or nearby in the guide channel and are in close proximity to the top of the piston at TDC. In one embodiment, the inlet valve is located in a depression of the cylinder head so configured that, during the initial valve opening, the inflowing gases are constrained to flow toward the center of the combustion chamber, thereby preventing contact with the cylinder walls.

    Abstract: The combination of a fuel supply system for an internal combustion engine, an exhaust gas oxygen concentration sensor and a feedback control system including an integration circuit connected to the fuel supply system and a correction control circuit connected to the exhaust gas oxygen concentration sensor and the integration circuit. The combination controls the air-fuel mixture to be supplied to an engine in accordance with an integration output signal, which in turn is generated from the output signal generated by the exhaust gas oxygen concentration sensor. The correction control circuit serves to disconnect the exhaust gas oxygen concentration sensor from the integration circuit when a predetermined operating condition of the engine is reached, thereby holding the output from the integration circuit constant.

Pivoting on the same shaft as the throttle plate is a mixture generating plate having a damping wing which moves in the same direction as the throttle plate in an appropriately configured wall region of the induction tube and a mixture generator wing with internal fuel channels and one or more fuel injection orifices at the edge where it defines the air flow cross section. The mixture generating plate is displaced by the air stream and this displacement is opposed by a spring. At full throttle, the force of the spring is changed by interaction of the throttle plate with the point of attachment of the spring.
