Abstract: A process for preparing urea by the intermediate formation of ammonium carbamate is disclosed, wherein the process involves reduced use of high pressure steam, and the reduced production, as a by-product, of low pressure steam, compared to prior art processes. Ammonium carbamate is formed from ammonia and carbon dioxide in a first reaction zone at a pressure of 90 - 140 atmospheres. Thereafter, the ammonium carbamate is partly converted into urea in a second reaction zone at about the same pressure as the first reaction zone until at least 40% of the equilibrium amount of the urea has formed, and then ammonium carbamate present in the solution from the second reaction zone is converted into additional urea in the third reaction zone at a pressure of at least 160 atmospheres until at least 85% of the equilibrium amount of urea has been formed.
Abstract: A method for making cylindrical welded wire screens by continuously bending a wire into a helical wrap with juxtaposed equal wraps having their diameter substantially equal to the desired finished diameter of the screen whereby the radius of curvature applied to the wire is smaller than the radius of the wrap and the bending area is inside the outer circumference, supporting the wraps and progressively guiding them and bringing them into contact with supporting wires substantially parallel to the generatrix of the cylinder, and welding the wraps to the supporting wires at their contact points.
Abstract: This invention relates to containers for the bulk storage or transport of liquefied gases, for example, in ocean going marine tankers comprising a tank surrounded and supported at least from below by thermal insulation built up from panels sealed together and supported by an outer rigid shell. In such containers there is a problem of mounting the panels on said rigid shell so that they are rigidly fixed and aligned with each other.

Abstract: A machine for manufacturing triaxial fabrics, primarily of the type disclosed and claimed in Reissue Pat. No. 28155, comprises a vertically oriented warp yarn supply means based upon a horizontally disposed rotating creel, on which is preferably mounted a plurality of beams each supplying a plurality of warp yarn ends. Guide holders travelling on a cam-shaped track compensate for warp yarn path length changes so as to maintain path lengths from creel to weaving means relatively constant independent of angular position of an individual warp yarn in the course of the weaving process. Preferably, a multiplicity of such guides are combined on a single trolley carrier several of which are mounted at spaced intervals on the cam-shaped track, the movement of which is co-ordinated with the rotational movement of the warp yarn supply creel.

Abstract: A process and apparatus for making relatively thin amorphous film in which a molten film, which is extruded from a slot orifice, is drawn over a cooled control roller spaced from the orifice at its point of contact with said film at a distance not more than about 20 mm before it is received on a quenching drum maintained at conventional quenching temperature below the solidification range of the molten film, the speed of rotation of the quenching drum is in excess of the rate of extrusion of the molten film, the diameter of the control roller is less than one-quarter of the diameter of the quenching drum, and the temperature of the film control roller is maintained at least about ambient room temperature but less than the quenching drum temperature to thereby provide a skin at the directly proximate stratum of film contacting the control roller surface.
Abstract: A sugar cane harvester has cane cutting apparatus for chopping cane sticks into billets. The apparatus comprises a pair of rotatable cutting elements carrying projecting axially extending blades which co-operate as the cutting elements rotate in timed relationship. The blades each have a bevelled cutting edge and are mounted so as to come into back-to-back relationship i.e. with the bevelled surfaces facing outwards, when the blades overlap. This minimizes servicing requirements and improves the quality of the cut.
Abstract: Photo-sensitive film-forming soluble polymeric materials containing one or two polymers which can be insolubilized photochemically are disclosed. These polymeric materials contain in the same or different polymers (A) components which are reactive with moieties obtained by the photochemical decomposition of azidosulphonyl groups, e.g., a hydroxyl radical, pyridine, a phenyl radical, or a lactam radical; and (B) azidosulphonyl groups. The photo-sensitive material is insolubilized by exposure to actinic light. The material is useful in the production of photographic resists, printing plates for lithography, and the like.

Abstract: A woven fabric for reinforcing a resilient material, such as a tire casing, wherein the warp of the fabric consists of substantially unstranded wires held together in spaced groups by the weft of the fabric with at least some of the wires being formed with a set so as to have undulations along their length to thereby improve the adhesion between the wires and resilient material as well as to improve the tensile and compression stress characteristics of the wires. The amplitude of the undulations may be perpendicular to the direction in which the groups are spaced from each other. The undulations may also be periodic with the phase of such undulations being either the same or different between adjacent groups.
Abstract: A submersible pile driving apparatus includes a drop hammer 7 reciprocably mounted in a guideframe on vertical posts 8. Either the drop hammer or the guideframe is guided on cables 4 secured to a crossbar 5 attached to the pile 6, and the guideframe is suspended from the surface ship by a rigid column of tube sections 10 or the like to which the guideframe has been rigidly connected. The apparatus is provided with a guide sleeve 12 or 13 having a funnel-shaped mouth to center the pile during descent. The overall arrangement maintains even very long piles in a vertical position during driving, and prevents tilting or tipping at the pile head - drop hammer interface.
Abstract: Quick attach front end loader for an agricultural tractor. Loader has a pair of laterally spaced longitudinal rod members at each side. Tractor has sockets and guides to receive the rod members. The loader becomes supported on the tractor merely by driving tractor forwards until the rod members are received in the sockets. The lateral spacing of the sockets gives structural rigidity while minimizing obstruction of view from tractor cab when the loader is detached.
Abstract: A double select needle tufting machine or the like utilizing a driving and selecting means comprising band-like members attached to each of said needles with each band-like member being selectively engageable with an oscillatory shaft by which each of the needles is driven when selected. Two-color carpets or bedspreads are produced by threading one series of needles with one color yarn and the other series of needles with a second color of yarn.

Abstract: Underwater pile driving is implemented by a pile-driving apparatus 14 releasably coupled to a guide sleeve 5 secured to the top of a pile 10. The assembly may be performed on the surface vessel 1 through an opening 4 in a laterally extending platform 2 with the aid of a crane 13, or underwater. The components are lowered on guide cables 8, 9, and after the driving operation is completed, the coupled apparatus 14 and sleeve 5 are raised together. The striking plate 22 for the pile-driving hammer is carried by the apparatus 14.
Abstract: Carboxylated polyethylenimines are prepared by dissolving in an inert solvent a compound of formula: ##STR1## wherein: R represents an alkyl or an aryl group,Each of R', R", and R'" represents hydrogen or methyl, andR.sup.iv represents an alkyl group. The solution is then treated between -30.degree. and 25.degree. C with a polymerization initiator. After hydrolysis the polymer yields a polyamino acid which is an amphoteric product. They may be added as plasticizers to gelatin in photographic layers.

Abstract: A prefabricated swimming pool includes a liner and a wall supported by vertical posts. Lip members are arranged between the posts along the top edge of the wall and connected to the posts by brackets. The angles at which the lip members are attached to the posts are adjustable so that the number of posts used to support the wall can be varied, and pools of differing sizes can be constructed using standard components.
