Abstract: Complexes of the formula ##STR1## or a water-soluble salt thereof each cation of which is independently a non-chromophoric cation, wherein X is chloro or hydroxy,m is 1 or 2, andn is 0 or 1, with the proviso that m + n is 2, with the proviso that one of the asterisked bonds is in the 1-position and the other asterisked bond is in the 2-position, and mixtures thereof, are useful for dyeing or printing hydroxy group- or nitrogen-containing organic substrates, preferably textile material consisting of or containing cellulose fibers, most preferably cotton, alone or blended with other suitable textile fibers. The resulting dyed or printed textile material may be aftertreated with a polymeric polybasic amino compound in order to improve the wet fastness of these dyeings and printings.

Abstract: A cationic polymer composition suitable for use as a flocculating agent and as a retention aid and dewatering agent in paper making consists of a mixture of(a) a hydrophilic cationic polymer of(a.sub.1) acrylamide and/or methacrylamide and(a.sub.2) dialkylamino-C.sub.2-3 alkylene-(meth)acrylamidethe molar quantity of cationic monomer units (a.sub.2) being from 0.2 to 9 mol % of the total(b) an anionic surfactant(c) a water-immiscible oil in which the polymer (a) is insoluble, andoptionally (d) a lipophilic non-ionic surfactant,optionally (e) waterand optionally (f) an oil-miscible polar solvent.The compositions may be prepared by water-in-oil emulsion copolymerization and are readily diluted with water.

Abstract: 7-Substituted lower alkyl hept-6-enoates and 4-hydroxytetrahydropyran-2-ones bearing 6-olefinic substituents (e.g.,) ethyl erythro-3,5-dihydroxy-7-phenyl-hept-6-enoates are prepared by a multi-step process. The process involves 3-protected-lower alkyl 3,5-dihydroxy-hept-6-enoates, which are obtained by cleaving corresponding 6.alpha.-vinyl-4.beta.-protected hydroxy-tetrahydro 2H-pyran-2-ones. The final products are useful as anti hypercholesteremic agents.
