Abstract: Provided is a method of manufacturing fiber with aligned porous structure, an apparatus, and applications of the fiber. The apparatus comprises: a fiber extrusion unit, a freezing unit, and a collection unit for collecting the frozen fibers, wherein fibers extruded from the fiber extrusion unit pass through the freezing unit. Continuous and large scale preparation of such fiber with aligned porous structure is achieved by combining directional freezing and solution spinning.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining the sealability of an oil & gas well sealant fluid, whereby a cylindrical cell assembly capable of withstanding high temperature and high pressure with an electromagnetic heater positioned radially outside the cell body while partly filled with the sealant fluid. A leakage assembly in connection to the cylindrical cell assembly allows the sealant fluid to continuously flow through a leakage element at a desired differential pressure, and the residual fluid is drained into said cell by a cycling pipeline system. The real-time pressure may be recorded and transmitted to a control system including data acquisition and control units so as to monitor and measure the sealability of fluid in the downhole leakage.

Abstract: Methods of vulcanization using a high content sulfur polymer, instead of elemental sulfur, have been developed. These high sulfur content polymers are referred to as Chalcogenide Hybrid Inorganic/Organic Polymers (CHIP) materials and have good polymer compatibility in that they are soluble in a number of polymers. Furthermore, CHIP materials may have weaker bonds than the S—S bonds of elemental sulfur and thus provide for a higher crosslinking efficiency vulcanization.

Abstract: A system for computational localization of fibrillation sources is provided. In some implementations, the system performs operations comprising generating a representation of electrical activation of a patient's heart and comparing, based on correlation, the generated representation against one or more stored representations of hearts to identify at least one matched representation of a heart. The operations can further comprise generating, based on the at least one matched representation, a computational model for the patient's heart, wherein the computational model includes an illustration of one or more fibrillation sources in the patient's heart. Additionally, the operations can comprise displaying, via a user interface, at least a portion of the computational model. Related systems, methods, and articles of manufacture are also described.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides resonator networks adapted to a variety of applications. The networks include fluorophores, quantum dots, dyes, plasmonic nanorods, or other optical resonators maintained in position relative to each other by a backbone (e.g., a backbone composed of DNA). The networks may exhibit optical absorption and re-emission according to specified temporal decay profiles, e.g., to provide temporally-multiplexed labels for imaging or flow cytometry. The networks can include resonators that exhibit a dark state, such that the behavior of the network can be modified by inducing the dark state in one or more resonators. Such networks could be configured as logic gates or other logical elements, e.g., to provide multiplexed detection of analytes by a single network, to permit the temporal decay profile of the network to be adjusted (e.g., to use the networks as a controllable random number generator), or to provide other benefits.

Abstract: A gallium nitride (GaN) based light emitting diode (LED), wherein light is extracted through a nitrogen face (N-face) of the LED and a surface of the N-face is roughened into one or more hexagonal shaped cones. The roughened surface reduces light reflections occurring repeatedly inside the LED, and thus extracts more light out of the LED. The surface of the N-face is roughened by an anisotropic etching, which may comprise a dry etching or a photo-enhanced chemical (PEC) etching.

Abstract: Described herein is a magnetic dendrometer having a frame, a spring-tension mechanism, and a magnet for moving together with the spring-tension mechanism. A magnetic sensor is attached to the frame. The magnetic sensor senses the linear motion of the magnet. This linear motion translates to trackable fluctuations in magnetic field. The magnetic fluctuations are converted to electrical signals by the magnetic sensor. A spring is attached to a free-floating wishbone-style component. The free-floating wishbone-style component is coupled to a slider which has an adjustable, single-contact point with a target (e.g., a vine, a branch, etc.). The frame is a stationary frame that carries the magnetic sensor. The frame connected via the spring to the wishbone/slider combination cooperates with each other for providing linear motion to extend or contract the spring in length directions. The length variations of the dendrometer spring are converted to linear motion of the magnet and then into electronic signals.
