Abstract: Methods and apparatus for obtaining a vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) image using a discrete frequency infrared (DFIR) microscope are disclosed. The method includes generating a pulsed laser beam comprising a spectral frequency, which may be tunable; modulating the laser beam to generate circularly polarized light; illuminating a sample and collecting, and detecting an optical signal transmitted or transflected from the location of the sample. The detected signal is demodulated at, for example, both the pulse frequency and the sum or difference of the pulse frequency and the modulating frequency to obtain an intensity value that correspond to the absorbance, and a polarization-dependent value that corresponds to the VCD. Other configurations of the apparatus may be employed to measure VCB and VLD.

Abstract: Systems and methods of performing temperature swing solvent extraction (TSSE) descaling of produced water and desalination of high-salinity brines, e.g., those having a total dissolved solids (TDS) greater than about 250,000 ppm are capable of producing descaled water products including less than about 5% weight percent TDS. The brine/produced water feedstreams and combined with a solvent having temperature-dependent water solubility at a temperature TL. Water is extracted from the feedstream into the solvent to form a water-in-solvent extract component and a raffinate component, from which a solid phase can be precipitated as more water is portioned in the solvent and basicity increases. Heating of the water-in-solvent extract component reduces the solubility of the water therein, producing a biphasic mixture of dewatered solvent and descaled water that can be separated.

Abstract: Systems, surrogates, indicators and methods for rapid assessment of sanitation processes are provided. Non-living and non-toxic surrogates applied to a platform or encapsulated in a biological material mounted to a platform are exposed to a sanitation process to be evaluated. Responses to sanitation are measured and quantified using FTIR and chemometrics including principal component analysis (PCA), partial least squares regression (PLSR), loading plots and predictive models. An artificial leaf platform with one or more types of surrogates on one surface and an anchor such as an adhesive film on a second surface is described. Surrogate types include nucleic acid, phage, yeast and algae surrogates. Surrogates may also be attached directly or through a polymer to the platform surface. Surrogates may also be encapsulated or attached to the outside of a biological carrier such as a yeast cell that is free or coupled to the platform.

A bubble distributor is contained in the humidifier chamber; and a humidifier bath of the feed liquid is also contained in the humidifier chamber above the bubble distributor. The feed liquid forms a continuous and majority phase of the humidifier bath and fills a majority of the humidifier chamber, which has a width at least twice as great as its height. A lower gas region is located below the bubble distributor and the humidifier bath in the humidifier chamber and is configured to receive a carrier gas from a carrier-gas source and to disperse the carrier gas through the bubble distributor. The carrier gas in the lower gas region has a pressure greater than the hydrostatic pressure of the humidifier bath.
